As it turns out, I was prescient in my worries as all the areas I was concerned about needed redoing within a couple of years. I 'phoned Detroit Shoreway Renovation towards the end of the two-year warranty they provided, and was told that they were fully booked up for the remainder of that painting season, and that they would come out the following year, which was fine by me as it meant another six months for paint problems to emerge. I contacted Detroit Shoreway in spring, and left a message asking them to call back to schedule the touch-up. When I hadn't heard back from them within a couple of months, I re-called, and finally spoke to someone. The painters came out in the early summer to touch up the paint, doing a proficient job everywhere except for two spots where they failed to apply the top coat, which they and I missed.
I would definitely use Detroit Shoreway again.
The entire house ended up needing two coats of primer to do the job right. They did the second coat no charge, so we only paid for materials.
Per code in Lakewood because of lead paint and because you don't want moisture trapped beneath the new paint (it bubbles and peels apparently), they hand washed the house instead of power washing. About half of the companies we had come out power washed and were immediately eliminated. They even came back after a year on their own to see if we needed any touch ups... we didn't because they were so thorough the first time through. It's been two years and we're still very happy with the job.
They helped with color choices and happily gave answers to any questions we had... the friendly and personal touch we were hoping for.
They weren't the very most expensive quote, but they were close. There are some things that are worth paying for... a paint job that looks good and will last a long time instead of needing repainting in 3 years is one of them.
Our next door neighbor, who is just as particular as we are, used them as well because she was so impressed with their attention to detail, speed and cleanliness. She then recommended them to an aunt who was also very pleased... especially when they ethically charged her less than they quoted because the job was easier than anticipated.
In all, this is a company to hire.
They re-glazed the windows, so it wasn't painting of the exterior of the house per se. I have used them a couple of times. Theirs was definitely one of the more pricey quotes that I had. They do a quality job and they definitely want the customer to be happy. Even though I had a little bit of issue with the quality of the work, they took my complaints seriously. They came back out and rectified any issues that I had. That's probably why I have kept using them. They are definitely expensive. If we are to break it down into man hours they are just astronomically expensive. I felt like they really rushed through the job. When I called and pointed out some of the areas that I thought they needed to redo, they did it. It's just that I would want somebody to come out and do it right the first time, so that I wouldn’t have to call them back. That's the bottom line for me. I have a Spanish revival house with old original windows. It's very difficult to find people who do the work. Even though they are very expensive, I would probably continue to use them just because it's hard to find people that know how to do the work.
