The water heater install was a disaster. He did buy the heater we selected but after that it was down hill. He assured us that he would have it installed by someone qualified to enforce the warranty. He Lied. He didn't get the right parts to install it. They did remove the old water heater OK. The plumber didn't have the right tools or parts because he thought John was going to have everything there. So he was frustrated starting. Of course they had taken out the old one so we didn't have any hot water and he said he didn't want to leave us without hot water, but he should have. We needed to have a hole drilled through the foundation to vent the water heater. He didn't inform us or make any attempt to contain the mess he was about to make. My grandson who was visiting that weekend, came running out of the house saying, "Grandma, the whole basement is filled with red smoke" . Everything (and its a full basement that is full of storage and stuff) was covered with the red brick dust and all along the wall chunks of brick and stone. He went to our small town local hardware store and got parts that got us hot water but didn't meet the specs and didn't install it using the rings that would have made the hole look better. There's a sheet of paper on the outside that tells you exactly what should be done with the install. NOT DONE. He left it messy with old pipes capped off and the new lines coming off from pipes a foot or more away from the wall. We have not hired someone to clean it up, but are planning to do so this spring. (Again having to pay twice for the same thing) He did install the sun-setter but didn't finish it, so its starting to come apart. He did put up the rails with the new supports he said we needed that I bought, but they put the sleeves on upside down and drilled new holes in them so that now there are ugly holes showing. We talked about everything we wanted before we started and still every time we questioned what he was doing or not doing he acted surprised. We talked about already having some bad experiences and he seemed so sincere about doing a good job and doing it right, but again we feel taken. We both feel like we should have fired him but neither knew how we would ever get it finished if we did. We definitely should not have paid him as much as we did. We only held back $200 on his promise that he would get the water heater installed properly. Why we believed him at that point I don't know, but also just wanted him gone. He's an excellent salesman but NOT a good contractor. Later Mr. Wittekinds called us to let us know about a good price on a gas unit to solve one problem with heating a particular room and eventually helped install it. It is an old house, with the fragile slate room common in the region so we've never gotten the chimneys cleaned and repaired as I believe they need. We plan to call Wittenkinds again when the roof is under repair and the chimneys are more accessible for thorough inspection, cleaning and repair. I am very happy with the look of it. The whole crew, from the owner to the work crew was very nice and friendly. I used them because of recommendations from this website. I feel secure in that they warranty their work and will call them again the next time I have a need for a contractor. A very professional and reputable company. Highly recommend.
UPDATE:January 2013 Starting around late November we noticed the wall wet where the chimney is. I called Dave in December and told him what was going on and nothing happened. So I called him again after Christmas as the wall was getting worse. I got him and his son to come out and look at the inside of the house and they went out and looked at the roof from the ground. They said it was probably the chimney leaking between the bricks and probably had nothing to do with the roof but that they would check the vent cap and put new caulking around the flashing where it met the chimney and put sealant on the chimney. I noticed one day that there was ice built up around the flashing on the chimney and sent an email of my findings to pro co's email listed on their website on the 5th and another to their Facebook email on the 10th. Here it is mid January and I still have not had any repairs made nor have I heard from anyone as to when this might happen. I called a chimney repair company on Friday the 11th and they came and looked at the chimney from the outside on the 14th and called me that night and told me that the flashing was the problem. I asked how they were certain of this and they said that they could stick their hand between the flashing and the chimney! They are coming on the 17th to fix the flashing. It is very aggravating when someone says their going to do something and then not do it. I understand things come up like illness, family emergencies, etc. but would a phone call or email or text with an update on the when the repairs will be made be too much to ask? I guess so and now I am forced to pay someone else to make to repairs to a one year old roof. "Used a shop vac to sweep what they did get out, leaving a coat of dust on everything in our living room. Used 1 sponge they wet once to clean. We were quoted $75, with multiple discussions on what they could do. Explained all the $75 was for inspection and sweep from the top of chimney, which we had removed last year. $600 for a deep cleaning and then tried to charge $1200. If this was a deep cleaning, I ll eat my hat. We signed contract with no amount on it."

Chimney Sweep questions, answered by experts
Even though you don’t look at your roof often, there are some telltale signs that you should have your roof professionally cleaned. It’s best to hire a professional roof cleaner as soon as you notice signs of wear and tear to preserve the essential feature’s longevity.
Some indicators to look out for include:
Long-handled telescopic brushes are the best way to clean the outside of a house without a pressure washer. There are even special attachments for cleaning the outside of windows. Use a gentle cleaning solution for both the roof and siding to avoid harming the finishes. Be sure to rinse the area thoroughly with a garden hose after scrubbing.
Regular cleaning, promptly repairing minor issues, ensuring proper drainage, and using rust-resistant coatings help prevent recurring damage.
Generally, snow removal from a roof should occur once over six inches of snow accumulates, especially if you notice that ice dams have formed. Without ice dams, you can let the snow accumulation hit 12 inches before removing it. However, the amount of snow that is too much for your roof also depends on the sturdiness of your roof and the compactness of the snow. If your roof needs maintenance or has structural issues, it’s best not to let the snow accumulate too much for fear of collapsing.
If you’re asking yourself, should you pressure wash your roof, the answer almost always is no. The water pressure that the power washing machine generates could damage the shingles by forcing water underneath or causing them to loosen. Soft washing with a pump sprayer is the better and safer option.
