"The customer started this job himself from the beginning, then decided to have someone else do it. That is when he hired my company by signing my contract estimate for us to do the work. At that time, I already gave him a $200 discount on the work to be completed. My normal crew and a subcontractor both worked on this job. The customer was aware of the subcontractor involved and physically saw him on the job. The customer was not home when my crew and I were on the jobsite working. He was not aware of the work we did in terms of prep work that was involved, digging it out and laying the base. There was already yard damage prior to us getting there and starting the job. Fixing the yard was not part of my estimate, and the customer was aware of this. In terms of this additional work (the extra $550 the customer is referring to), the customer told me on the phone to do whatever it takes to finish the lawn. He wanted us to fix it, again, this additional work was above the original price, but the customer wanted it done. After the work was completed, my wife emailed the customer the invoice and asked that someone respond to our email to confirm receipt of the invoice. We received no response to that email. I had cell phone numbers both for the customer and his wife. I called both of those cell phone numbers and left messages. I also texted both numbers. I attempted to contact both of them for 4 days after the work was completed. Again, I never heard back from either one to verify that the invoice was even received. No one returned my voicemail messages, no one responded to the text messages, and no one responded to the emails. Again, I had not been paid yet for the work. As a business owner, I get nervous when I finish a job and the customer does not respond in terms of payment. In this case, I had done everything possible to contact the customer. After 4 days of no response from them, I drove to their house where the work was completed, and knocked on the door. The customer was not happy that I showed up at his house. I explained that I had tried contacting them for several days. He informed me that his wife did get my text, but I did not know this as she did not respond to me. I further explained that I had no idea that they received any messages, texts, or emails because they did not let me know that. Then he started questioning the $550 that was added to the original estimate for the additional work that he told me to do. I reminded him what that charge was for. He was very angry throughout this whole conversation. Finally, he went inside to get a check. When he came back out, he gave me the check and told me to get the “* _ _ _” off of his property. I left immediately."
I happened to be home when a crew of 4 or 5 guys came to start the job. Let me tell you I was impressed with the way this crew worked. They were professional, worked very hard, and did a great job. The drainage issue has been remedied, and the walkway looks great, and also allows me to use my laundry room as sort of a mud room. My only beef was with the pavers that went on the sidewalk. They were set about 1/2" higher than the sidewalk. Dave explained that it was for "settling". I'm okay with that, but the sidewalk has a gentle slope to drain away from the house and deck, and the pavers were set level (I checked them myself with a level). I would think that common sense would say to slope the pavers the same as the sidewalk (and set up 1/2"). I guess I can live with the way they were installed, especially now that there is a fence gate installed right at the pad. But I was told Dave my concern about the slope, he completely ignored me.
All in all, the work was done extremely well, but ignoring a good customer's question does not sit well with me. BHW is does not do work for cheap, so answering a valid question/concern should not be above them. I am having a difficult time giving them a "B" for this job, but I feel like I have to say something. It should be an A- if anything.
Because they wanted to do it on a day that I was not ready for them, I informed them they would empty shed and put everything back in once it was moved. I supplied casters to move it. when it came time to put everything back in theyput all my winter equipment in the back and piled everything in the way.
I also had conduits run under drive for electric. When they landscaped they were suppose to leave the pipes clear. OOPS they just put large rocks on them to mark where they were. Other than that the landscape work looks good It took them 4 hours to do all the work.
I have not gotten into the shed due to the weather since th moveOn Monday, August 11th, tearout began of the old patio. The crew was punctual and worked hard all day. That evening we received torrential rains (2-3" overnight). The crew was onsite Tuesday, August 12th, and began work.
Although we told the crew foreman that we'd prefer if they placed sheets of plywood down as to not destroy our yard and driveway, the crew continued to work unabated. This resulted in complete destruction of the turf of our back yard as well as driveway. I've got picture proof of 3' deep ruts caused by the excavator.
We contacted Dave immediately and made him aware of the issue. He replied this would be fixed.
Upon completion of the patio job on Friday, August 15th, the work crew asked where they could get topsoil close. We suggested driving a mile up the road to a supply store, but they scoffed at the price of $28/yard. Rather, they left a crew of 3 sitting at my house and drove 40 minutes away to get a load of unscreened, wet, clay filled topsoil for just $13/yard.
Dave was notified that the soil they returned with was so clay filled the workers couldn't break up all of the clumps. We received no reply.
We paid the final bill - which was nearly $500 over estimate.
Fast forward a month: While we're happy with the patio, there is a section of yard about 10'x15' that is so hard and compact grass will not grow. There are balls of clay the size of softballs and it's difficult to even get the mower across them.
We send BHW an email detailing our concerns, advising of the fact that we had made them aware of this originally, and received a reply 2 days later that for "$75" the "cost of materials and gas" they would come and remedy the problem.
After posting screenshots of the email chain on my personal Facebook to voice my concerns, a follow up email from the company stated they'd "fix the problem free of charge" if I were to "remove my negative comments" from my personal Facebook page.
While the work on the patio appears to be done well, I seriously question the integrity of a company that 1) is not responsive to initial consumer concerns, 2) bills over the estimate and claims "they didn't know what they were getting into" even though Dave estimated the job himself, 3) offers to fix a problem of their creation for an additional fee, and 4) tries to blackmail it's customers from leaving sub-par reviews. We will not be using them again.
"Thank you for providing us feedback on our work. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know you were satisfied with the job. Thank you for your business and please let us know if you ever need anything else in the future. Take care -"
