Charles A. Horton was born in Ripley, TN and relocated to Detroit, MI in his early teens. He graduated from Southeastern High School and attended Wayne University in Detroit. Charles married Alyce Horton in 1982 and currently resides in Lorain County, OH. Charles joined the ServiceMaster Company in 1982 and worked as a management consultant for the Corporate Office until 1984 when he purchased a ServiceMaster franchise. “I had no desire to ever be a part of a company that did cleaning, but I saw this opportunity to work for ServiceMaster as a chance to gain some managerial experience. Surprisingly, this was the very opportunity that permitted me to have my own business. So when I went to work for Corporate, I went with the mindset of eventually starting a franchise and buying my own business, although I didn’t know at the time how that dream would be fulfilled. As a kid growing up, I had always talked about wanting to be self-employed … that had always been my focus.” ServiceMaster by Horton began operations in Oberlin, OH in 1984 as a full service janitorial company. The business serves both residential and commercial accounts throughout Northeast Ohio. ServiceMaster by Horton has been awarded the “Special Achievement Award” from ServiceMaster Center Office and the “Lorain County Small Business Person of the Year Award.” The business was also awarded the “ServiceMaster Premier Circle Award” which made it one of the top 40 ServiceMaster business franchises in the US.
