Was prompt; suggested a darker stain because of pet stains on floor; almost no dust and cleaned up before leaving. Would recommend to others and will use again in the future. Had 4 quotes for same job and his price was about $250 cheaper. Excellent job.
Contacted Andrew Refinishing after reading Angie's List reviews and made an appointment for an estimate. We had already had one other estimate and Andras (Andras Farkas is the owner) was within a $100 or so of our other estimate. Andras may have been lower, but to be honest, I don't remember if he was lower or not. The estimates were close and we chose Andras because we were impressed with him. Very nice man. I rated him an F for professionalism not for his demeanor or conduct, but because of his refusal to take responsibility for his very poor installation.
We ordered our hickory hardwood floor direct from the mill, the company is Baird Brothers. Baird Bros. delivered the flooring on May 29th, 2014. The flooring went directly into our living room to acclimate to the room as per the instructions from the mill.
Andras came over to perform the job on July 1st, 2014. He removed the old flooring from our foyer and installed the new flooring in the foyer. He also installed the flooring in our family which was previously carpeted. We removed the carpet prior to Andras coming over.
After the job was done, I did notice a few gaps in the flooring in a few places but I let it go, not smart on my part. Over the next few months of living with the flooring and cleaning it, we noticed more and more gaps. Many of the gaps are so wide you can see the unstained tongues. I even found a couple of places were you can see the nails that obviously were not driven far enough into the wood thereby causing the flooring not to mate together. There were also marks or small chips that looked like his nail gun may have caused. I began to find nails were he "top nailed" the wood and did a poor job of counter sinking and filling.
Well we got busy at work and then there was a medical issue so we put off contacting Andras. A threshold he put in was loose and got worse so we finally called him. He came over in the beginning of March this year, 2015.
After showing Andras the gaps, he immediately blamed the flooring stating that it had shrunk. He said it must not have been in the house to acclimate. After I told him that the flooring was in the house for a month, he said the wood was milled to tight and he could not fit the tongue and grooves together. Then he said the area was too small (the gaps that we showed him were in the hallway but the gaps are throughout the two rooms were there is plenty of room). His only answer to fix the problem was to use filler in the gaps, then refinish the entire new flooring and then stain it. Andras did nail down the loose threshold and tried to pour some stain in a few of the gaps to hide the unfinished tongues from being visible and then left.
Well Baird Brothers is NOT a discount mill or an outlet store like a Lumber Liquidators. We paid top dollar for a high quality flooring product. The flooring was $6+ per sq. ft.. Our flooring, 445 sq. ft., thresholds, transition pieces and vent covers came to $3268.39. Baird Brothers is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau and is a highly reputable business. As for his contention the flooring was not milled correctly, if that really was the case, why did he continue to install the floor? If there was a problem with the product, shouldn't he have stopped and informed us of the problem instead of installing all of it? No, the wood was milled just fine. You could put pieces together by hand.
There is no problem with the flooring, only the installation/workmanship. Andras offered no real remedy and would not take responsibility for the poor installation job. Our new hickory flooring has to be completely removed to correct this problem. The gaps are large and very noticeable and throughout the entire two rooms.
"I installed the hardwood flooring provided by the customer. I installed the required underlayments below the flooring. The floor was installed in the summer during high humidity levels. When I completed the job the customer was satisfied and provided payment. During the winter when humidity levels lowered the flooring contracted, causing gaps. Humidity levels in the house have to remain constant to prevent contracting and expanding of the hardwood flooring."
"I apologize for your dissatisfaction with your baseboard. Baseboards should always be painted after the floors have been refinished. I was careful when staining to not get any stain on the baseboard but fresh paint is susceptible to damage when sanding. I always tell my customers to leave the painting of the baseboard until after the floors are done or there will be a chance of touch up work afterwards. I hope you were satisfied with how your hardwood floors turned out despite the damage to your baseboards."
he was punctual, reliable, honest and a pleasure to work with.
I'm placing my house in the market due to a job relocation so I need it the hardwood floor job to be done soon.
Mr Andrew work me in his schedule & the entire job was done in 24hrs.
I called & the next day he came to give me a quote ; scheduled me in a week. I explained of my situation if all possible to squeeze me any sooner & he did. Mr Andrew was so considerate & call me to arrange it sooner. My house looks beautiful !
Professional , courteous, efficient all those adjectives that every costumer look in a service that is Mr Andrew's refinishing Co and more
Thanks Again
I would recommend Andrew's Refinishing to anyone needing quality and reasonably priced hardwood refinishing done. I am VERY HAPPY with the service.
Apparently he has access to fairly good engineered hardwood floor. He brought over a sample of about 3" width with 5 mm surface layer. His pricing is very comparable to what I paid for my 2 mm curupay layered 1/2"-thick engineer floor. I think I will have him come over and do the living room next.
My wife and I have nothing but superior praises for him.
We are planning to have more hardwood floors installed and we know that we will not shop around; we will call Andrew's Flooring when we are ready to install the new floors.
