I've been using Other Side Lawn all year for mowing my lawn, and since they've done a decent job at it, so I figured I'd hire them to do a small project I had. There were two garden-type areas on the side of my house - one was surrounded by blocks and filled with gravel-size rocks, and the other was surrounded by a thin, green metal barrier and full of bushes (and weeds). I wanted to get rid of both areas and replace them with grass. So I asked Cory to give me a quote on whatever needed to be done so that in the spring I could just plant the grass seed and have grass grow. In addition, he was to use some of the blocks to finish an incomplete divider on another garden area of my yard. After looking at my yard, he gave me a quote that had 4 items in it: 1. Remove Shrubs 2. Till up soil for seed 3. Remove blocks and rocks 4. Finish Border around side I paid him the full amount when the work was only partway done, and he stopped working after being paid. Regarding the points above, here is what he completed: 1. Completed in full 2. He tilled the soil in one of the gardens, but not in the other 3. The blocks were removed, but the rocks were not 4. Not done at all. Additionally, instead of leaving the blocks so that I could complete the work myself, he took them with him. (he was supposed to take any extra blocks with him after finishing the border) When I communicated my concerns to him, he had several responses: - He heard me say that the work "looks good", and he understood that to mean that I thought the job was done - As for the rocks, he said that the rocks I see now were not visible when he did the work, and that rain/snow washed away soil that was hiding the rocks. - He told me that it was really a $1,000 job and that I was getting a really good deal because he was only charging me $300 All in all, I'm not satisfied for several reasons: - By his own admission, he did a poor job of estimating the work (by factor of over 300%) - His communication was poor. During the job, even once he got into it, he never mentioned that the work was more than he bargained for, and after the job was done, even though it was incomplete, he never contacted me to help me understand why he didn't finish some of the items and what more might need to be done. - When I was speaking/emailing with him about my concerns afterwards, my goal was still the same - I wanted a yard that I could plant grass in. But I found that every time I contacted him, I felt like he was attacking me rather than trying to work with me to help me get my yard to where I wanted it to be. - I asked him how much more work would be involved in getting these garden areas ready for grass planting - I was interested in paying him more to come out and finish the job. He recommended that I get someone else to do the work. I want a nice looking yard. I realize I have to pay money to people to do work in my yard, and sometimes it takes a lot of money, and that's fine. Not once did I complain about how much I had to pay, nor did I ask him to give me a refund. My questions were centered around trying to understand why he thought the job was done when I didn't, and what more would need to be done to get my yard where I wanted it to be. I want to work with someone who is going to communicate with me, who is going to partner with me on my yard, and who is going to lower the amount of stress in my life, not raise it. OtherSideLawn does not meet those criteria.
Response from Other Side Lawn & Landscape LLC
"We let the customer know that the rocks were mixed into the soil 4" deep. We then explained to him that the rain will eventually wash the soil off the rocks, thus exposing them. When he came out to check the final product, he thanked us and said it looked great. What else could we have done? Months later, we get this message on angies list about the problem. This is the second time this same customer has had an issue and never contacted us about this. We have to find out via angies list that there was an issue. WE CAN"T FIX A PROBLEM THAT WE ARE NOT AWARE OF."

Very well - came out twice afterward to address minor issues and did not charge for either repeat trip. Very professional and responsive!

They seem to do a good job - not great, but it is good. Another company offered to do it for $35 a cutting instead of $40, but Other Side Lawn does good enough for me. Sometimes they'll miss some of the edging around the fence, but it doesn't really bother me. Strangely, I've had to ask them to send me a bill a couple of times. I think they're putting the bill in the mailbox after they cut and then the mailman removes it when he delivers the mail, so I don't get the bill.

It went very well and Cory stayed in touch with us after his visit to ensure we were happy. He made a second visit to reinforce seeding and laid hay down on the areas that weren't growing and the results are terrific!

What a fantastic experience. Cory showed up right when he said he was going to. After I accepted the estimate, he and his crew got right to work. They finished the whole job in one day, very efficient and unintrusive. They were all very professional and courteous young men. I would highly recommend them to anyone and everyone.
