Multi-unit association hired Makley Painting to scrape, spot prime, and paint the exterior trim: eves, soffits of five 2-story buildings. Also included were the front and back porches /over hangs on the ground level. Makley appropriately suggested to power wash the buildings prior to painting which we agreed to having done as part of the contract. Once power washed however, there was seemingly no scraping done, which the buildings were in need of; additionally, the contract included spot priming. This initially was not being done until the property manager approached Makley about priming. After which time the crew simply went over the bare wood with two coats of paint without drying time in between. Paint with primer was used; however with as much old, bare, dry wood as was exposed, traditional primer probably would have been the better product and with dry time in between coats of primer and paint. [Regardless of the applied product, the process was the worst part of this experience.] Additionally, all the chipped paint that should have been scraped is now simply covered in fresh paint. Additionally, there are thin spots through out.
In the weeks immediately after the paint job, the property manager and 2/3 of the association board walked the property and pointed several things out for feedback back to Makley, including the scraping that didn't get done. I do believe much of the minor touch-ups were addressed. However the major scraping that should have been done as part of the job remained undone. This is particularly evident on many of the doors and then on the 2nd story soffits. When asked about cleaning up the glass in the doors after painting them, the response relayed to the board was that Makley wasn't going to clean up someone else's job. (Prior paint job) Perhaps that is technically true. I guess I would ask about having pride in your own work and leaving a positive mark on your own behalf.
The crew that I interacted with were all nice enough, and put in full days work and then some. And they did a nice job of keeping paint off the brick. However based on the results of the painted surfaces, I would never hire this company again. I can only assume they didn't want to do the actual work they were hired to do. If the job was priced too cheaply to actually spend time doing the most important work (the prep), then the job should have been priced more appropriately. Now Makley has a bad review, and we're going to have to have the buildings painted again sooner rather than later. Nobody wins here.
We contacted this company to paint our basement and a bathroom. Mr. Makley gave us an estimate in a timely manner. He gave us recommendations on the type of paint to use. He suggested that two coats of paint would be needed since we were changing colors from the one that was currently on the walls. This estimate was the best of all estimates that we received. He gave us a date that he would arrive to paint and after confirming by telephone he arrived as expected. He was meticulous in the preparation of the surfaces to be painted as well as taping off around our stained baseboards and trim. I was pleased with how quckly he worked- he was never just and quot;standing around.and quot; The area we had done was quite large and the job took two days to complete. Mr. Makley made sure that everything was cleaned up at the end of each work day.We were thrilled with the results. Mr. Makley made sure that he had us look over the areas painted before he left so that he could correct anything that we found. There was nothing that needed to be corrected.
I was very impressed with Mr. Makley's professionalism. I was very comfortable having him in my house. He was friendly and courteous. I will definitely use this company the next time I need painting done.
We asked Mr Makley why he hadn't and quot;cleaned upand quot; the messy parts. He said that he quoted us for and quot;walls onlyand quot;. I said that I could see old paint everywhere and we had clearly asked him to clean that up. I asked him why he didn't touch up the trim with white and he responded that when he paints trim, he paints all of it. Then I asked him if he would be satisfied if this was his house which he didn't respond to. He finally suggested that he would paint over the old paint if we liked. To be clear, he was offering to paint over the old color that was not supposed to be on the white trim to begin with. So he would rather exacerbate the problem instead of properly fix it. I didn't know if he was being serious or sarcastic. I guess it didn't matter either way.
That weekend, I spend about an hour using a razor blade to remove old paint from the cabinet and touching up the trim. That was apparently too much to ask out of Mr Makley. It was a bad experience and I won't hire him again.
"I am very sorry to hear how dissatisfied the customer was with the job that I did at their home. I always do my best to make sure that all my customers are happy before leaving the job. In this instance, there was definitely a miscommunication not only between me and the customer, but also between him and his wife on the exact extent of the job they wanted completed. I was contacted by the wife to give an estimate for painting their master bath room and a powder room. I met with her on 8-9-2012. She showed me the areas she wanted painted. The powder room had been painted by a previous painter who was sloppy and got paint on the ceiling, trim and cabinets. She expressed to me that they were not happy with the previous painter's work and that they wanted it fixed. We discussed this, and I suggested that to fix it properly the ceiling and trim would have to be completely repainted to cover up the old paint for an added cost to the job. She told me they did not want to have me paint the ceiling and the trim to properly fix the problem, so it was not written into the estimate that was given to them. This was the only time that the ceiling and trim were discussed. In my opinion, the estimate went very well. She was very nice and friendly. I told her I would forward her an estimate and sent her one later that day via email. The estimate clearly stated that it was a walls only job. There was no mention of ceiling, trim or cleaning of the previous painters mess. She emailed me back and said she wanted to move forward with the job. There was 2 weeks between the time they received the written estimate and the day I completed the work. During this time, she and I emailed back and forth about scheduling, paint products and colors. Looking back on our emails to one another, there was never a question or concern about the previous contractors paint on the trim, cabinet or ceiling in the powder room. The day that I did the work I arrived on time and completed the job that day. After I was done cleaning up, she inspected both bathrooms that I painted and said she was pleased and paid me and I left. When I got home that evening I received a call from the husband. This was the first time that I had talked to or had any communication at all with him. It was very apparent that he was not happy with the bathroom that was previously painted. He explained to me that he was under the impression I was going to take care of the mess that the other painter left. I tried to explain to him that I suggested to her what I thought needed to be done to properly fix the problem and that she didn't want it done. I also told him that the written estimate I provided did not include that extra work. I tried my best to find a solution to the problem offering many times to come back to his house and address any problems he had with the walls free of charge and to go over what could be done to resolve the problem with the previous painter. If he had issues with the walls I painted, he did not mention that during our phone conversation. In fact, we spoke on the phone for almost 30 minutes trying to resolve the problem. He declined my offer to come back to help resolve the problem. The impression I got was that he did not have a problem with the work I completed, he was just upset about the misunderstanding of what he wanted done. Again, I would like to apologize to the family. I pride myself on never leaving a job with the costumer unhappy. In this case, I was unsuccessful, but I will try harder in the future to communicate better with both heads of the household to make sure all expectations are met."
