Chris and his team are great! We had to redo our bay window a few years ago and hired University Painters to come paint the exterior. Timely and finished the job in a decent manner. It looks wonderful!

We are very pleased with University Painters here in Dayton. Chris Reck arrived on-time, walked around with us and listened intently, then did an excellent job giving us an estimate. There was also good communication to schedule a time for the painters to arrive. The painter Brandon did an outstanding job! Not only was he punctual, but very professional in both conduct and workmanship. He took some requested changes in the work in stride and corrected the very few mistakes in workmanship without question. We would definitely hire University Painters again and by-name request Brandon to do the work.

This is the third time we have used University Painters over the last few years and we have been remiss in not documenting their outstanding work. Chris was extremely responsive in meeting with us and providing an estimate. We picked out the stain color we wanted at Sherwin Williams and provided that info. Mary and Don were assigned to do the job and they kept us informed regarding our scheduled work as weather issues impacted our outside work. They did an outstanding job as usual and we will continue to use University Painters in the future as the need arises.

The crew leader was very knowledgeable about painting and eager to do a good job.  We were quoted a competitive price and fast work (~1 week).  The crew struggled to complete the job in a week and seemed to cut corners toward the end of the week.  We had to ask them  to return after the job was complete to address areas that were not done correctly.  Specifically, a different finish was used on the trim in the front of the house, the coverage on the stucco in the back of the house was not complete leaving a mottled finish and there were areas that had not been painted at all.  Again, the crew did return to complete the work eventually, but I would expect them to do a walk through and address areas of need prior to deeming the job complete.  We are happy with the final results, but the process could have been more pleasant.

Workers had no idea how to remove wall paper. Pulled off paper in the hallways without scouring or applying wall paper remover first, leaving the backing stuck to the walls. They then tried to spray a solution on the walls. I had to constantly remind them to use drop cloths, but they had not brought enough to protect my hardwood floors. They then proceeded to try and sand the backing off of the walls in the hallways without using a vaccum bag on the sander. What a mess. Well that was what I thought until I saw the fiasco in my masterbath. Travis did not bring the correct remover, this paper was pasted on. He did not scour the paper, tried to just surface wet and pull it off. He suceeded in pulling off large amounts of the drywall paper. He then tried to fill in the gouges leaving numerous uneven surfaces. He called someone and they decided that the wallpaper had not been sized although I'm fairly sure that it had, and decided to paint over it. In places such as the water closet behind the toilet, where he failed to paint at all and in places where the colors of the paper was bleeding through he just took a brush and streaked it up. There are paint drips around the light switches. At the baseboards you can see where the wall paper was not totally removed. Thats an overview of the walls now on to the ceilings. I have beams in the master bedroom, family room and kitchen. Because we used the same color paint they thought they would just hit it here and there. They did not paint within five inches of the beams because they said they didn't want to get paint on the beams. Chris came out and looked at my house. He knew I had beams and should have sent someone who could cut in around the beams. On the advice of another contractor we bought a special light and let them use it to see how to get a even coat on the ceilings. It looked better, but you still see uneven paint lines. They did not have a ladder tall enough to get all the way to the to top and had to borrow one from us. They also , evidently did not have an extension pole since I noticed paint on the one I had in the garage after they left. I called Chris twice, once for a remedy for the ceiling and another time to tell him him how unhappy I was with the wallpaper removal and overall paint job. He expressed his regrets. To add Insult to injury he still charged me for removing the paper he painted over. I appreciate the opportunity to air my grievances. We have experienced some health issues and could not deal with these issues at the time.

Response from University Painters
"Reviews like these are why I don't make Angie's List a part of our marketing. Here is an unqualified person, making wild and unfounded speculations about this project. She should be unhappy with whomever installed her wallpaper, and failed to size the walls. But instead her grievance is placed onto the people trying to correct the mistake of another. The backing of wallpaper will completely rip off the drywall paper if there was no so sizing done, to put a barrier between the backing glue and the drywall paper. We have removed wallpaper well over 1,000 times in the last 16 years. We know this is an error on the shoulders of the wallpaper installer, but instead it's been put onto our shoulders. This complaint is unfounded and misguided, We did what we could do with what we had to work with."

They did an excellent job, Chris was prompt on showing up for the estimate and the job was scheduled. The painters were clean and prompt. We used them to paint a two story foyer and hallway. The quality of materials they use are first rate.

Chris was very unprofessional. He arrived on time and I requested two estimates. One estimate was for the cost to paint only the trim on my home. The second estimate was for the cost to paint the entire exterior of my home (trim and rest of house) as well as my back deck. Apparently, the request confused him because he kept explaining that the cost to paint the trim would be different in the two estimates. I replied (several times) that I understood that...essentially, the cost to paint the trim would be less if grouped with the larger project. After several rounds of Chris telling me the price would be different, I despaired of actually getting either estimate. He grew increasingly agitated, literally threw his arms up, and stormed off.
Response from University Painters
"I meet with several hundred customers each year to provide written estimates. I've done this for 16 years.I completely understand the need to have separate estimates at times. The homeowner couldn't comprehend the idea that pricing the siding and the trim as separate projects would be more costly than if it were done at one time, all together. It costs more money to do them separately. I attempted to explain that to him, for no other reason than to save him money. I was completely willing to price the trim and siding separate, but was being forthcoming on the cost difference. He then became very condescending, laughed at me, and told me that "the other 5 contractors understood what I meant". I correctly identified the situation as a bad one, and walked away without incident. This was also after him telling me (upon my arrival) that he wasn't sticking around for the scheduled estimate time, which allows me to go over everything with him. He showed that his time was valuable, while mine was not. Now the customer is taking time to inflict damage upon our reputation (we didn't even provide an estimate, let alone do any work). Actions do speak very loudly."

Very pleased with paint job. We had a one man show, Jim, who had 35 years of paint experience. I had interviewed one other company, who's quote was less expensive, but the owner smelled like he regularly hung out at a bar. I was so thankful to have a SOBER painter in my home. Jim was punctual, flexible and did all the extras that you would expect for a quality job. He worked his butt off stripping wallpaper out of a very tricky bathroom. The owner, Chris, was very personable and knowledgeable. They have a guarantee with their work, so I'm not sure why some of the reviewers didn't give a call back to fix their complaints. Highly recommend.

We chose dark colors for the interior walls which they did an awesome job getting the transition lines straight. I had also made some modifications to the original contract which became a point of discussion but Chris and Travis where very professional and worked the details out. Overall I was satisfied with the quality, price and speed of the job and would hire them for my next project.

.iT WAS A VERY BAD EXPIRENCE FOR ME. AND MAKES ME VERY LEERY OF HIRING ANOTHER CONTRACTOR. I FEEL THAT THE OWNER LIED TO ME WHEN HE SAID THAT THEY DID NOT HIRE SUBCONTRACTORS. I WOULD NOT HAVE CHOOSEN THIS COMPANY HAD I KNOWEN. AND ANGIE HE IS ON YOUR LIST !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Response from University Painters
"This venomous review is compiled of lies from an unstable customer. It's a shame that a high quality company can be unfairly and socially attacked in this manner. Many times other people pay the price from previous bad experiences. We bent over backwards for this customer to try to correct an already failing door."

They missed a lot of spots, left a lot of paint in the planting beds from the pressure washing and scraping, and I was not impressed. I would not re-hire them for any painting. I would like to give them the opportunity to back up their promises and improve upon a crappy job. I am getting ready to take pictures of all the places they missed and the overspray from the spray cans of trim paint they got all over my windows and I'm going to post them on line. I am also getting ready to buy paint and re-paint my whole freaking house. I'd like University painters to come out, look at what their job looks like less than 2 years later and see if they'd like the chance to make it right.

The way this contractor does business is a joke. To begin with, I took leave from work to meet Chris Reck at my home for an estimate. After waiting for 20 minutes with no sign of Chris nor a phone call indicating he was running late, I contacted his office. The woman that answered the phone claimed that she left a message at my number stating that Chris would have to cancel my appointment.....which is a lie. When I told her I'd like to speak with a manger or Chris himself concerning the matter she stated that Chris is the manager and she is his wife. Well, as you can see the fact that she lied to me would fall on deaf ears if I spoke with Chris. You would think that if a company such as this had a scheduling issue they would be professional about resolving their situation....instead they cost me leave from work and lied to me.
Response from University Painters
"We keep notes of our call logs. My wife, Ericka, called and actually spoke to Member on Monday June 25th to inform him that we would need to reschedule our appointment (which was set up for June 28th). Member was not willing to reschedule for any other days, nor for next week even. (I had already been scheduled for appointments away from Fairborn, and couldn't physically make Member's appointment at that time.) Ericka told him that she would try to re-arrange a few appointments to make it happen for him. She was unable to do so, and then in fact DID call him back and leave a message on Tuesday June 26th at 1:32 pm to inform him that we would not make the Thursday appointment. She also tried again on Wednesday the 27th, after not hearing back from him....But did not leave a message this time. Member did call us back on Thursday as he stated above. He was very angry and not willing to reschedule. We could not have done anymore than what we did in this situation. I am VERY punctual and relish the NEED for 100% communication. I preach communication to everyone within our company. We deal with 7-10 appointments per day. There is constant need to adjust and fine tune the schedule. Outside of being mistaken for Student Painters once, this is the first time in 14 years that this has happened. We did our part, and there was nothing more we could have done."

Chris Reck came to look over the job and prepare an estimate; he was prompt and courteous. After we accepted the proposal he needed to come out again for us to sign the contract. Chris completely forgot this second appointment and called later that day to reschedule. When the painters came out the job seemed to progress in a timely fashion, and they were prompt and courteous. At the walk-through at the end of the job I didn't see any glaring issues. However, when we started putting the house back in order we discovered tiny speckles of the white paint on our maroon carpeting. We found speckles of paint on the carpeting in all the rooms; also, the top of a black filing cabinet was covered with them, and we found paint on the stained wood baseboard molding. I know University Painters owns dropcloths because I saw some spread around the house. But they were not faithful in their use of them, resulting in substandard quality. The paint speckles on the floor combined with Chris completely missing an appointment are enough for me to seek another contractor the next time I have a painting project.
Response from University Painters
"I take full ownership for paint speckles anywhere in the house. A drop clop used in all areas would have eliminated that issue. However, I never forgot any appointment. Our appointments are kept on-line and with 2 schedulers which I live off of to tell me where I need to be and when. Any re-scheduling would have been made with confirmation with customer. We do have to sometimes change our schedule due to territory and driving issues. But we always keep the customer in the loop."

They came out to provide a quote the same day I called. We discussed the details of the painting we wanted, type and color of paint and the quality of work to be done. Quote was not the lowest one we had but we felt they were the most professional and made us feel they would do the best job. Painting started about 1 week later than originally scheduled but once our painter, Travis, got started he knocked out the job very quickly in a day and a half. He was so quick I was concerned that the quality may be a little lacking but after a close inspection I found the quality to be excellent, only requiring a couple of minor touchups. Overall the paint job looks great and the price was very good. Will absolutely consider using Unversity Painters for our future painting needs,
