Moving from VT to Ohio. Needed inspection. Xtreme performance performed the inspection for the emissions check. Car failed. Xtreme recommended nearly $900 in work. We opted for the minimum required for inspection which was probably less that what they said was required. The cost of the labor for the repair suddenly increased more than $100 over the original quote in the 2 hours between the time we approved the repair and when we picked up the vehicle.
The Camaro is getting up there in age and it is starting to need some of the considerably more involved repairs. My check engine light had come on and off for a few months, and the computer codes indicated my catalytic converter was probably going to need to be replaced soon. I was going to hold off replacing it until it was time for my next E-check, but a week ago, rust had opened up a hole in the cat converter, near the O2 sensor bracket. For a while, the rumbling noise coming out from the exhaust was fun, but the vibration and noise quickly became fatiguing on long commutes.
I took my car in to Xtreme, and they quoted me a fair price for the labor. An Original Equipment replacement for the cat converter was going to be somewhat expensive, which is normal for OE replacement parts. The converter was replaced once already on this car after suffering damage from a pot hole. The part on the car was already not an OE part. To try and save on parts cost, the folks at Xtreme were kind enough to allow me to purchase a generic 'universal fit' converter from a local parts store.
The next day, the folks at Xtreme gave me a call and said they would not be able to use the 'universal fit' converter without having to bend some of the exhaust pipes. They would also need to relocate a welded bracket. The space for the converter was constrained on one end by the pipes from the engine headers and on the other end by the O2 sensor bracket. The folks at Xtreme did not have a pipe bender, and I would need to go to a dedicated muffler shop. The 'universal fit' converters are lower cost than OE converters, but may require extra effort to connect up to the vehicle's exhaust.
Not wanting to prolong the amount of time the car was in the shop, I let the team install the OE replacement converter. The next day, I called to check on the car. They let me know that the bolts connecting the converter to header pipes had broken off when they tried to remove them. Considering the sheet metal in the cat converter had rusted through, that was completely understandable. The team at Xtreme said they would drill and re-tap the bolts. A little while later, they called and said the car would take even a little more time to get ready. Because a non-OE converter was being replaced with an OE-converter, the OE part wasn't quite fitting up to the exhaust lines as they had hoped.
The following day, I called to check on the vehicle, and the team said the technicians were testing for exhaust leaks, but it was just about done. When I went to go pick up the car, I expected to pay a little extra in labor for the additional time the team spent working on the car. However, the final balance was EXACTLY as quoted. Even more amazing, when I went to inspect the new part, I could see that the team had also replaced the pipes from the headers to the cat and then a small section of pipe after the cat. That's what the team had to do to get the job done, and they did it all for the price originally quoted. Talk about exceeding expectations! It's that level of unexpected service that will keep us coming back and recommending them to all of our friends and family.
My car now runs quieter than it did before the exhaust leak. It's a dream to drive again. I'm so thankful to the Xtreme team for such an excellent job and service!
