My biggest issue with Titlon's quote was that $250 was for parts. When I got home later, I discovered that a conservative price for the parts was $90. If I really went with budget parts I could have purchased them for $40. I don't mind that they have a mark-up, but 150% is a rip off. There is no other way to put it.
I ended up repairing it myself for nothing.
I am deeply disappointed by Tilton's as they came recommended and I do think they do good work, but ripping customers off by jacking up the price of parts is no way to get and maintain business.
UPDATE: In response to my review here on Angie's List, the owner of Tilton's called me. He asked that I clearly state that Tilton's did not do the repairs. He added that he only buys warrantied parts and he marks them up 50% and claimed that markup is standard for the industry. I for one think that markup is too high for consumers and have decided to take my business elsewhere.
I would urge places like Tilton's allow consumers to have a choice in the part selection process. Frankly, my car is 16 years old. I don't need the top brand parts. Maybe if they allowed their customers to sign a waiver or something like that for the use of affordable parts.
I am so disappointed in Tilton?s! I have been a customer since 2007 and have had good experiences until now. As a single woman, I always felt confident that they were honest in their diagnosis of my car. That was until now. If I had followed Andy?s recent diagnosis, I would have authorized close to $2000 worth of work that did not need to be done! I had my car towed to Tilton?s and they correctly diagnosed that it needed a new battery and fuse ($300) and incorrectly advised I needed new rear brakes ($700.-I skipped this advice). The battery and fuse service experience went well. When I drove the car home, however, it was not shifting properly so I took it back and they told me it needed a new computer to the tune of $1200. They said they were certain that was my only option to get it running again. I went to pick up my car and told Andy I was taking it to Lexus for a second opinion and he said, ?Why?! We can do anything they can do.? I thought that was a little rude and confrontational, but brushed it aside.
I was fully prepared for Lexus to agree with Andy, as I truly trusted his opinion. Thankfully, they not only said I didn?t need a new computer, they also said I didn?t need new brakes. For just a diagnosis fee, they had me on my way and my car is great. Had I followed Andy?s advice, I would have spent close to $2,000 on unneeded repairs and been none the wiser.
I called Andy to let him know my disappointment. He sounded genuinely surprised that Lexus was able to fix it without a new computer and agreed to call Lexus to see how he could prevent such a ?mistake? in the future. He asked for the name of my service tech, which I provided and said he would call me back shortly. At this point, I still believe that he will do the right thing and was looking forward to the promised return call to let me know what Lexus said. The call only never came, he also didn?t return two follow-up e-mails and one voice mail. So now, I am led to believe of two things: 1. That they knew my car didn?t need a new computer and brakes and were trying to scam a single woman (happens all the time in the car repair industry) or 2. That they genuinely made a $2,000 mistake and just have crappy customer service.
I am sadly leaning more towards the scam at this point, especially since he was so adamant that I didn?t need to get a second opinion. So disappointing. For a single mom, 2k in unneeded repairs would have been catastrophic. Use Tilton?s and any other auto repair shop with caution. A second onion can save you thousands!
with customer about timing of repair work can occasionally be a little patchy.
(1) Car evaluation:
Information was complete and as best I can judge correct and honest.
(2) Manifold: Work done appropriately. The pricing, however, is on the high end.
I afterwards called a number of other comparable shops for some other work, all on Angie?s list and with a comparable good
rating and found Tilton?s to be the most expensive
They're good. It's actually a converted gas station but they don't sell gas any more. Its totally car repair. They have so many customers that they can't fit all the cars. If you can imagine a gas station, its not real big. They don't have any room for all the cars that are going in to be fixed. They are doing really well. I'm really happy with them.
He's never stood me up and he's very professional.
The next day, I had not heard from them at all and it was approaching the end of the work day, so I called them. I was told they had not even looked at my car yet. An hour or two later they called at the end of the work day with a laundry list of maintenance recommendations (which were expected).
My wife and I work full time (or more) and have two small children. Going without a car for 2 days makes life difficult. Add in the extra steps (and liability) to borrow a car from Tiltons to let them keep my car another day (or would it have been 2?) made me decide not to do business with them.
They were all professional, seemed konwledgeable, prices weren't low but seemed in line with the industry. Their failure to manage their time and communicate is a big red flag. If they were too busy they should have told me. It would not have been a problem for me to bring in my car at a later date. I also think they should have offered to do some portion of the services free or discounted to make up for their poor service/planning. If they had offered anything like that I likely would have accepted and wouldnt' have written this review.
