"Thanks [Member name removed]! It was a pleasure working with you!"
"At Sherriff-Goslin it is our goal to provide every customer we enter into a contract with the best Quality and Customer Service possible. I regret the fact that we were not able to live up to this Members expectations and that is something we will continue to work on in the future. With that said I would like to provide a little more detail to the description provided by the Member. There was approximately 14' of gutter and gutter helmet that needed to be replaced due to tree damage. Unfortunately the type of gutter & helmet the Member has on her home, Gutter Genie, is discontinued and no longer available. That is why there was discussion of "taking care of the gutters as best we could". Sherriff-Goslin contacted the Members insurance company to explain the "Gutter Genie" issue and try to get more money for the gutter and gutter helmet replacement but were informed that would not be possible. It was also clear that the repair performed was not acceptable. At that point Sherriff-Goslin decided to contact a reputable seamless gutter company that it has used for over 2 years with no complaints, Bulldog Gutters. In an effort to keep uniformity on the appearance of the home it was decided to remove a length of gutter & helmet on a rear section of the home to replace the 14' of damaged gutter & helmet on the front of the home (This allowed all of the gutter & helmet on the front of the home to remain in the "Gutter Genie" style). We then replaced the section of gutter & helmet on the rear of the home with a like quality of gutter & helmet. All of which was done at no expense to the Member. Again, I would like to mention that it is Sherriff-Goslins goal to provide our customers the best Quality and Customer Service possible. We should have had a more open line of communication with this Member explaining the challenges we were having resolving her gutter & helmet issues. Something I feel is worth mentioning....the Member mentioned that she dealt with Ben Goslin several times in her review. There is no one by that name that works at Sherriff-Goslin. My assumption is that she is referring to Ben Sherriff."
"Sherriff-Goslin was glad to see that the Member was pleased with the roofing project that was performed. Unfortunately when dealing with insurance claims often times there is a lot of back and forth with the insurance company before the claim is finalized and work can begin. We did work with the insurance company on behalf of the homeowner. Moving forward Sherriff-Goslin will be sure to keep the Homeowner informed on where we are in the claims process and when they can expect the work to begin."
Shortly afterwards, I had a contractor working inside my house to repair water damage from the formerly leaky roof. He inspected my attic after a rainstorm to make sure the leak was stopped. He noticed that all original hat vents were covered over, but no cut-outs had been made to allow the new ridge vents to work! Further inspection of my roofing job by my contractor revealed a whole host of additional problems:
Big Problems: 1. No ice and water guards around perimeter of roof, as agreed upon. 2. No tar paper under a large section of the bottom edge of the East side of my attached garage. 3. Ridge vents: plywood not cut out for any of the ridge vents. They were just stuck onto the peaks. They should be cut open 2 inches (at least) on each side of peak. 4. Exposed plywood where fascia of house meets garage roof.
Other Problems:1. Shingles do not overhang 1 inch over gutters and past drip edge. 2. Drip edges sometimes do not hang low enough into gutters, e.g. at the lower end of gutters where downspouts are located. This allows water to run off behind the gutter, and against the fascia of house. 3. No caulking on any exposed nail heads. 4. Ridge vent was a bad product, i.e. not cheap bad, but extremely poor design. 5. No caulking around furnace vent 6. Poor workmanship around chimney, an area we asked them to pay special attention to as the suspected source of our leak. Quite simply, I was shocked and angry to learn of all of these problems with our new roof!
I called the local supervisor and showed him this list of problems. We resolved a couple of them quickly... a. The ice guards were in place but just a different, newer type than I've seen before. b. The new style of drip edge does not require the shingle overhang, giving the roof a neater finished appearance, which I could appreciate. However, the other issues were still major, and uncalled for problems! The local supervisor promised to investigate and he promised to take care of all of them himself and within one week. Workers did show up to repair the ridge vents., but the supervisor was not among them. The crappy ridge vents were removed, cut-outs were made (I think) and new, nice quality ridge vents were installed, as I requested. Unfortunately, the crew left and none of the other problems were addressed.
We made more calls about the remaining work... it always took quite a while to hear back from the local supervisor. I also called the corporate office to explain why our bill was unpaid. Workers came and worked on the chimney region, applying a type of caulk or epoxy, but the work was quite sloppy. Fortunately, we have not had a leak, that we know of. The local supervisor called me in October, I believe, to ask if the leak was resolved and about paying our bill. I explained that the job was still not done due to the many exposed nail heads that still had not been sealed. I explained that we would be happy to pay as soon as all work was done. He said he would fix those nail heads right away and asked me to mail the check ASAP. I felt I could not pay until I can inspect it and know the job has been done adequately.
Herein lies the issue... The trust that I once had in this company was lost. How do I know that all vents were cut out? I've not yet had a chance to climb into my attic to inspect them all. How do I know that there are not more large sections of roof without any tar paper, unless I lift up shingles every few feet all along my roof, from side to side and top to bottom, and inspect? I wrote a letter to the president of the company, and he never saw fit to respond to me. The experience was characterized by poor workmanship, and the slow resolution of the problems we identified to the company . We were left with a lack of confidence in our roof and in the future durability of our roof. The major portion of my family's net worth is wrapped up in the value of my home, and it all sits directly under a Sherriff-Goslin installed roof!
We were very dissatisfied with our experience with Sherriff-Goslin. By the way, this is not local company in the Columbus, Ohio area. They are headquartered out of Battle Creek, MI.

2 years later
All of the aforementioned is true.
I am upgrading my ranking today from an “F” to an “A” due to the responsiveness of the new local management and my ongoing conversations with the home office.
Almost 18 months after our roof installation, we had an issue with water penetration into the house and staining of our stucco.
Sherriff-Goslin lived up to their 10-year guarantee that states “... if we have a problem, we make it right.”
It was refreshing to hear both local and corporate management acknowledge the short-comings of the previous customer service reps. How many of us have had companies hide or deflect less-than-stellar moments? A true test of a company and individual is how they react when mistakes are made. Sherriff-Goslin made things right in the end. While the process was not ideal, I am willing to recommend someone who “does the right thing” in the end.
"Sherriff-Goslin prides itself in Customer Service and taking care of the customers needs before, during and after the roofing project. The individual who was responsible for follow up and taking care of the issues mentioned in the attached report is no longer with Sherriff-Goslin Roofing. The current Manager, Kevin Havlin, is well aware of the importance of following through with commitments that are made during the estimating process, punctuality of both project managers and roofing crews and demands that out of all those employed by Sherriff-Goslin in Columbus, OH."
