We have a kitchen floor that we wanted to have refinished. Abbey Carpet came in, gave us a quote, and they recommended one of two guys to do the work. The first guy came in and really jacked up his price. He thought that we had told him it would cost $9,000 to replace the floor so he said he could resurface the floor for $4,800. We told him that online it said we should be able to get it done for $1,000 - $1,500. He had misunderstood the price we had given him so he immediately lowered his price down to half of what the true price of the floor was. So, we said we didn't want to work with this guy if he's going to be that way.
So, the second guy came in and he just made a hash of it. We could tell as soon as he was done sanding that he was going to leave marks all over the place. So we called Abbey Carpet to come look at it and they agreed that it was a mess. They said the only other guy that can do this is the guy we didn't want to use. I said we didn't feel too good about him because of the way he worked his price around. But, they reassured me that he was the best. Abbey Carpet also only charged me what they quoted me in the beginning. So, he did not add any more to our bill.
The guy came in and worked hard. There were some parts that we weren't satisfied with from the beginning, but he assured us that it would work it's way though. Finally when it came to the end of the job - I called back Abbey Carpet. I told them that the things we were concerned about, the edges and everything else, were still not done right. They did not look good. I said that I really feel strongly that I shouldn't pay them until it's fixed. And the Abbey Carpet guy asked me to let him think about it and to give him a day.
So, the next morning the guy who worked on the floor called me and just reamed me. I mean, he called me every name you can think of. He had told us at one point, that he was already into Abbey Carpet for $2,300. So, Abbey Carpet was going to have to pay him for more than Abbey Carpet was charging us. He called me a thief and a liar and said that if I don't pay them that he won't get paid.
So, I called Abbey Carpet and I told them we just wanted out of this mess and that we would send them the check for the rest of the money. About an hour later, he called me back as I was ready to send them the full check for the rest of the money, but he said if you are not satisfied how i could just send him a check for half of the remaining amount. So, I thought that was pretty nice. I told him if the floor works out the way they say it will in five or six months, I'll send you the rest of the money. So, if it blends back together around the edges and evens out, I will then send them the rest and he agreed that sounded fair.
The Abbey Carpet guy seemed very straight forward and honest, but we were very dissatisfied with the quality of people they recommended do the work. The people they contracted out I would never use again. Although, Abbey Carpet was very honest with and us and tried to fix things.
