Despite having several large trees in and near our yard, we decided to investigate the possibility of installing solar panels. We were upfront with the companies we contacted that our main concern was viability for our particular site, but also made it clear we would like to do the installation if at all practical. Icon was the most responsive and also the least expensive of the quotes we got. On her initial visit, Rachel, our salesperson, expressed concerns about the trees but said we would get a good estimate of potential electric energy production based on a follow-up site visit. We proceeded to that stage, and based on the estimates decided to install panels on both south-facing and east-facing sections of our roof. Jaye at Icon was particularly good to work with, quickly generating new plans as our thinking progressed. The installation went well, with one notable exception. The wiring through our attic was performed sloppily, with excess cable winding across the insulation and several flexible ducts inadvertently knocked loose from the collector box supplying HVAC to the upstairs. I felt that Icon did not take full responsibility, but the electrician absolutely did, and made things right. In the end, I give him a lot of credit - and also Icon for selecting such a responsible individual to subcontract their electrical work to. We have had the panels for over a year now. We have had no issues with any of the equipment, no roof leaks, and much lower electric bills. Still, production was below Icon's estimate by more than 30%. I would be the first to admit that our situation is more difficult than average to estimate, but this amount of error is surprising and disappointing. It is small consolation that Icon was not the only company to be so over-optimistic. Overall, I think Icon did about as good a job as possible for our situation. I just wish we had a more realistic idea going in what we were likely to get out of the system. [Cost does not include tax credit.]

We started with Icon due to the recommendation of a friend who had done a lot of research on Solar panels as well as providers. I contacted them via the internet, then discussed on phone after they looked at a Google earth image to see how much sun my roof might have. The next step was a visit from Nathan who did a great job of explaining the advantages of a solar system and a very detailed analysis based on our exact situation. We spoke to neighbors who had solar, which led us to ask several questions which were answered well by the Icon engineers and others and we chose to go ahead. Next step was a site evaluation in which all roof surfaces are measured, attic spaces checked to determine roof strength etc. Efficient crew here as well. Last step was installation which could not have gone better. The electrician (local guy hired by Icon) was there by 7:45am, we walked around and through the house to determine how to run wires from roof attic spaces to the panel in the basement. They started working right away followed a few hours later by the Icon crew from Ohio (where the company is based). By approximately 5pm the whole system was started up and was generating power. All phases were very professionally done and well coordinated so as not to waste any of my time away from work. I really appreciated the detailed analysis of the amount of time it would take for the system to pay for itself (much less than I originally thought) and answering all of the questions we had not thought about that they brought up so we would be informed. Excellent company that does plenty of business in the Indy area as they seem to be here frequently. Top notch!

We are very happy with the installation and follow-up. The system has been providing all our electricity for the past 3 months and we have been pleasantly surprised to find that the battery is supplying about 1/3 of our energy consumption. We did have a problem with the software after the installation but someone came and fixed it in a timely manner. Our only negative was that once we had paid our deposit we did not feel like Icon was very responsive when we contacted them to find out when to expect installation. Up to the point when they got paid they had been very prompt with returning calls, etc. but it took longer than expected for them to get the system in and schedule installation and they did not do a very good job at keeping us informed. We were not so much concerned about the delay, as they can't really control the supply and demand of the system, but we wanted to know what was going on when the estimated time for installation passed and we had not been contacted. Once installation was scheduled things went smoothly.

A fast clean installation! Team was professional and completed the work on the schedule provided. Only delay was with getting Duke to put in the new meter.

  • A professional crew that performed well with the installation.
  • They even came out and worked on a Sunday to complete installation so we could claim our valuable tax credit for 2015.
  • They referred us to state plans and a local bank that helped with a loan process with very attractive interest rate financing for the project.

Overall, an excellent job. We are enjoying solar energy.

of electricticy by buying a heat pump.I canceled planned meeting a my location.  I decided the cost is too high to install solar panels and I decided the better option for me is to lower the usage .  The cost is much higher to produce more electric to operate the resistance coil heater and the cost is less to operate a air-exchange heat pump.  I did not need the solar panel installers to come  to site.  I will not use solar panel at this time.  I will lower electric bill by lowering electric usage by using a electric air exchange heat pump by 40%

Icon Solar’s installation team was the picture of perfection. They were the most professional team of workmen I have ever had work on a project for me. In fact, I can’t think of anything they could have done better. They completed their work perfectly, and quickly, and were far more courteous than most. When they were done, they showed me that my meter was actually running backward. There are very few joys in life better than seeing that for the first time. The electricians actually did me a favor while they were here by drilling a hole that will make a future electrical project much easier much for me. Similarly the installers on the roof noticed a loose set of shingles that I kept meaning to fix. They never said anything to me but, much to my surprise, the shingles were repaired when they left, and the repair was far superior to the one I would have made. Their one B is for Responsiveness. The only reason they didn’t get an A there is because there was one problem related to the calculation of my ’25-year Benefit of Solar’. Since after an email discussion they made this perfectly right for me, the B is well deserved, and while it isn’t a perfect score, it is so nearly perfect that I highly recommend them, IF you follow this one piece of advice. Anyone planning to have a solar electric system installed by any company should work with the electric company first. I was shocked to learn that my electric coop did not have policies favorable to the installation of solar electric systems on residences. I understand they are working to improve that situation, but I still recommend that everyone ask for all the details from their electric company before contacting any solar electric installation company. This is doubly true if you are a member of an electrical coop. Sometimes they are legally unable to make solar installations more desirable due to agreements with their current electricity supplier.

I filled out their email contact form and they called the next day to set up an appointment for someone to come to my home and quote a system. They spent about an hour with me and answered all of my questions. They left a list of customers, both residential and commercial - all of them that I contacted had nothing but excellent things to say. One customer told me about how the electric companies were impressed with their work. This is important for a grid-tied system - the electric company must certify the system otherwise you cannot connect to the grid. I have nothing but positive things to say about the company after dealing with them. I very much want solar panels, but they proved to still be too expensive. That is not to say that Icon is charging too much - they are quite competitive with other companies, but after talking to several others, Icon is the only one I would want to do business with. They are the only company that did not bash one technology over another - they understand the difference between a central inverter and a microinverter and when to use each. One is not inherently better or worse than the other - they just need to be used properly for the best results. This is an outstanding company - I am hoping that the price of solar equipment comes down so that I can install the panels within the next 5-6 years.

I was mislead by ICON,specifically by a smooth talking salesman. This company lead me to believe that their solar system set up with 32 solar panels (255-wattS each) and Enphase Microconverters would yield 1,108.8 KWH/ month and generate 13 SREC's per year and that a 24 panel system would yield 831.6 KWH/year here in SW Ohio.
I have been told by two other solar providers in Ohio that this output at the house electric box is simply not possible with 32 or 24 solar panels. No system today is that efficient. In fact ,to obtain an output of 1,108.8 KWH/ month I would need at least 36 solar panels and this might yield an output average of 1,036 KWH per month at best. In addition I told the sales person that I wanted solar panels made in the USA. They assured me that Suniva Optimus solar panels sold in Georgia are American made, but it turns out they are foreign made and put together in Georgia !!
I have decided to sign a contract with 3rd Sun Solar in Ohio. Their cost estimate for a 9.000 kW system and a yield of 1,036 KWH per month with American made products came in at a significantly lower price , $4,400 less. In addition this company has been very professional in their interactions with me to date. While the solar set up by Icon may work fine, I do not like being mislead as to telling me what I can expect in energy production from their system. In addition I was lead to believe that the salesperson had inadvertently miscalculated the cost to a lower price than it should be but he would stand by this cost estimate. Another sales gimmick. I would be very cautious in accepting what you are told by the sales people from this company at face value.

"Icon Solar has not provided any product or service to this member and this member is not in our customer data base. Based upon a review of our CRM regarding communications with this member, it appears the Icon Solar salesperson was professional, courteous, responsive and honest. A meeting scheduled with the salesperson was cancelled by the member due to a medical emergency in the member’s family. When the salesperson later attempted to reschedule, the member advised that he had purchased from another company. It is not possible for this member to accurately claim that Icon Solar did not meet expectations since Icon Solar was not given the opportunity to perform. It does appear the member may have been duped, but not by Icon Solar. The information the member provides in his review is not consistent with the written communications in our files, and some of the information is demonstrably false. For example, the Suniva OPT panels are not “foreign made” as the member claims (see Suniva.com for the facts). If the member would have contracted with Icon Solar for his solar power generation system, it is likely the member would have joined our actual customers in grading Icon Solar straight A’s across the board."

It went very well as it was a big job. They finished in two days. The instillation of the panels took one day and the electrical set up took about one day as well. It was very professionally done.

I had my solar panels installed in April. Usually my bill in May and June is around $45 and since I had the solar panels installed my bills for those months was $7. Between the tax credit and the grant I only had to pay half the price. So far I've had it for 4 months and my meter goes backwards. I had 17 panels put on the house; the panels have a 25 year guarantee. I'm extremely pleased with my return, it's better than a 15% return as an investment. Everything is hooked up to the computer; you can go online to see what each individual panel is producing. If I produce more than I use they'll give me a credit.

The service went great. They were very good at communicating. They handeled all the permits on this project. The workers that came out cleaned up after themselves and were nice to work with.
