The staff was excellent, from design assistance to execution. The design team used software and electronic communication to finalize the design and show us how it will look. The lead carpenter was very professional, kept the support workers moving along, always took time to answer questions and keep us posted. We felt very comfortable with him in the home while we were not there.
Job took about 11 weeks. They were a few weeks late getting started but executing according to the original schedule after that.
RDI was the most expensive estimate we received, but it was clear from the beginning that they were serious about our kitchen job and hence we were very confident they would get it done in a timely fashion with no issues. Worth the price. One minor complaint is that their estimate to replace a patio door was almost twice what we were able to get from Lowes. We ended up getting the door from Lowes and the RDI lead carpenter worked with us and Lowes to get the installation scheduled and done properly. Oddly enough the new window installation was reasonably priced by RDI. I guess they just didn't want to deal with that patio door.
Erich and Christine listened to what our needs and wants were. They worked diligently to come up with a plan to accomplish those needs and wants. Their team of expert carpenters executed the plans. They were able to accommodate us and work around our needs not only in the planning process, but also during construction. Their lead carpenter, Randy, was punctual, hard-working, very knowledgeable and the quality of work was simply outstanding. There wasn't a problem, no matter how complex, that Randy couldn't solve.
The entire experience with Remodeling Designs from beginning to end was thoughtful, care free, and enjoyable. We knew we were in good hands working with Remodeling Designs and they not only met, but far exceeded that expectation.
Nothing else was done correctly the first time. The original estimate was five weeks, start to finish took a full three months. I was provided with a very extensive notebook prior to starting construction, including blueprints. I was promised an on site project manager, which never occurred. The person performing most of the work was not given the blueprints. The electrician wasn't told we were moving the island, so the wires were placed in the wrong place and had to be moved. The cabinet doors didn't match the remaining cabinet doors - though I had stressed on numerous occassions that if I replaced some (not all ) of the cabinets that I expected them to match. Despite the original designs, the electrician and construction lead decided to go from three light fixtures to two. I had to change to a bottom draft cook top after numerous un-necessary holes were cut into my ceiling and garage walls - these all had to then be repaired. I would have expected to have been told that a top venting cooktop simply wasn't going to work in my home. I asked several times before I bought the new appliances if I had to do look for anything in particular and was told no. The drywall contractor was surprised when my teen age daughter arrived home after school and used profanity with her. They apologized, but I had to make alternative arrangements for her after school as I couldn't risk this type of behavior again - and again, this project ended up taking three months. The floor demolition occured within 2 - 3 days, but the person didn't know how to level the floor. Rather than call in someone with more experience, he tried to talk me into using different tile than we had chosen as it was going to be easier. After I requested that someone with more experience be consulted, I was finally told the original design could be accommodated. There were 3 - 4 discussions before agreement was reached. This was followed by a period of 2 - 3 weeks when the primary contractor never worked a full week, and didn't work on the floor when he was in our home. I was down to the sub floor for over four weeks before any new tile was laid. Laying new tile took two weeks, an additional 2 - 3 days to grout it. I am still using a putty knife to remove the excess grout that was left along the seams. For eleven weeks we didn't have any cooking appliances and the refrigerator was in our dining room. Given the extensive time period, the dust and dirt spread throughout the first floor of my home. They ask for some space for storage, which is to be expected, but we found tools throughout most of our home.
I never had an accurate work schedule. I was given three versions, but all milestones had been missed by the time I was given a new version of the schedule. Due to repeated absences from the primary contractor (they don't send a crew - one person does all of the floor work, the wood work, etc. so when they're sick nothing gets done). Over Labor Day, between illness and the holiday/ nothing happened for a solid week. The contractor then asked to work on the weekend, so we finally agreed, this added disruption to our family above and beyond what we had already experienced. Dring the Saturday they worked they laid five pieces of tile. This did not justify having our family be out of our home for yet another day. When the wall/cabinets where the refrigerator was to go was done, I asked when the refrigerator could get returned to the kitchen and was told there were tradeoffs. The refrigerator was not returned to its spot for another three weeks. After they were two months behind schedule, they finally sent out a crew of 5 - 6 people for two days to get various items finished. I thought it was poor that the project had to be that far behind schedule before they sent additional people. Agan, if they had provided the onsite project manager as promised, the delays could have been addressed long before it stretched into such a lengthy time period. My husband and I both spent time every evening looking through what had been done to ensure we were moving towards what we'd agreed upon. On top of what was noted above, we had to have the person return to match up woodwork that hadn't been lined up properly, as well as reinstall a cabinet support that was't measured properly and didn't go from the top to the bottom on the cabinet'frame. We also called in our regular plumber after the job was done to reinstall the garbage disposal - which had never worked properly. I was told the'd had a plumber come out and look at it, but did not notice any improvement so we brought in our own to get that issue resolved. We currently believe that all visual issues have finally been addressed, but its impossible to tell if grouting/sealing/general installation was done properly. Given the numerous issues we experienced, we are concerned what things will look like in 4 - 5 years.
and quot;We just received your request for Valued Client Feedback (enclosed). We started circling each item “5” indicating we strongly agreed with all the good things listed on the form; then we realized that our whole experience, from top to bottom, was simply outstanding so we put a big circle around the entire “5” column.
We could not be more pleased with the beautiful results and our total experience with your team of top flight professionals. We have friends who are incredulous that we would simply give you the keys to the house and leave for 3 months while you overhauled so much of it. We had no reservations whatsoever. You are all great people in whom we had the utmost trust and confidence; and you certainly lived up to that trust and confidence. Indeed, while we were away you made magic happen. What a beautiful job! The kitchen is magnificent. The design, the colors, the granite, the lighting, all combine to make it a thing of beauty and function. The new, wider, and more accessible doors in the master bedroom and laundry room are more like pieces of fine furniture than doors. The new fireplace and redesigned family room give us so much more space and a much cleaner, more open design. The 3D TV and sound system you installed are awesome! Every detail in every area is perfect: the precise miters on the crown moldings; the fit and finish of the cabinets; the tile backsplash; the new lighting and dimmers; the paint and carpeting; the refinished hardwood floors; and I especially appreciated the new threshold Brian installed with a perfectly beveled edge to accommodate my wheelchair. Every detail, no matter how small, was thought of and then completed to perfection. Finally, you kept us up to date and involved through those picture-filled emails, a blog, and even the use of Skype. We felt completely part of the entire project even though we were 2,300 miles away.
The words “thank you” seem totally insufficient, but that said, thank you. You have our heartfelt appreciation. We will be happy to serve as a reference for you. And, as you are far more like friends and family than a contractor, we hope to keep in close touch in the years ahead.
Sincere thanks and best wishesand quot;
