This was the single worst experience I have encountered in any of the five states I have owned properties. Run away, don't walk, as fast as you can from Clarke Contractors and the most inept project manager (Peter Chadwick) that I have ever had the misfortune to meet.
Clarke was hired to repair water damage and replace nine large windows. Every, and I mean every, item that they purported to repair has had to been reworked by another contractor. Their drywall work cracked, peeled and separated in every room they worked in. They painted my wall (sand finish) with metallic paint. They damaged the crown molding. They destroyed two mature bushes in the front of the house while replacing the windows. In those areas where the paint color was correct, they pained the light fixtures, the hinges, the solid brass door handles and the floor. They attempted to charge for work not completed and literarily every measurement they took was extended and inflated in price, they are the most corrupt and fraudulent firm I have ever encountered.
In addition, they chose not to stand behind any of their work and Peter (the inept project manager) refused to honor their contractual 1-year warranty.
If you choose to use the company you do so at your own peril; Caveat emptor..
I had called numerous home improvement companies, window companies, roofing companies, etc. and could not find anyone who would tackle this job. I wanted to add a window to a living room wall because the room was so dark. I saw several Clarke Contractor trucks in a parking lot and saw that they restore damaged homes. I called to see if they would install a window in a brick wall and they said, "Yes, no problem." I already had the window ($500) so their estimate was for the labor to cut the hole in the brick, frame the window and header, install the window, finish the brick work on the outside, and add new wallboard on the inside. (I did the touch up painting and I prepared the space with drop cloths, plastic covers, etc. to save a little money.)
From the estimate to the completion this was a very professional and problem free job. The estimate was very detailed - no room for misunderstandings. Even though they are very busy, Steve was very prompt on responses to my questions.
A project manager was assigned (Mike) who stayed in constant contact with me and made sure everyone showed up when they were supposed to and made sure I was informed each step of the way. The carpenter they sent to do the work (John) was a perfectionist just like me, and did an excellent job of framing the window, putting in the header, as well as, measuring precisely where the hole needed to be cut in the wall so that it was even with other windows on the back side of the home.
Clarke Contractors took care of getting the building permit and being present during inspections so I didn't have to do that.
Part of the job (masonry brick work) had to be contracted out to another company. That company also sent a project manager to oversee the outside brick work, however, when the brick layers showed up they were not clear exactly where to cut the hole. Good thing I was there to catch it and have them call and check in with the Clarke carpenter. Once that was resolved, the rest of the job was done flawlessly. It was a VERY messy job cutting through bricks (dust storm) but they cleaned up the deck and outside furniture afterwards.
They even went the extra mile and replaced some bricks under another window to repair a crack that had formed in the outside wall.
After the hole was cut in the brick, the carpenter, John, installed the window and window sill and from the inside, it looked like it had always been there. Then he did the finish work on the outside to ensure everything matched the other windows. The window looks and functions great.
This was the easiest home improvement project that I have ever experienced thanks to Clarke Contractors. Yes, I needed to be present to catch a few things but, all in all, my part was so minimal and the project was done so well and fast (7 days total) that I would totally trust them to do any home improvement project.
We had used them a couple of years ago when our refrigerator ice maker stuck on and flooded the kitchen and basement below it. They did an excellent job then too.
The only negative was the cost, but I presume that all such services are similar in price.
