Buyer beware! We had a failed sump pump that flooded our basement. We used Roto-Rooter for sump pump replacement and water mitigation. There were many issues, which led to our job taking much longer than it should have, as well as the final cost being excessively high. Once Roto-Rooter saw that it was an emergency, and that we had insurance, they really took advantage. The plumber who came out first, David R. quoted us a price for sump pump replacement, which he knew was not covered by our insurance. He gave us a high end price, but said that it wouldn't be that much, and that he would also give us a 10% senior discount on the total replacement job. He went to Lowes to purchase the sump pump that he recommended, and when he got back, he said the pump cost much more than he thought it would. He said that because it was much more, he had to shave money off of the labor charges just to get the cost down to MORE than his high estimate. Not only did he not give us the promised discount off his estimate, but he wouldn't take a valid coupon that I had printed from his Roto-Rooter website that day. He left us the box from the sump pump, so we looked online at Lowes, and saw that he charged us much more for the pump than what he paid. Our next issue was with the Roto-Rooter insurance person, Josh. He talked directly to our insurance rep to confirm that the water mitigation was covered. Of course they want to make sure they would get paid. Josh told us that he would "send a team of 2-3 people" to perform the clean-up. That never happened. No "team" was ever sent. We had just one person, Matthew, who is supposedly their mitigation expert. I told Matthew that we were promised 2-3 people, and he said that they didn't have enough staff to do that. So Matthew did everything himself, including getting rid of the water, tearing up and hauling out wet flooring, going through and moving our furniture and other damaged belongings, and bringing all of the equipment down to, and back out of the basement. This is not a job for one person. At one point, he was trying to carry a big piece of lumber down to the basement to make a table for drying our damaged items. He had so much trouble trying to angle it and get it down the stairs without damaging any of our walls or our furniture, that my 70 year old husband had to help him by moving our dining room furniture out of his way. Matthew commented several times throughout the week, that we should have had more fans for our size of basement, but Roto-Rooter did not have enough equipment available. Because we only had one person on the job, and not enough equipment for drying, the mitigation which we were told would take 3-4 days, took 7 days. And of course, the extended length of time ended up costing us an exhorbitant amount of money. Much more than it would have cost if we'd had 2-3 people as promised, and the appropriate equipment. In retrospect, I wish we would have talked to our insurance provider first. When we talked to our adjuster, he told us that Roto-Rooter is one of the top 3 most expensive companies they work with. Unfortunately, it was an emergency situation, and Roto-Rooter definitely saw us coming, and took full advantage. We're hoping that posting this review will help others in the same situation. We intend to post it wherever appropriate so we can warn as many potential customers as possible. This is an update after being contacted by Roto-Rooter after posting my review on Google. Brad told me that having one person vs. a team of 2-3 did not impact the time or cost of the job. He said Matthew denied having told me that they didn’t have enough staff or equipment to honor the time frame quoted. Brad told me that he couldn’t talk to the plumber, David R., because he was “in the field.” Why would Brad contact me without having spoken to the plumber, since the sump pump install was such a key part of our complaint? Even if Brad thought that I was completely wrong about everything, he never expressed any remorse that we were unhappy with the job, or with his company. We will never hire Roto-Rooter again.
