The first thing my husband noticed was that the guy was wearing loafers. How do you climb on a roof in loafers? Well, he didn't.
The first thing out of his mouth was that he was '"saving us a lot of money by coming out himself, instead of sending a crew out."Then he told my husband he had already walked around the house before he knocked on the door (which is rude and kind of creepy). He then walked around with my husband and said we had a cheap roof which was improperly installed and that the staining was because the shingles were deteriorating.
Then he took my husband across the street, telling him he needed to get the right angle. When he was happy with the angle, he said "see, the shingles are lifting up, the roof is shot." He said we would need the roof and gutters replaced and he'd send someone out to give us an estimate.
What!?! We were 12 years into a high quality, 30-year dimensional shingle, which at the 'right angle' does sometimes cast shadows that make the roof look wavy. So after the guy left, my husband climbed up on the roof and found NO LIFTING SHINGLES. He couldn't even get a fingernail under the edges of the shingles.
This roof was installed by an old school c*** of my husband's who has since retired from his 30-year old, very successful roofing company in an upscale part of the city. The roof had not been improperly installed--indeed, they had actually added vents and an attic fan during the last install to ensure better ventilation. We called our friend to make sure the shingles hadn't been recalled. He looked them up and said no recalls and told us that those shingles have never been a problem. He felt there was no way the roof was at the end of its life.
So we decided to find another company, but seven days later a freak hailstorm destroyed thousands of roofs, siding and gutters throughout the area, including ours and all our neighbors. We hired one of the companies that came knocking on our door because they were already on our list to call, based on their excellent Angie's List rating plus the fact they were local, family owned for 30 years. The guy that came out was very polite and knowledgeable. He climbed up on the roof and took many photos. When I asked the fellow if the roof had been 'shot' prior to the hail damage or if it was improperly installed, he said absolutely not and showed us in the photos they took how the roof was fine except for the large dents from the hail, and he explained that the staining was from algae and fungus, not roof deterioration.
We did tell the woman who later called from Mr. Roof about our bad experience. Maybe that and this post will protect others from wasting their money in the future.
"I have a hard time finding that this posting is even true; seems like someone took advantage to post an Angies List posting after doing a project with another contractor and make us look bad at the same time. The entire story is so far out there. This person had us out to look at gutter and soffit, (we do not do roof cleaning) then had her roof destroyed by hail 6 days later, hired another company that knocked on her door but was already on her list to call because they were rated high on Angies List. This just sounds made up to me. We did no work for this person. Cheryl Cox, Marketing"
