"Regretfully we can not find any record of quoting this. We did gook back to June 15, 2012 as per the listing but still couldn't find the quote. The 30% tax credit would not effect the pricing the system as this is tax credit from the Federal Government and has no bearing on the cost of the equipment. We also are a WaterFurnace dealer and would not be quoting on a Bryant geothermal system. When quoting a geothermal system one of the largest costs is the loop installation which can be done several ways, each with a different cost structure. A vertical drill is much more expensive then a dug trench for example. We include these costs in the quote from the vendor that would do the work but don't mark them up."
He told me the repair cost would be around $125. I questioned the cost as I said these capacitors run less than $15 and the time to replace it is only 15 minutes. He looked nervous. He stated no "the capacitors are quite expensive'. Off course I did not believe him.
He tried to convince me to add on a few more jobs which would cost another $250 to prolong the life of my air conditioner units. I do have 2 air conditioner units of which only 1 is working.
I later decided I would just go with what needed to be done today, which was change the capacitor. I figured if they make $110 profit that would be fine after all the company has to make some money and pay the service guy. I stated the total would be $125 right? He stated no there would be $80 diagnostic fee. I stated I told you what the problem was. You simply agreed. I was hesitant to repair the unit myself because of the high voltage. At that moment, I ran inside and got my phone and showed him the price of the capacitor by googling the model number. It was only $18 on the first company that showed up on my i phone.
I ended up not getting any work done.
Prior to calling in the technician, I was told by the scheduler's from Federal Heating & Cooling the diagnostic fee would not be applied if the work was done the same day. The scheduler's also told me the technician would be thorough and would check everything out. The technician never even bothered to check my AC unit in the basement because he knew the problem was the capacitor has the stop was dome shaped as opposed to flat.
I ended up ordering the part on line for $10 and shipping will be $4. The lady who I spoke to online said this was a relatively simple thing to install.
Bottom line. Do your research before hiring any people to fix your AC units.
"We are sorry to hear [Member Name Removed] was dissatisfied with the pricing of the capacitor for his AC unit. The average price for replacing a capacitor in the industry ranges from $100 to $250 depending on the cost of the capacitor which can range anywhere from a few bucks to several hundred dollars. So $125 seems pretty reasonable. There is a big difference between a parts supplier and a service company. We actually don't sell parts we repair the units using parts so that cost of the capacitor is only a fraction of what the service costs. It takes a trained service technician in a thirty thousand dollar vehicle equipped with ten thousand dollars of parts and tools plus diagnostic equipment, travel, Training, insurance etc.... While this is a relatively minor repair there is still the need to be trained on the systems and be aware of the risks of high voltage etc... we also grantee the part for one year and the service labor for thirty days. The replacement capacitors are round and not oval because we choose to utilize the capacitors made in America as opposed to the oval ones produced in other countries. I'm certain the Technician would have been willing to evaluate the rest of the system for the customer but he was informed not to make the repair. We regret [Member Name Removed] was not satisfied with the service pricing."
