The technician arrived and diagnosed the faulty run capacitor within about 10 minutes. An estimate was provided to my wife who, not knowing a great deal about AC repair, agreed and had the service performed. The estimate was $78 for the service call, and $222 for the capacitor.
We later found out this is an astronomical amount for a capacitor replacement, and an amount so high we were urged by some AC consultants online to file a complaint with the BBB. This is an action we have not, to-date, taken. Doing a bit of research, I found that the exact part that was installed using its manufacturer's part number. The list price on this part directly from the manufacturer in single-unit quantity is $10.57 each. At this point, I assume there must have been a mistake.
After a few calls, I'm finally able to talk with Jim Gray, the owner. He claimed the reason the price was so high was because the industry moved to fixed-price service, and that if I were to call around I'd find he was within 10-15% of the other contractors in the area. That said, he did note that it appeared the technician overcharged for the capacitor by $30, for which he promptly mailed a check.
Curious, I took his advice and called around to 6 other AC service shops in the area recommended here on Angie's List. 2 wouldn't give prices over the phone, but of the 4 that would, the highest estimate was $165. That estimate included an additional $50 service fee due to the distance of my house from their main location. None of the four places I talked to charged more than $30 for the part. None had a fixed-price schedule for AC repairs. Clearly, I overpaid by at least $100, and Jim was obviously wrong in saying he'd be within 10-15% of the competition. I called and left a message for Jim to bring this to his attention, but never got a response.
I would caution anyone thinking of using Tri State Heating and Cooling to be extremely careful, and would strongly recommend you seek service elsewhere. As in my case, their fixed-price format may mean you'll significantly overpay for repairs: like $190 for a part for which other services in the area charge no more than $30.
