They came out and I was told that it would be $460 to clear the drain. (They advertised that it would be free if they couldn't clear it and the only reason I agreed to the price initially) The tech used the drain auger to punch a hole through the problem which allowed the water to "flow" again. The technician told me that was all he could so since there were tree roots causing the problem. He said that they could dig up at the problem area for $6000 - $12000 depending on what they found. I said I couldn't do that and so I paid $460 for the service and he left with a camera inspection scheduled to come soon after. The camera inspection tech came and said that there were roots. I asked what they were going to do about it and I was told that he would have the prior tech come back out to clear the line. He gets on the phone with the prior tech and I was told that he was refusing to come back out because he "didn't want to get his auger stuck at that spot and force me to dig it up". At this time I'm being told that it isn't just tree roots but that the drain was collapsed. I was told "to use a bucket to put used toilet paper in and not flush it down the toilet" because it was going to back up again. He left and I called the company requesting them to come back out to do what their website says they do which is to make the initial punch through followed by an expanding blade to clear the roots. A short while later I get a phone call from a manager saying he was not sending anyone back out and even though I stated their website explanation of the process to him, he said there was nothing more they could do for me. When I said "So basically, I just paid $460 for a bandaid" He said "yes, it happens that way sometimes, but without digging up where the problem is, there is nothing more they can do." I just had another company (Eco plumbers) out that actually cleared the line and only charged me $93. From their website" When the Roto-Rooter man tells you your sewer pipe is clogged with tree roots and you need a sewer cleaning, what exactly does he do? Usually he will begin by feeding a small cable with a sharp blade on the end to bore through the clog and allow it to drain. Next, he will use a larger cable machine with a 4-inch or 6-inch c-shaped blade on the end. The blades are spring loaded and are gently squeezed so they fit into the pipe. Once inside, they spring outward and hug the pipe wall. When the machine turns on, the blades spin and shave the pipe walls of all debris and roots that have penetrated the sewer pipe at the pipe joints or through cracks. The old Roto-Rooter ads bragged of shaving your pipes "Razor-Kleen." Sewer cleaning can be time consuming and tedious but it's very effective and will keep roots at bay for about a year in most cases. If the plumber pulls out the cable and notices mud on it, that indicates a serious break in the pipe. The technician will suggest a video inspection using a remotely operated camera. He will show you the condition of the pipe live on a TV monitor and present you with sewer repair options and estimates.

Nothing went as expected. Had problems with the primary bathroom backup, and technician pulled the hall toilet instead. Immediately mentioned needing a $5,800 clean out since the house never has had one. They said they used a camera, however, no image was ever shown to us. Camera equipment had to be charged while they were at our home. Estimate had both $5,000, and $50,000 on separate quote lines, asking me to sign, saying he knew the $50,000 was a mistake. I refused to sign, and they appeared to put a copy and paste signature on several of the estimate lines from my signature on the work order that day, for the clean out repair of $697, which backup was no better, possibly worse the next day! Very unhappy!
