For the first few months, my lawn showed considerable improvements.  Then the weeds started coming back, then we started falling behind on service, including the slice seeding.  I tried contacting Al several times via email and telephone, he replied to one email and left me a voicemail, but never followed through on commitments and ultmately faded away.
On a side note, I had referred a friend to Al / Down to Earth, who called several times and never received a call back.  Apparently business is that good for Al.  Either was it's very embarrassing for me to make a referral and have the service provider not even call him back.  Oh well, you live and you learn - I trusted Al and had a good gut feel about him, only to be let down.  I would never want to intentionally harm anyones business, but poor business practices and lack up professionalism and common courtesy leads to bad reputations and as everyone knows, word travels fast.
Recommendations for Al
-Ditch the answering service, they sound like a bunch of minimum wage telemarketers.
-You are a small business - give out your cell phone and answer it.
-Return calls - Especially from new prospects that were referred to you by a customer.  In this case, it's cost you two customers.
In summary, the results we saw in less than a year we Al were fantastic.  I had high hopes for Al as a long term service provider for me.  Unfortunately, he dropped the ball and didn't seem to care.  I have a new provider coming out in a couple of days to check out my lawn and provide a recommended course of action.  They were recommended to me by a neighbor, I will hopefully be providing a positive review of them on Angie's List soon!

Very prompt response to my initial inquiry (via company website). Excellent follow-up from owner to determine the scope of the work I was requesting, including telephone calls to me outside of normal business hours. Work was done within the timeframe agreed to, and we were very pleased with the work. Excellent job, and we will definitely be calling Down to Earth for our spring clean-up and various landscaping needs in 2013.

I discovered Down to Earth 2 years ago while searching online for a good company to take care of our lawn of our new home. I have always dealt with Al who is the owner of the company and he is extremely professional and patient and friendly. Always on time and I do not have to remind him about the application. I am completely satisfied with the service that has been provided to me by Al and his company and never felt the need in these two years to hire any other company. My grass looks great and weed free. What's amazing is that I hardly see crab grass on the grass anymore. Al uses a preventative Weed control that totally controls the crab grass. The first year there were definitely some but in the second year they have diminished.
Whenever I have any questions or concerns regarding the lawn he has always patiently explained the problem and the possible solutions.
Infact I feel very happy when my neighbors ask me who takes care of my lawn and some have shifted to his company.
Ultimately the success of a good lawn is a good partnership between the lawn company and our own efforts in taking care of our lawn like sufficient watering etc .
