We hired Dordan (Dan) and work began on July 25, 2012 and ended on August 8, 2012. Throughout the project there were some communication issues and Dan had difficulty taking direction from us. For instance, we had an issue with the window well installation where Dordan was filling in with gravel prior to attaching the well drains. They were not following the instructions that were printed on the well or the permit drawings. This did not go over well with Dan. Work was halted while I consulted with the Building Inspector who advised having the drain installed as the plans called. To fix this Dordan had to hand dig out the gravel around the windows to place in the drains. This added time to the job, as much as another day.
Dordan did not display care around our home. Several things were damaged: a roof heater was cut, a cable line was cut, our lamp post was run over, my 3' white dogwood tree was run over, and our propane line was crimped. My dogwood and lamppost were some 20 feet away from the foundation wall. Further we now have a drain from our garage that needs repaired because they refused to reconnect it. Our floor drains also do not drain properly. As we have mentioned these issues to Dordan we receive a typical reply to some variation of it's not their fault .
Besides the additional damage to our home. We also do not have a dry basement. The egress windows leak and were not installed properly. Dordan's response was to re-caulk the exterior of the window while not only blaming the manufacturer for the problem but also my 4 year old son for bothering them. Even after re-caulking the windows they still leak. I decided to contact the manufacturer to obtain a copy of the installation instructions. The directions call for use of expanding foam - not screws as were used by Dordan. It is no wonder the windows leak.
Furthermore, we do still have leaks in the basement. The first few time I called Dordan out to inspect the leaks I was told to wait longer for it to dry up. Starting on September 22, 2012, approximately 6 weeks after our basement was waterproofed. Initially, Dan had told us that it would take our basement 2-3 weeks to dry. On, November 5, we had a puddle of water on the floor that extended out approximately 2-3 feet from the wall. I attempted to contact Dordan on October 30, 2012 and requested that they come out to look at the windows as they were leaking again. They did not call me back that time. However, I was able to get them out on 1/31/2013 to look at the puddle on the floor. To which they replied that of course this was our fault and not due to a defect in their product. They are blaming my gutters and the garage drain, to which they disconnected.
Even on the day work ended, Dordan left our home in such a wreck that I phoned Dan immediately. It is no surprise that they removed the advertising sign on the day they left. My plants that were dug up were left to die, my topsoil that was to be saved was lost, overall my yard is still a complete wreck. They took all of the metal s*** and construction debris that was dug up from around our foundation and spread it around all over our lawn while mixing it with the top soil that was set aside for our flower beds. This debris & s*** material has no place being on my lawn - it is unsafe and unsightly! My lawn is now anywhere from an inch to over 2 feet above the foundation! Dordan's response 2 weeks after the job ended was that they could clean it up for $4200. Never once did Dan mention that my lawn would be trashed and that I would need to have my lawn restored, and he especially failed to mention he would leave construction debris all over my lawn. As it is today, my lawn is growing crab grass and weeds, that I can't use a lawnmower to safely cut. My front and side lawns must be cut with a weed eater.
After my last encounter with them on 1/31/13 they threatened me with a lawyer. In so many words they told me that I was wasting their time and a nuisance to them. They feel that they have done what they were hired to do and will do no more. So I have windows installed incorrectly and a leaking basement, nearly the same as it was before. I was really hoping for an amicable solution, like a dry basement. Unfortunately, Dordan (Dan & Doris) would instead like to play the blame game. They blame my husband, my disabled son, my garage drain being disconnected, the knowledge to which they presumed we had about construction, and more; all the while claiming their quality product and service isn't failing. It is quite amazing the list of excuses they have been able to devise. They have already threatened me with filing suit for defamation of character and slander for my speaking up already. This is the worst experience with a contractor I have ever had.
Here's a video of the windows: (My appologies, but I wasn't feeling very well when I made this video.)
"We were hired to waterproof the basement walls of this house. As we explained to Member numerous times, there are many sources where the water can come from. We were hired to seal the basement walls. The condition of the rest of the house with broken, overflowing gutters and broken disconnected down spouts, along with other basic maintenance issues, we were not hired to address. The nature of the water in the basement is not indicative of water coming through the wall, rather coming from above. We tried numerous times to get Member to address these issues and she refused to hire us to do the repairs, or do them herself. It is impossible to troubleshoot where the water comes from with her refusal to cooperate. Now we are banned from the property, therefore are unable to help her address this issue. Anyone wishing to discuss this project in detail please feel free to contact our office. Any contractor biding on work for Member is strongly advised to contact our office. We have countless happy customers who would gladly give recommendations to our waterproofing services."
