"I am disappointed to see that we have an unhappy customer as a client's satisfaction is of the utmost importance to our business. As a custom furniture builder based in Dublin, OH since 1989 we sell Amish-built furniture that has a high degree of flexibility. Clients are able to choose from our selections of woods, stains, sizes and options and then we build the order for them. We are different than a stock furniture store where items are warehoused and ready to ship. When a client places an order with us the materials are ordered, labor resources are allocated and the job goes into our production schedule. We have terms of sale posted prominently at our sales counters that reminds clients that we are certainly accountable for issues of quality or workmanship but that they need to be very careful about the choices they make re. stain, size, species, etc. as these are solely their choices. We are happy to advise them but ultimately the clients agree to or make these decisions. There is a statement on the Sales Invoice that by placing a deposit the client is also agreeing to these same terms of sale and a link to where these terms can be reviewed on our website is listed. When the couple came in to order the stools they chose one of our standard stains to put on the stools. A few days later, they (or possibly just the wife) came in again with one of their cabinet doors or drawers to which they were trying to match the stools. They then decided to change the stain to a different selection. It was demonstrated to them that we did not really have a standard stain that matched their sample as it had an unusual cast to it. They made the decision to choose one of our standard stains (hoping it would be close enough) rather than pay the additional charge of $120 for custom stain matching. I explained that in Brown Maple with a light stain color there was bound to be more visible color variation and clients said they understood. I added this same language to the revised invoice copy they were provided : "1/21 Revised stain to "Lite Amber ( Rev ) FC-5412 per customer. They understand variation in wood will show in this lighter stain." The client did not leave their cabinet door in our possession since they did not opt for the Custom Stain Match option. When the stools came in, the clients were not happy with the stain color. I sent our specialist out to the clients home along with the standard stain sample the clients picked. My specialist and the clients agreed that the stools did indeed match the sample that they chose after all. At that point, our obligation to the clients had been fulfilled as they received exactly what they had ordered. However, as the clients were not happy with their stain choice and in the interests of still trying to help them I emailed the client and offered to split the cost of re-staining the stools for them. In this same email I made mention that while I was relieved that our stain and quality control process seemed to be working as we would expect I did want to work to ensure they were happy. The client responded simply “Thank you Rod, I’m gonna pass” with no disagreement that we had not matched the color as they had picked it. Our ultimate goal is for our clients to be happy when they purchase from us. It is unfortunate that these clients did not like the way the stain they picked looked with their cabinets. My statements and offers of assistance to the client still stand should they change their mind. Regards – Rod Geitgey, Owner"
