SpecialScapes recently installed a new paver patio in our backyard and we couldn't have been more happy with the experience we had with Jay and his team! Jay came out a few times before starting the project and always spent time with us going over design ideas and options which we really appreciated. The ended up removing our old wooden deck and replacing it with a much larger (600 sq ft) two level paver patio and built in fire pit. His team was very professional and friendly and even got the job done earlier than we expected! The final patio is amazing and exactly what we were hoping for! They even filled in the dirt around the patio and laid down grass seeds which I did not expect. We were very impressed by how efficient and hard working his team was while they were here. We would definitely hire them again and highly recommend them to anyone looking for patio/deck work!

It went very well! They were punctual and friendly. We weren't home a lot of the time they were doing the construction, but our neighbors commented on how detailed they were. They said they worked very **** ** it and they enjoyed watching them put it together.

Absolutely awesome. I am very happy. Jay is a professional. I like that he actually performs the work too. John is also excellent. They did a fantastic job. It looks amazing. I am very happy with their attention to detail as well. I didn't have to clean up anything after they left.

Jay and his team just finished installing a paver patio in my backyard. Everyone was so polite, professional and on time. They were a pleasure to work with and I LOVE my new patio! It's absolutely beautiful!! I would definitely recommend them and am looking forward to working with Jay again next year.

Project: Install Interlocking Pavers for Patios, Walks and Steps BEWARE!!! We hired this company to install a Unilock paver patio. Jay is not a Unilock authorized contractor. Jay was quick to take my money, but getting him here to get the job done after starting was difficult. The job is still not done. Additionally he removed a small section of sidewalk and damaged my brand new siding. What did incorrectly is as follows: He dug the patio in 3 sections, and did not dig it past the width as per instructions, he did not compact the base properly, he laid the pavers incorrectly and again did not follow guidelines. He made my step out of 2 different pavers that are not even on the contract, and it was made at an illegal height of 8 1/2". The poly sand was put down, wet down, then within an hour it rained, so the sand failed and continues to wash out. Some joints in the patio never had any sand. Pavers were not compacted as in instructions and the patio is not pitched correctly. I have many pictures showing the deficiencies as described. Trying to contact Jay is most frustrating as he only has an answering machine and seldom calls back. I am now looking for a new installer. All of the other installers all looked at this patio and actually pointed out even more deficiencies than I originally saw. This whole patio was installed incorrectly from the first dig and still remains undone. While function and foundation is most important to me for longevity, the aesthetics are awful as well. BEWARE! "Mrs. [Member Name Removed] is completely false in all of these accusations! First of all, the job was never completed because she FIRED us before we could finish the job! 27 years in business with great reviews and ratings all across the board and we have never dealt with a more UNREASONABLE woman in our professional history. So although these pictures look like shabby work, it is misleading because we never got to finalize the project because she fired us! The sand was not finished, the steps were only just begun and not completed yet, the bricks have now shifted because the edging was not completed yet, the patio was not backfilled along the edge, and our final quality review checks were not finished. The items she is complaining about are because the project was not finished before she FIRED US! My workers and I were all verbally attacked, degraded and screamed at. I was trying to explain to her that the job was not completed and trying to calm her down and she screamed at us and told us we were FIRED and to leave her property! We gathered our tools and we left. I contacted her the next day in hopes she had calmed down but this conversation was to no avail. Again, she would not let me get a full sentence in as she was screaming over me the entire conversation. Unilock representatives went to her house and advised her that the patio was constructed properly and there was no issue with the product, other than replacing the sand. I agreed with Unilock that the sand would need to be replaced because of heavy rains, which I told [Member Name Removed] we would do. However, because Unilock did not give her the answers she wanted to hear, she proceeded to report the representatives to their corporate office questioning their integrity! As for the siding damage, we told Mrs. [Member Name Removed] that we damaged the siding. She was having her siding contractor out there for another issue and said she would have him look at it and give us a price to fix the damage which we agreed to pay for. She has constructed this post to make it look like we never called, took her money, and did shabby work but never mentions the fact that she FIRED US and the job remains unpaid. We were more than willing to finish the job, and we tried to go over all of her concerns detail by detail but she was so unreasonable and could not hold a civil conversation so this project remains unfinished. Unfortunately, the situation has now been turned over to legal counsel. ****CONTRACTORS BEWARE!******"

We can't say enough good things about this company. We wanted a pergola to provide some shade on our patio. Jay listened to our concerns and worked with us to build a pergola that would bring us the most shade possible. His communication was excellent; I never had to call him once. He called to keep us updated, showed up on time as scheduled. He and his fellow workers were very nice to deal with. The pergola turned out beautiful! Would definitely recommend SmartScapes and would use them again for future outdoor projects.

It went excellent! Jay and his team are responsive and detailed. He kept me up-to-date throughout the whole process, and made sure I was comfortable with everything before we wrapped up the project. When you think about contractors, the image sometimes comes to mind of inconsistent scheduling, exaggerating and deadlines/ budgets missed. Completely the opposite with Specialscapes! They completed the project over a month early (thanks to the weather), on-time, on budget, professionally and graciously. I'd use them again in a heartbeat and I highly recommend them!

Warning: My deck was built without a blueprint. SpecialScapes built my deck and it was a painful experience. There were several issues...the foreman did not use the blueprint that the owner (Jay) created. My husband and I sat down with Jay and talked through our design. Because the foreman didn't use the design we discussed, the deck posts had to be torn out multiple times due to lack of symmetry. To top that off, Jay did not volunteer to rip out the posts and redo the lack of symmetry, he tried to use "band-aid" fixes, such as building posts that were only for aesthetics but not cemented in the ground. This obviously didn't look right and ultimately had to be redone. As the customer, we felt extremely uncomfortable because it required a lot of "pushing" to get the job done right. Jay sat down with us and admitted that he did not handle this job properly. They did not show up when they said they were going to, they built the deck wrong and the gates are uneven. We ultimately agreed that the project was 'as good as it was going to get' and we paid the company. Now, fast forward a few years (my deck was built about 3 years ago), the gates on the deck that I paid $500 for (each) are sagging even more and the railings are warping. We had a tree come down on our property and we need repair work done. SpecialScapes came out and quoted us in February and said they could do the work the following week. It is now 7/18/16 and they still have not done the work and they will not return our phone calls. This is an extremely unprofessional company. I would spare yourself the headaches and time, and use another contractor for your building needs.

Jay was extremely professional and helpful. We had received many bids for a deck or patio. None of which really met the vision for what we had in mind. Jay was able to do that and more and keep within our budget. The plans allowed us to complete the project in steps. The crew was phenomenal: professional, polite, neat. We have a lovely paver patio which was completed in the time frame specified. In the spring, we will add a retaining wall. My daughter and son-in-law,also, used Specialscapes. There project is on a much larger scale. Theirs is also being completed in stages. They are so happy with the results, we are referring Spevialscapes and Jay to everyone we can!
