2) The salesman bragged that the installers worked exclusively for Carpetland and they did not subcontract to other installers.
The panel truck that installers drove to my house was copper color and the sides were rusted out. There we no signs or logo's on the truck to identify the installers as being from Carpetland. We did not know they were from Carpetland until we saw them start pulling carpet out of the back of the truck. The men were dressed in jeans and had no identifying badges or other id's to identify them as representing Carpetland and they looked like freelance sub-contractors.
3) One of the reasons we wanted our son there was because the salesman told us that the installers would not move any furniture, and we found out the day before they they would and they did help to move furniture to clear the rooms for installation.
4) When he came to measure the rooms prior to installation the salesman did it with my teenage daughter present by herself. Although I had informed his company that I was on my way to the my house. When I got to my my house he said that he had already measured the rooms and he was speaking to my teenage daughter. On the day of installation, the carpet installers informed me that the salesman had miss-measured one of the bedrooms and the piece that they bought along for my daughter's bedroom was too little. They left it on the floor and said that would have to come back
5) When we got the message that they were going install the right carpet and living room carpet the following Saturday, the 24th. the message said they would come earlier between 8 and 9 AM. Again they called at 9:20 to say they were coming at 9:30 AM. This time they got it all right and we were finally able to put my daughter's room back in order. I paid the installers the balance as requested..
6) I have complained to the salesman and the company saying that everything they claimed that differentiated them from their competition was false, and they ended up doing everything that the salesman said the Carpetland does not do.
From the beginning, my paperwork showed the wrong finish color. I repeatedly had to correct this with Schumacher. The flooring was ordered in the right color but when my shoe trim was delivered, it was not only the wrong color, it had been bundled for delivery before it was dry and it was a sloppy mess. New trim was ordered to match the stock color of the floor and was installed the following week while I was at work. I arrived home to find that there was a wide variation in colors on the different pieces of trim that were installed. Some of the most mismatched pieces were installed in conspicuous areas. We complained that the installer could have at least used those pieces inside closets or other areas where they would not be noticed. Our sales rep said the installers are not expected to do anything like that. ?It?s all about getting the job done as quickly as possible and getting to the next job.? His words. The installer also left without touching up the exposed cut ends of the trim with matching stain. Our sales rep confirmed that this is a standard part of the process and should have been completed. When our rep came out to inspect the work himself he said the installer should never have used certain pieces of the trim because it was such a bad match.
My husband and I were baffled that a custom flooring company could not stain trim to match the flooring they sold. The transition trim between our tile and the new floors was a perfect match and it turned out that it came from the manufacturer. We asked about getting shoe trim from them and were told that the manufacturer?s price on shoe trim was so high that Schumacher wouldn?t even quote their trim prices. Their policy was to stain their own trim to save the customer money. This would be fine if they could actually match the trim.
Schumacher agreed to replace the trim with the manufacturer?s product at their cost and had it installed by their field supervisor who kept the track record for mistakes going by showing up with the trim for another job. He returned the same day with the correct trim and but it wasted two more hours of his time and mine.
Every issue we had with this project seems easily preventable with better quality controls and procedures. Details matter but Schumacher seems to prioritize speed and ?getting to the next job? over getting the details right. What should have been a two or three-day job, took five days over the course of several weeks. While we were pleased with the end result, getting there was a frustrating and prolonged process. Also, It would have been nice to get a follow-up call from our sales rep to ask if we were satisfied with the final product but we have not heard from him or anyone at Schumacher.
The installers were Brent and John. They couldn't have been nicer. The swept little by little as they placed the flooring down.
They had to return the next day for some finishing. We have no complaints with the floor work and are very pleased with the quality of the floor.
The transition strip between the floor and the carpet could have been put on a little better but I think it may also be that we are looking at everything so carefully. I might (or might not) have a carpet installer come out and re-do the strip.
A little more communication the day before would have eased some of our anxiety.
Overall, I would not use this company again.
Step two was the actual finishing. As we had to leave the house for this process, we had to trust Schumacher to do the work properly. We came back and IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. Caesar and his crew paid attention to every detail. When we found some minor issues, we got a prompt response.
We then had a major problem: the contractor who cleaned our carpet at the end of the kitchen renovation dragged his hoses over the wood floor and caused a number of scratches. He denied responsibility and pointed out issues in the wood floor finishing involving too much poly pooling in small areas. While trying to get him to accept responsibility, I called Larry at Schumacher. He was very accommodating, gave me an estimate for the carpet cleaner's share, and said that Schumacher would completely cover a re-do of the poly coating.
We had it done last week and we could not be happier both with the work and with the follow through.
By the way, Schumacher looked even better since the carpet cleaner never took responsibility for the damage he caused. We, happily, paid the additional repair by Schumacher knowing it would be done well AND that they stand behind their work.
The installation crew was great (timely, professional, qualtity work, good clean-up). I work out of my home and they were able to coordinate their noise with quiet time I needed to make calls. We like their results.
The only down-sides were some internal communication issues within Schumacher (they told me one date for the delivery of the wood and it was missed; we have cathedral ceilings and they did not tell the installation crew they needed tall ladders [I let them use my ladder] and wide plastic sheets to segregate the areas to be demolished (from dust); and they provided the crew one box long of one type of wood and on box short on the other, this resulted in an extra half day of installation) [these need to be corrected; they would have been a huge scheduling issues if I did not work from home]
The subs typically arrived later than scheduled, the job took longer than planned, and the Schumacher sales rep was sometimes difficult to reach for questions and changes, but the final product is excellent.
