TONY'S CUSTOM FLOORS

This job was a real nightmare. We got a wink-wink unofficial recommendation for the company from a salesman at a home improvement store. My daughter met with Ron Thomas who appeared to be knowledgeable about flooring and quoted a great price. Later, Tony came with Ron and said that Ron was wrong about the subfloor and that he quoted us too high of a price. When Tony asked Ron how he arrived at the price, Ron said "I don't know." We told them the types of thresholds we wanted for the doorways and the hearth area. Ron told us we would need to have our antique hardwood doors cut down by .5" to accommodate the new floors. On the first day, Ron showed up and then left about 8 minutes later. He never came back until the job was completely done, despite the fact that he assured us that HE does good work. He did not work at all. The guys he brought must be buddies or men he got off the street. They were not professional and did not know what they were doing. I mentioned that I was unhappy with the choppiness of the flooring (they were using scraps, instead of planks, which looks incredibly sloppy). I said that they did not need to be stingy with the material since I had conferred with Ron THREE TIMES before purchasing my non-returnable flooring to be sure I had enough. But they insisted that there was not enough and, when I left the room, continued to use tiny scraps. (I now have two FULL, UNUSED boxes of gorgeous long planks which I cannot return, while my floor is a hodgepodge mosaic of small wood pieces.) I had to remind the workmen what transitions and quarter-rounds I wanted since it was clear that neither Ron nor Tony had communicated any of this to the workmen. The workmen took measurements and everything, but later, Ron and Tony claimed they had no idea we wanted these things (which we had by now discussed several times with everyone) and said that it would cost more money. They bought the wrong thresholds and stained them a near black color which was nothing like our flooring. They did a horrible install job, splitting the wood on the thresholds and sloppily gluing things down. There were gaps everywhere. As it turned out, our doors did not need to be cut down at all, so not only did we spend time and money unnecessarily, but we had butchered our gorgeous antique doors and had drafts coming in from the large gaps. Ron was always promising to come back to fix things, and when I took time from work or making other plans to be home, he never showed. And he never had the decency to tell me he wasn't coming. One time, he went out of town. Another time, I waited for 4 hours and called and he said he could only come after his current job around 9pm. I said that would be fine, I just want this over with. He never showed. I reported this company to the Better Business Bureau and the lies which they sent in response to my complaint was so inaccurate that it was clear how uninformed, negligent, and absent they were on the job.
