Shawn didn't bother showing up until 930am. The demolition had begun and was well underway without him. At 11am Shawn came in to tell me he was leaving. !!!! The demolition crews were still here. My general contractor should be here for the entire subcontracting job. I hired him because I don't know about this stuff and don't want to get taken advantage of. He also did not preschedule a concrete pour for the new foundation. He is unable to think two steps ahead. We can have bids for concrete and pick a new subcontractor to pour the floor before the old garage is removed.
Not a good general contractor, not a good planner.
Two weeks into the job, I asked Shawn for the building approval paperwork and he looked dumbfounded. He said we didn't need approvals from the city to build walls in the basement. When I informed him we did, he argued with me. That was over 12 weeks ago. Shawn has submitted one set of plans to the city for approval that were rejected. At that point in time he quit mentally. Every week my husband and I would ask about the status of the plans, and he was always "working" on them. He measured the bathroom wrong- it took over an hour and a half for him to remeasure, and since Shawn only shows up for work an average of 2-3 days a week for 2-3 hours a day, that was a huge percent of his work day. Finally after 13 weeks, Shawn submitted the plans on a Monday and told us we would have approval or denial by Friday. I called a week later, and was told that the city specifically told Shawn (the person I spoke with remembered him distinctly) that it would take a month for review.
Shawn refused to show me receipts, stating that my husband had seen them.
Shawn refused to get contractors here until the plans were approved- but since he wasn't finishing the drawing of the plans...
Shawn was getting $30/hr plus 20% of the contracted out work. I expected him to be here when contractors were in house, which he rarely was. I had contractors showing up at my front door asking where he was since he was the contact point for everything, and stating they couldn't get a hold of him. He signed up the job of General Contractor, but didn't want the responsibility.
Shawn had keys to our house. He witnessed me leave one day - I always left the door unlocked for him so he could enter the basement and retrieve his belongings - Shawn left and left the house unlocked. I came home to plumbers who had let themselves in and started working. Should the plumbers have let themselves in? No. Should Shawn have double checked he left the house secured? Yes.
Shawn would repeatedly go to my husband for money for "supplies" but in the same breath would mention that his rotten tooth needed pulled, or his wife's car had been towed or his van needed an engine. Once my husband refused to write a check for $250 for "supplies" Shawn pouted and told him to swing by Home Depot and pick up the supplies from now on.
My examples could go on and on. Needless to say, you have been warned.
