We ordered an expensive Shaw carpet for our family room. Tondo's salespeople never mentioned any need for any special padding for this carpet at any time. Tondo's owner, himself, measured our rectangle room and remarked at that time what an easy job this would be. The room is a rectangle with only a fireplace...no stairs, closet, etc. for any difficult installations. The carpet was ordered, and installation was scheduled three weeks later. The installers were on time for the job. However, the carpet was not measured correctly. The installers attempted to blame Shaw for not sending the correct amount of carpet. After waiting patiently for three weeks for the carpet to be installed, we were now told we would need to wait longer for an additional piece. I contacted Tondo's because I was concerned about the color/dye variation in the new piece versus the current carpet. Mr. Tondo was very short with me and just stated, "We do this for a living. Shaw assured us this is from the same roll." Really? A company that serves the entire United States still has the same roll from my order? I let this go, but then I had to contact Tondo's again when I saw the patch job the installers did on my padding. I made the mistake of not watching the installers, so I did not catch the nightmare of a job they did on the padding. There were pieces stapled down everywhere. Various pieces looked like floor vents were cut out and patched, and I don't have floor vents. There was not one continuous piece of padding in my large family room; it looked life a jigsaw puzzle. I again called Tondo's and spoke to the owner's son this time. He said that I was being difficult and asked me if I wanted out of the contract. He informed me that I was already getting a few free yards of expensive carpet. I told him that it was not my fault the carpet was mis-measured; I would have gladly paid to have carpet installed correctly. He then said they would have to check with the installers. He did; and he claimed the installers said that the end pieces were pieced due to the size. No, I said that I have chunks cut and pieced everywhere. I asked them again to come out to see it for themselves (I only live 10 minutes away from them). They refused. I sent them pictures. They then said they would change the padding after receiving the pictures. I then contacted Tondo's again to ask that the padding that was currently there be removed properly (staples removed from the floor, swept, etc.). However, I did not ever get this request out. I was put on speaker phone to speak with the owner and his son together. The owner just talked over me. Although he admitted that he measured incorrectly, he stated that I was just being a difficult customer. I told him that I showed the photos of the padding to people, and everyone I showed said that padding should not look like that. He said, "Did you show people who do this for a living? There is nothing wrong with the padding, but we told you that we would replace it." He said, "You obviously don't trust us, so you need to cancel this contract." This was not the first time they mentioned cancelling the contract; I cancelled this time. They did promptly refund my money. I lost 3 weeks to them, and more time ordering and scheduling with a reliable seller and installer. I purchased the same carpet from a Shaw dealer in Austintown. I showed this dealer the photos of the carpet padding. I did not tell him who did the installation. He told me that the padding was not the correct padding for a softbac carpet. He said that carpet should only be sold with a spillguard pad. He said the stapled up holes all over the padding likely occurred when the installer attempted to slide this carpet across that padding. The carpet would not slide on that padding and likely tore it. He also said that he would like to sell the staples to whoever installed my padding because he could make more money on the staples than the carpet, if that tells you anything. Why do I believe him? Because we hired a flooring contractor to install the carpet from Greenville, PA who is not associated with this dealer. The contractor said the same thing when he measured our room and saw the pictures. He also said that the we were fortunate that the carpet was measured incorrectly. He said the padding they used would have bunched under the carpet, and our expensive carpet would have worn and buckled and needed replaced in no time. Note: Tondo's measured our room at 32.33 sq. ft., our flooring contractor measured it at 36 sq. ft. So, there are two flooring professionals who told me that the padding was not only not installed correctly, but also not even the correct padding for the carpet I purchased. If you go with Tondo's, just watch the entire installation. We got "lucky" that our carpet was measured incorrectly; otherwise, we would have never known what they "swept under the rug" until it was too late.
