We're going to have a few different projects done in the next year or so, and I joined Angie's List explicitly so as not to end up with marginally competent buffoons such as LNF again.
We purchased all of the major materials ourselves at Home Depot. Luc said he could get the bathroom done over a couple weeks. This was important, as I was 8 months pregnant with our third child at the time and on home bedrest when they started. The work took about 6-8 weeks to complete. It's easy to remember as I was schleping up and down the stairs at all hours of the day and night to use the secondary bathroom because they had the main bathroom in an unusable state for that amount of time. If you've ever been heavily pregnant on bedrest, you surely remember the frequency of your bathroom trips and can relate.
The general MO for this crew was to show up on the day they deemed our project worthy to work on, realize they were missing a bunch of basic things (screws, nails, adhesives), then leave a lackey behind to do some minor (demolition at first, whining, NAPPING IN OUR GARAGE) work while Luc spent a couple hours at Home Depot. When he returned, they'd do actual work for an hour or so and disappear for a few days. Luc would tell us he'd call us later to know when they were coming back. The answer was always a few days out. Lather, rinse, repeat. At that time, general contractors were in high demand, which is why we were willing to put up with that. This was how the whole deal went. No, there weren't things going on like drying time or the like causing the delays, just whatever whim Luc was on that day.
We had some of the drywall removed/replaced as part of the original scope at work, quoted at $3500. During the process, Luc said, "hey, why don't we replace all your drywall, it won't cost that much more". $1200 more. That is "a lot" more in this size of project if you ask me.
A cost gauging I did prevent was on the flooring. Luc sent us to a specialty store because he had a discount setup with these people. We'd priced out the flooring we wanted at Home Depot previously (standard stuff, nothing high end), so I had a good idea of what it should cost. We went, we chose. They called us back a few days later with an astronomical price, about three times the Home Depot price. They were "unable to offer us a discount due to the quantity". Note the room sizes above, very small, which was known upfront, not a shocker. Anyway, we quickly cancelled that order and went to Home Depot to order. I understand that these places need to make a buck, but that was ridiculous. This company has since went out of business, no great shock.
The end result was of mixed quality. The ceramic tile on the floor looks good and has held up, except for one of the pieces that is mostly under the toilet. I say mostly, because there is a visible gap (about 1"x3") between the edge of the tile where it was cut for the flange and the edge of the toilet.
We had them put up an acrylic shower surround for the bathtub/shower. They used an adhesive that melted the acrylic, such that you could see the glue lines on the finished side of the surround. We had that replaced the next year by a pair of handymen that did a good job. I'd give those handymen a favorable review if I could remember their names (if they are an "official" company yet, I hired them from Craig's List.)
Likewise, I'd give favorable reviews to the electrical sub and the drywall sub. Both did quality work in a minimum number of trips. Again, I wish I could remember their company names, I've got some more work for them! The plumber did a decent job over all, but did not know how to install the tub/shower faucet. For real. He must have done his homework between his first and second visit because he did get it installed.
