On the positive side, the price was reasonable and the ring was ready when promised. It was sized properly (if anything it's a hair larger than I actually need but it stays on just fine). And it was polished beautifully. As I left the store on November 5, I didn't realize that a key design element of the ring was gone...
Later that afternoon, I realized that the milgrain edging along both edges of the ring had been polished almost completely off. You can still see where the edging originally was (at least along one edge) but for all intents and purposes it's gone.
I contacted the store (as I was at an airport headed out of town for a week), letting them know all this and asking them if they could restore the milgrain edging. Their first response was, "it was pretty worn when you brought it in" but they'd take a look at it. I replied assuring them that I knew the ring had "some mileage" on it (as I've been married 27 years) but that I remembered the milgrain edging at least 80-90% in tact. They promised to take a look and see what could be done when I returned to Cleveland a week later.
I stopped by today to see what could be done to restore this edging. The jeweler was very hesitant to do anything. He offered to re-etch the lines where the milgrain beads used to be but made it clear that it wouldn't be the same... And he was worried that after he invested that effort that I wouldn't like it or something else... It was evidently clear from his hesitation and resistance that he would not restore the ring to its original condition.
When splicing a piece into a ring, I fully understand that the beaded edging would be damaged at that splice location. I also recognize that after 27 years of marriage, the ring had some scuffs and signs of wear. But there's no way in the world that normal wear and tear had polished off two different beaded edges completely. Furthermore, he took a digital photo of my ring when I dropped it off. He should know exactly where it was worn and where it was not worn.
I was expecting an absolute "we'll make it right" attitude, based on other Angie's List reviews. I got nothing like that. I wasted my time.
Now the single most important piece of jewelry I have is changed forever. Shiny and looking new, but missing the whole design element that was the reason my wife and I chose that ring 27 years ago.
At a bare minimum, the jeweler should refund my money completely.
I won't ever go back.
"In response to our recent review on gents wedding band sizing. We-I Pride ourselves in doing the best we can. In reference to the work done on the wedding band my polisher did do a good polishing job removing the scratches through the middle of the ring but it did compromise the milgrain edging. What I tried to explain is that the edging was applied by a factory which can not be replicated with a milgrain tool at the bench. My honest feeling was to leave things alone because there was some milgraining. The customer already felt we compromised the look of his ring and by doing a hand milgrain would of changed the look of his band. The shop in me says sometimes it is better to leave things alone especially when it's on a very sentimental ring. Sorry for disappointing. Sincerely, Jeff Broestl"
