I needed to refinish my existing prefinished wood floors from the 90s and decided to tear out the carpets and install all hardwood at the same time. John and his crew were incredible every step of the way. They laced in the new flooring with the old perfectly and it's impossible to tell that the floors weren't all installed at the same time. The pricing was competitive, they completed the job right on schedule, the crew was clean and respectful of my home, and the finished product is absolutely stunning.

The crew from Gerwitz did an *excellent* job refinishing the 100-year-old floors in my home office. I cannot stress enough how fantastic this floor looks. The guys were courteous, efficient, professional, and cleaned up my home when the job was done. Would recommend this company to anyone, especially those with older homes with high quality old flooring.

I am thrilled with the product and the experience. John and his team - Chris (!) Tony/Jim - were a pleasure. It took me a long time to pull the trigger and make the decision to get it done and I am happy I did it.

Well, but old floor spaces between boards were not clean well or filled in.

Completed the job in two steps. Living room, kitchen, dining area and hallway in step one. And the three bedrooms in step two. I found Gerwitz to be very professional and did an excellent job finishing new flooring I had interweaved with old flooring 60 years old.

We used Gerwitz before to install hardwood in our former home and were very happy. We recently purchased a new home that had a lot of carpet. We hate carpet, so we hired Gerwitz again to remove it and install hardwood. Again, we couldn't be happier with our floors. He matched the new hardwood to the old perfectly and the new floors are just beautiful. They cleaned up very well after completing the work so that there really wasn't any dust for me to deal with after we moved in. He adds nice details like hardwood floor vents that you wouldn't think of on your own that make a huge difference in how the floor looks. I don't know how he compares on price because we don't consider anyone else but I think the cost was fair for the amount of work done. I would highly recommend Gerwitz.

Working with John and his crew was a great experience! I got five quotes and his exactly the same as three others, and less than one. We went with him because he had been recommended by a mutual associate. We needed him to do our floors on a specific weekend while we were out of town, and he was able to accommodate us. They showed up on time, both times they were scheduled (once for quote, once to do a sample patch for color choice.) Tim (who came for color sample) was very nice despite me asking him to put six different colors on the floor for me to choose from. We left on a Wednesday at noon, they began the job Wednesday afternoon and John emailed me on Friday to thank me for letting them do the job (they had access to our home while we were out of town, so they are very trustworthy as well!) We returned on Sunday to a beautifully done job--the floors look amazing! One extra thing to note--while cleaning the bathroom, I noticed one tiny area behind our pedestal sink that had been missed. I contacted John, and he came by the next morning to touch up the spot--no questions asked and was very apologetic. We received excellent service from Gerwitz Floors and would use them again without question, and I would highly recommend them to anyone!! Great job, guys!

They do an excellent job refinishing wood floors. Their pricing has always seemed reasonable. Once they start a job, they can usually wrap it up in about 2 days.

Left house with all indications that he would be providing the contracted services. No response to repeated phone calls and email. Both my contractor and myself were surprised by the lack of response. Received email quote nearly one week later. This took longer than I expected, but the price is reasonable and this company came highly recommended. I called and emailed back that I would like them to complete project in originally discussed time frame.
On the promised start date, John called to confirm the crew was enroute. He apologized for not confirming sooner, but explained that things were very busy. Work was accomplished over two days. I was not entirely satisfied with work and John personally came to complete job. I am very satisfied with price and final product, floors look and feel fantastic.
My only complaint in this entire process was the lack of communication. It can be stressful when you are dealing with timelines and coordinating multiple contractors. I was very happy with the crew, quality and price.
I will be using Gerwitz again.

It was excellent, the crew was professional, clean and prompt. They were very patient with me because I was unsure of the stain color that I wanted. They showed me several colors and was very helpful in describing what the final product would look like. My floors are beautiful. The price was excellent for the amount of work that was done.

They worked the weekend prior to our move-in to make sure everything was in order. Just as a nicety, he sanded the old butcher block island, giving it a fresh clean look and feel. Honest, hard working, and a nice guy doing beautiful work.

This group did a fantastic job. All of the staff were professional, considerate and knowledgeable. Jordan was a master at helping us find just the right color stain, ending up actually mixing stains to get it to just where we wanted it.

Our floors look spectacular. They look more brilliant than we would ever have guessed. They did half of the job in four days - the Tung Oil needs three applications and they'll finish the job in four days, again because of the application of the Tung oil. We paid for half of the job at this time. We had to wait for a week to start the other half of the floors because the floors needed some time to dry before we moved the furniture over to the finished side.
The workers put up plastic sheets to try to keep the dust to a minimum. Everyone was very courteous.
These folks are very skilled. They are prompt and work very hard. We've done this work ourselves, so we know what it takes to do a good job.
We thought the price for the scope of the work was very reasonable. We would recommend their work.
They came in under budget.

This job was rescheduled from January 2013. My original appt. was cancelled because some of Mr. Gerwitz's crew was out with the flu. This company is based on the west side of Cleveland and I am an Eastsider. I was really thankful they came out to do this small job for me. I will definitely use them for any work I need done in the future as well as recommend them to all of my east side and west side friends.

John was recommended to us by several friends in our neighborhood. We obtained several quotes and John's price was the best. He helped us work through figuring out what we wanted -- testing some stains on the existing oak floors, bringing in several samples of cherry floor boards with different finishes so we could be sure of what we wanted. He took us to one of his suppliers so we could look at different types of wood. We settled on character cherry -- real cherry hardwoods that have natural variations in grain, color, with some knots here and there. We scheduled the job and things went exactly as planned.
First, John and his team delivered the wood so that it could stay in our house for a week to acclimate. He made sure that the wood was secure and safe, because we have two young girls in the house. Then, after a week, John did the floors from start to finish in our family room. This accomplished several things -- we were able to get an idea of the stain color and finish before he did the entire job. Also, we were able to move our furniture into our family room and live there while the rest of the rooms were being redone. He moved the refrigerator, etc, so we could continue to use it. Then, he installed and finished the rest of the floors. When we tried a slightly glossier finish in the new areas, he was able to add another coat to the family room so everything matched.
Several things surprised me -- the whole process was so easy! We were able to stay in our house the whole time and walk on the floors every night. This was especially nice because our kids are in school and staying somewhere else would have been a huge pain. I was also amazed at how fast things went. On the first day, John and his crew completely removed the family room carpeting and installed the hardwoods. In one day! He then went on to stain and finish the floors, and was done with the family room -- 450 square feet -- in about three days. I was also surprised at how clean a process it was. I had heard horror stories about how dusty things can get when the floors are sanded. But it wasn't that bad, because John and his crew used machines with attached vacuums so the dust didn't have time to scatter. I was also surprised by how hands-son John was. Character cherry, with all it's variations, needs some careful arranging of boards so that the patterns look right. Even though John had several jobs going at once, he was always there to make sure that things were done correctly.
John was a pleasure to work with. He was kind, funny, helpful, and completely unflappable when we wanted to test different ideas. His crew was wonderful -- they were on time, pleasant to work with, and did a great job. They were careful with our children and our cats. The whole process was not disruptive at all!
In the end, we have beautiful new floors in our home that are truly a work of art. Friends who have come by to see them literally stop and gasp when they walk in the front door. The floors extend throughout every room on the first floor seamlessly. Our home is truly transformed, and we couldn't be happier. I would absolutely recommend John Gerwitz to anyone!

Very well. In addition to this job, John has refinished every floor in our home. He also refinished floors in our first home. We have recommended John to family and friends. You can't go wrong with Gerwitz Wood Floor refinishing!!

John Gerwitz came out to give me an estimate, which was very quick and to the point. He measured the room sizes and assessed the condition of the floors and wrote up an estimate on the spot. When I called to schedule the job, I was able to get it scheduled within 2 weeks and when I had to call and reschedule due to a roofing job conflict, he was flexible in rescheduling the floor job. His laborers came out on the scheduled day and removed the carpeting, sanded, and painted several stain samples on the bare floor so I could choose a color. When I was not happy with any of the samples that were on the floor, they came out the next morning and custom-mixed several other choices until I found one that I loved immediately. The color looked great and coordinated with several other areas of wood trim and built-ins in my 84-year-old home. What was interesting was that when the same color was applied in the rooms that did not have carpeting, they looked richer than the living room, and a few boards soaked up way too much of the red color in the stain. John actually contacted ME about it before I even saw it and said he felt the living room needed to be redone and offered to have his team move the furniture back out of the living room as everything had been moved over when the work on the other rooms had begun. I was impressed that he didn't wait for me to complain and that he offered to do extra work to get the color just right. In the end, it made a HUGE difference to get my old hardwood floors refinished - I was really impressed with the discoloration that they were able to remove by sanding and with the smoothness/color/overall appearance and quality of the work. My floors look like new!
A few items to be sure you ask and are aware of:
1. Ask about the cost to pull up/remove carpeting as this was not provided in the original estimate. You have to ask a lot of questions to be sure you're covered! It ended up not being an issue for me, but just wanted to note it.
2. If you have large gaps in your floorboards (even ones you didn't know about under carpeting), these will be left as is. There may be something the company can do, but I honestly didn't ask and they didn't mention any options, either. It doesn't bother me much because it's an old home and I think that it's a natural part of an aging home, but if it's something that would bother you ask if there are any options.
3. The polyurethane they use is not a high-gloss finish, it's a satin finish. I can definitely say it is a beautiful finish and I have received so many compliments!
4. If you are getting stairs refinished, the estimate says and quot;TREADS ONLYand quot; which means if there is carpet glue or if there are unattractive stair risers, you will have to figure out what to do with them yourself. There is quite a bit of glue left on some of my risers and I've been so busy that I haven't figured out what to do with them (as I'm not a fan of the white riser/stained tread look). I may actually call other companies and see if they can do the risers for me! Again, this information is shown right on the estimate but it's one thing to see it on paper and another to see it as you walk up the staircase.

The floors look beautiful! I have received so many compliments! They were neat, prompt and completed the job in a timely manner. I have used Gerwitz in the past and had a great experience in the past. He works around your schedule in the evening or weekends to provide a quote. In addition, he adjusted his schedule to complete the job. I would highly recommend!
