D&R Remodeling

I'm an advanced DIY'er. I'm not a trained carpenter and/or contractor. I've done my own home improvement projects my whole life. I started this project (deck) but my back went out. I used Gennovations railing and decking. The material is expensive and easy to work with but you need to take your time (measure 3 times and then cut). It also requires some homework and how-tos before you start. There is no going back to finish...if you mess up you start over.
Normally, I shop around for quotes...try to get at least three. I used Dand R Remodeling (Chuck) because he was referred by a colleague I trust. I saw pictures of the work Chuck had done for him. My colleague was very pleased with Chuck's work.
Chuck mentioned that they do not like to take on finishing what someone else started. I can respect that.
Looking back...There were indicators that Chuck was not the right person for the job (considering my standards). I had Chuck bid work on a new basement bedroom and finishing a basement bathroom. For the bedroom, Chuck recommended constructing the new wall over existing carpet and he suggested not applying for permits.
Overall, I was not happy with Dand R Remodeling's craftsmanship...quality of work. I would compare the work to builder-grade quality but note that I have high standards (according to Chuck...and quot;unrealistic expectationsand quot;). In the end, the quoted price was reasonable and he did not try to mark up the material costs. He never asked for money up front. We (Chuck and I) butted heads during a final walk through. After he addressed (fixed) some items, I paid him the quoted price and we parted ways.
I had most of the material on-site to complete this job. I had to order a new stair rail and some C-Channel which caused some delays. I also had to get stair kick-plate vinyl. Chuck had to get Vinyl ceiling and j-channel.
I do fault myself. I did not ask for a line by line statement of work. Initially, I did a walk through and made assumptions that we were on the same page. The quote was provided in the body of an email and not everything was addressed that we discussed in the walk through. Again, I made some assumptions. Also, there were some issues due to the limitations of the material/product.
