Funktion Design & Build

We chose our contractor, Jay Funkhouser, on the recommendation of a friend. We were not in a hurry and Jay patiently worked with us to carefully develop a design for the new bathroom and choose materials that we loved. He provided guidance but didn't push us to settle for anything less than what we felt confident would be excellent. He came up with suggestions that added a little to the total cost but we are delighted that he did. The final result was exquisite, far better than what we had anticipated when we decided to do the remodel. A major problem was encountered with mounting one of the toilets because the original installation had been done incorrectly. Jay and his plumber persisted until the installation was perfect. We were so satisfied with Jay's professionalism and the high quality of his four subcontractor's work that we are proceeding with another bathroom remodel.

Our challenge was to remodel a very small bathroom to maximize function and make it seem bigger than it really is.  This was the first project we did with Jay Funkhouser.  He impressed us with his creativity, enthusiasm and willingness to listen to our needs.  After spending a lot of time in the planning stage, he mobilized his tradesmen to get the job done on time with minimal disruption to our lifestyle during the project.  Jay helped us with all purchase decisions, suggested places to shop for tile, fixtures and accessories.  He met us at these various locations, and answered all our questions.  He provided very valuable advice and guidance.  He has very good taste and a great eye for color.  He helped us choose granite and paint colors to match the tile we chose.  He did a great job on the tile design, and knew what looked best in terms of ways to orient the various tiles we chose.  He suggested an overall color scheme, dominated by the wall tile, but nicely accented by complementary smaller tiles and accent moldings.  He had a custom vanity built inspired by a design we liked in a show room he took us to to choose appliances and fixtures.  His experience in granite added several nice touches to the project, including the vanity granite counter top and granite window sill.  The floor was beautifully finished with stone tiles.  A few comments that illustrate Jay's attention to detail and creativity:  we debated about the right color to paint the walls and laboriously poured over books of paint swatches, choosing a few colors we liked.  Jay tried a few but didn't like the way it looked.  So he gradually added gray tint to one paint sample until the look was perfect.  He actually painted the walls 3 times until it was right - all on his own accord!  We hadn't said a word.  We also wanted a curved shower rod, but we didn't like the idea of hanging wet clothes on the rod and having them drip on the floor.  He found a rotating curved rod on the internet that solved the problem, and it really works well.  Not only does it provide more room during showering, it can be rotated back into the shower area to give more space in the bathroom after the shower.  We struggled to find wall sconces we liked, and Jay took on the challenge.  He knew what we liked, found one and brought it over.  He was absolutely right.  We loved it.  The final project was completed on time and to our complete satisfaction.   One other detail is worth noting.  Jay's holistic approach to remodeling made him aware of our interest in potentially remodeling our kitchen and attic.  He recommended running plumbing and electrical up to the attic while the walls were exposed in the bathroom in anticipation of future projects,  We realized the wisdom of the idea and authorized the relatively small expense to do so.  Based upon this experience, we hired Jay to remodel our kitchen, first floor half bathroom and basement.  We just can't say enough nice things about Jay.  We would recommend him without reservation.
