"NO WORK WAS PERFORMED. This customer signed a contract to complete a basement remodel, then wanted to cancel it. These contracts are supposed to be guaranteed, and my company and employees count on these contracts to run the business. Otherwise, wouldn’t we all be doing business on just a handshake? Contracts are to protect BOTH parties. Weeks after they signed, they changed their mind, and requested a refund. I informed them I had spent hours drawing their basement plan, preparing the estimate, and spending on advertising, insurance, etc. I offered to complete other services equal to their deposit. They accepted, and had me measure and design an art table. I spent hours designing, and revising drawings. After we had agreed to this project, the customer expected it to be built immediately with no regard to existing projects in the shop. Sensing frustration, I offered a partial refund of 50% of their deposit, and the customer agreed. I drafted a release letter voiding the agreement, and the remaining balance. This letter was dated 10/24/19. I asked the customer to sign the release, and I would immediately provide the deposit refund. The customer refused. We had an agreement, yet they were unwilling to sign a one-page release. To date, no release document has been signed. The customer hired an attorney which I spoke with 3 times in an attempt to resolve issues. After discussing the situation with him,he offered a similar release letter that he asked me to sign, and issue a 50% refund. The letter he provided was full of legal jargon and confusing. I believe my release is clear, concise, protects both parties, and completely voids the remaining balance. My offer presented in October of last year has not changed. My company has done absolutely nothing wrong. We provided an estimate, project drawings, and a complete proposal. Both parties agreed to all the terms in good faith. This “F” rating is the result of a customer changing their mind, and trying to back out of a legal obligation."
