They showed up as promised. Called when they were on their way. They were respectful of the yard and neighbors. They were slightly more expensive than another company we had out but decided to use them because of neighborhood referrals.

Thompson was fantastic. They responded quickly to our request, fit us into their schedule within 3 days and showed up right on time. Upon an inspection of our fireplace they found a piece of insulation shoved up into the flue. If they hadn’t found it and we had started the fireplace we would’ve had a major fire. They also inspected the chimney and said there was so little work to be done that they were going to reduce the price that we were originally quoted. Certainly didn’t inspect that expect that! Thanks Thompson, you’re now on our list of favorite providers.

They said they would come out on a Wednesday. Then they had to reschedule for a Friday. Then the guy was late on that Friday. Then he said he couldn't do the job because they didn't tell him it was a firebox. My initial request read "firebox inside fireplace". I gave them a week to call me and see if they could make up for it. No call.
Response from Thompson Chimney Services
"The reason we had to reschedule was not because a firebox, it was because it was a wood stove. To properly clean the stove we needed two people. Sweeps are scheduled for a one person job, any time there is a stove a second person is needed."

I called and left a message to schedule an estimate. My message was returned the next day and an appointment was scheduled at my home for Monday August 3 between 1-3 PM. I received an email confirmation of the appointment and time. Nobody showed up. I sent an email and left a voicemail a bit after 3 pm that day to inquire about the no-show and to see if they ran into an issue and if they would need to re-schedule. I never heard back from anyone at this company on my voicemail or email. Just blown off by them it seems.

We have used Thompsons several times for issues with our chimney. Every time they have been outstanding in their concern for our project, personable, reliable, and professional. They respond to you immediately and do their best to be there as quickly as possible. Their crews take the time to talk to us and report what they find and what they repaired. There is no one else that will ever do our chimney work for us. You cannot go wrong with contracting with this company – ever! So I highly recommend you call on these folks!

They did an excellent job and they really worked hard to match to the old brick. Also because the house is over 100 years old, they did a great job of getting them to the right size. They got it done as quickly as they could and the crew was very nice and professional. I would highly recommend them.

The chimney is 98 years old and has been re-tuckpointed and had flashing recaulked multiple times. We cannot find how water is getting in. I asked three contractors to tell me what they could do. D M Thompson's proposed solution was to tear off the chimney altogether and replace the exposed outside wall with siding. The representative who came showed little enthusiasm or creativity, and their quote for removal was higher than those I received for repair. Other contractors had more reasonable proposals. The one we chose was the only one who actually climbed onto the roof to do an inspection.

They did the work as described in the estimate but it did not fix the problem. Have called multiple times to get them to come out again but they never show up or call to reschedule. Very unsatisfied, would not recommend at all.

Concrete crowns were installed on two chimneys. Cut out and tuck point of deteriorated mortar joints at the top of the chimneys was also to be done. In hindsight pictures of the completed work should have been requested from DM Thompson as their work cannot be directly inspected. Work was "completed" in 2017. Just one year later our roofer provided pictures of our chimneys recommending repair. Unfilled mortar joints and cracks are apparent in the brick and the concrete crowns. Pictures were sent to DM Thompson in the fall of 2018 and repair was promised this spring (2019) but they have now stated that they are finished with this job claiming quality work.

I have no idea how this is the highest reviewed company for chimney repair. I have had nothing but problems with this company, and my service hasn't even been performed yet. When I first requested a quote, I let them know that they would need to contact our home warranty servicer to make sure the work was covered. They contacted them, and the warranty servicer asked for specific information about the work that needed to be done in order to make sure it was covered. DM Thompson said they couldn't provide this information until the work was done, but they had no problem sending me an invoice with the exact dollar amount before any work was even scheduled. The warranty servicer said they could not cover anything due to the lack of information, so now I'm stuck paying out of pocket. Then, I went ahead and scheduled the work for December 3, and paid the 1/3 deposit they require. I set up an account through their financing partner (Blispay), only to receive notification the week before the work was supposed to be done that Blispay is no longer taking new charges. Obviously that's not DM Thompson's fault, but it was just one more thing piling on. On 12/3, I received a call that they would have to reschedule our service for 12/8 due to weather. On 12/8, there was no evidence that any work had been done or that anyone had come by at all. I then finally contacted DM Thompson on 12/11 after not hearing from them, and was told it needed to be rescheduled again to 12/15. Same story that day. I contacted them on 12/18 to find out what was going on, and was told they were "backed up due to weather" and the work had been rescheduled again for 1/11/19. I understand that weather can cause delays, but I also know that 12/15 was a sunny day with no precipitation. Each time the work has been rescheduled, except for the first time, I have had to contact them. This company is unprofessional, and if my work "needs" to be rescheduled again, I am seriously considering asking for my deposit back. If their office is this unprofessional, I'm afraid the repair work might be, too.
Response from Thompson Chimney Services
"As far as not providing enough information to the home warranty company, we provided everything they asked for, they wanted exact pieces of flashing we would be using and we was only able to give them a estimate, we cannot provide exact numbers due to the flashing maybe worse than what we anticipated once we start replacing, but that would not have affected the price that was given to the customer. We had also reach out to this customer numerous times and did not receive call backs, as far as rescheduling due to weather, the weather is beyond our control and we do need to follow the schedule and who was scheduled prior. As far as the Blispay, we offered this to our customers because we had been asking numerous times if we provided financing. We are unable to control what another company has done or does and we notified all of our customers as soon as we was notified so that other arrangements could be made, or there deposits be returned if they was unable to move forward with there project. We do not send invoices to anyone before work is scheduled, however we will send estimates that lets a customer know up front cost when they contact us. Our policy is once you call to schedule we do require 1/3 down to purchase all materials that are needed for the job, then there is nothing else due until the work is completed. We are a very professional company and cannot control the actions of others and information that may be needed that we are not able to give specific amounts at the time, we will not lie or guess we will only give true and accurate information. This customers deposit was returned and all work was cancelled on our end due to lack of communication."

We've used D.M. Thompson for a handful of chimney related projects in the past. They have always been very responsive to our requests and extremely professional in doing their work. This time we had the chimney swept and inspected and also inquired about having gas logs installed. Mike was very helpful in answering questions and completing the required tasks. When we followed up to have the gas logs installed they set up a time right away. Mike was on time (in fact a little early) for the appointment and had the logs installed in no time. As always he was very careful to not make a mess and answered any questions I had about the installation. We will continue to use their services in the future.

Dec 2014 we hired D M Thompson Masonry to demolish our old chimney and rebuild a new one. The masonry aspect went well, but D M Thompson's work is totally inadequate in interfacing with other aspects of the building ... in our case, the roof. As a result, we had a leak that ran down the interior of the wall that resulted in hidden damage. This past summer's record rains exposed the problem D M Thompson created four years ago. We contacted D M Thompson and had an appointment set up. They didn't show. We set up another appointment. They didn't show. So we hired someone else to fix the roof-chimney interface at a cost of about $2,000 (approximate, because we had some other work done not related to the chimney). We still have to repair the damage inside the house. We don't yet have an estimate for this.
Response from Thompson Chimney Services
"DM Thompson Chimney repair has a one year warranty on any masonry repairs. Our warranty does not cover pre-existing or future water issues as this could be coming through the roof or other areas than the chimney. We did not hear anything from this client within the one year time, two year time or even three year time frame. I am not quite sure what they are talking about when they say the "roof-chimney interface". Whatever issue this person has with the "record rains" is clearly outside the scope of our one year warranty. It also did not have anything to do with the masonry. It seems to be a roof issue that they are blaming on the chimney work done nearly 4 years ago!"

Not good. One of the office personnel, Laura, called us back and left a message the next day (8/29/18) on our machine. That was appreciated. I called back this morning (8/30/18) shortly after they opened and left a message for her to call me back to schedule someone to come out and look at the chimneys and give us an estimate. She called in the afternoon and immediately started talking as if we were scheduling to have the job actually done, instead of giving an estimate. Laura talked rapidly, talked over my attempts to explain that we just wanted an estimate only at this point, and basically explained that they would come and run a camera up the chimneys to check for cracks or damage, etc before sweeping. She said that it would cost $199 per chimney to sweep. Again, Laura kept acting like we were actually scheduling the job and not an estimate. So, at one point, I had to ask if she had even read what I wanted done, on the Angie's list message. She pulled it up, looked at it, said that she had read it, and that Mike, the man that would probably be coming out, would discuss all with me. Only after I told her multiple times that we just wanted an estimate at this point, she finally said the estimate would be free and the process would run about 60 minutes. We decided on the date and time they would come out and THEN it really went down hill. Laura said they had to have my credit card on file because if we weren't there when they showed up, they would charge us $50. I told her that we would be there because I had other workmen coming to the house that same morning and their appointment was after that. And that I was not comfortable in giving them my credit card number when I don't even know if they are going to get the job. AGAIN, I told her we were looking for estimates only at this point and that she said the estimate was free. Laura said that UNLESS I gave her our credit card to have on file, they would not come out to give an estimate. At that point, I was so angry and frustrated that I told her they obviously didn't want our business and I hung up. I shouldn't have done that but I was fed up with her talking over me and not wanting to listen. And I REALLY don't see why they had to have our credit card on file when this is a free estimate only request. I am really disappointed After all the good reviews I read, I really had high hopes. But I can't trust a company who requires a credit card up front before they even know if they have the job. And I don't appreciate staff that don't listen to what a potential customer is trying to say.
Response from Thompson Chimney Services
"In the description of work the above person states " 3 non working fireplaces that need to be cleaned badly" Our cost to clean fireplaces is $199 per fireplace. This is not something we go out to look at. We give a price and description of work and a price up front. If they want the work scheduled we then require a credit card be on file. We do not do estimates for cleanings. I apologize if there was miscommunication between the office staff and the client. David Thompson"

We recently had our roof replaced and the roofer noticed some missing and loose mortar in the chimney. We got one estimate which was quite high. Based primary upon online reviews, we got an estimate from DM Thomson which was considerably more reasonable. They scheduled the work for a few weeks later. Arrived on time, were polite and professional, and work seemed to go well. Would recommend.
