The service provided by Radon Systems was fantastic. I think that every homeowner feels somewhat tentative the first time they hire a company to provide a service; and often it isn't until after the job is completed that one knows the quality of the work -- even with the assistance of Angie's list. I bought a house in December of 2011, with a very high Radon reading; and thereupon hired a company for mitigation. Not only did this company not mitigate to an EPA acceptable level, but the owner was belligerent. At this point, Radon Systems took over. And fortunately, too, as the Radon monitor still showed that the addition to the house, which is built on a crawl space, had a very high reading, and that the main part of the house also still needed mitigation. Danny West, the owner of Radon Systems, and his team of two great guys, both courteous and knowledgeable, came out to the house at least half a dozen times, starting small (so to speak), then adding on as needed to get my house down to acceptable levels. Because Danny wanted to avoid using a larger fan, which can be noisy, he took the additional time to see if we could meet EPA standards with a smaller one. Even though, we eventually ended up with larger duct work and a larger fan, Radon Systems did not start there immediately and there was no charge for the additional work. Also, it turns out that the larger fan is not noisy, or if it is, I certainly do not notice the sound. Radon Systems did a good job and took the time necessary to do it. Even though my house was not easy in terms of mitigation, Radon Systems had the experience to mitigate successfully. As I now can compare the work of two Radon companies, I have a very good understanding of the process of mitigation. Danny's team uses a more expensive and more accurate monitor to track the daily reading and does not cut corners. It is obvious that Danny West believes in the importance of mitigation in terms of long-term health and, judging by my experience with him and with his crew, he makes sure that any house he mitigates meets EPA standards. From beginning to end of this project, it was clearly apparent to me that Danny West cares about his clients.
Description of Work: Mitigation of high levels of Radon in newly purchased home. There was sub-slab depressurization to crawl space under the addition of the house, as well as installation of a fan, tubing, etc. to mitigate dwelling to acceptable EPA guidelines.

Radon Systems was recommended and contacted by our real estate agent to perform radon mitigation in my mother's home. The realtor said that Radon Systems was the "go-to" company for radon mitigation in Columbus and I saw that the company had a good rating on Angie's List. Radon Systems installed a vent pipe with an exhaust fan in a central closet. The installation was done with very poor workmanship; the vent pipe wasn't even perpendicular to the floor! A second installation was necessary because the radon was not reduced to an acceptable level.. During the second installation in another closet, the crew struck a water line in the floor. In the contract, Dan West had inserted a handwritten statement that he would not be responsible for damage to the pipes in the floor. When the damage was done, we were upset because we had the original drawings that showed the location of the pipes in the floor and they were made available to the crew. My brother checked the drawings and they were accurate; if the crew had consulted the drawings and measured, the damage wouldn't have been done. Knowing there was a certain amount of risk, they should have used more caution and not used a large hole saw and just started drilling. While the plumbing repair was being done, a tech from Radon Systems said that his boss was going to take care of the cost of the repair. The next day, Dan West called my brother and said the tech had no right to say that RS would pay for the repair. He threatened to prevent the closing of the sale and put a lien on the property if we didn't pay the plumber's bill of approximately 575.00. The closing of the sale was to take place the next day; we felt that we had no choice but to pay. We would definitely not recommend doing business with Radon Systems.

Now the facts, No other radon mitigation company would touch this installation because of the water lines under the slab. Also, this was a slab on grade house so we only had limited access in two locations to place suction points. The furnace air handler was in the attic with very low and limited room to move around in the attic. Therefore, the fact that the pipe was not perfectly vertical was due the the duct work above. The only way I agreed to take on this project was to insert a disclaimer that we would not be responsible if we hit a water line which were virtually everywhere under the slab. This house was built in the 1950's and the drawing indicated the location of the water lines was drawn before the walls were built so the possibility existed that we could hit a water line and I would not be responsible if we did. I spent hours trying to find a plumber to repair the water lines but I never one indicated that we would pay for the repair and my technician told me that he did not indicate to anyone that I would pay for this repair. Had we not agreed to do this installation with the disclaimer, the house would not have been sold. The buyer who was in constant contact with me had no issues with the pipe runs nor the fact that the water line was hit. This was a vacant house and the seller placed notes around our system with negative comments on our work but I suggest that he was never in the attic to see why things had to be done this way. In the future, I will use my better judgment and stay away from this type of seller (not even his house) or another system installation like this one. The house went to closing buyer is happy with us and our work so what's the problem? Dan West

Radon Systems was prompt in scheduling a time to meet and assess the condition at my property. An estimate was provided at the time and the work scheduled less than a week after that. The workers were punctual and completed the work on the same day. Overall, it was a good experience and I would recommend them to others.

I called Radon Systems in the morning, described my problem, was given an estimate with Angie's List discount and went back to work thinking the service would be performed in a few weeks. To my pleasant surprise, when I arrived home my wife informed me that she thought she saw somebody working on the radon pump-fan on the outside of the home. Honestly, I thought they were just getting an estimate or idea about the job to be performed. But, when I went outside to check the situation out, I found an operational, brand new pump! They even fixed part of the exhaust pipe system that had broke-off years ago at no extra charge! Everything about Radon Systems from price, quality of work, and especially customer service exceeds expectations. I highly recommend this company and applaud them for the type of customer service you simply do not experience anymore.

Great overall experience...from A to Z...definitely recommend this company...good value also compared to competitors
Description of Work: Initial call was met with a knowledgable friendly lady. Scheduled an appointment over lunch to come over and take a look and provide recommendations and quote...the individual was punctual, professional and explained everything. Price was competitive. I wanted it done within a week, which they could not initially accomidate however she called back because of a cancellation and so it ended up working out! Installers were on time and called ahead to make sure we were there. Installers actually suggested a different position for the fan and everything was done professionally...I watched them do most of the work. Our radon post test showed a HUGE improvement...from 17 pre-installation to .7 post installation. I would definitely recommend this company!

I called to have my house tested for Radon. The lady who answered the phone was very nice and professional and the test was could have been scheduled pretty quickly. The only issue was the radon meter had to be dropped off at the house between the hours of 9-11 AM Monday through Friday. It could not be dropped off at any other time. As a result, I could not schedule the testing because I could not leave my work.

The only issue was the radon meter had to be dropped off at the house between the hours of 9-11 AM Monday through Friday. I asked if the meter could be dropped off at any other time and was clearly told no, it could not. Since I usually have to get to work by 8 AM, I could not schedule a service. If you have someone at home most days, this probably is not a big deal. From the point of view of a single working person, it's pretty rigid.

We place 15-20 radon tests per day and we have the city broken down into time zones. If we do not manage our services all we get done is driving around town and cannot keep our scheduled appointments. In cases like this I have placed monitors at 7:00 AM when necessary but we just cannot accommodate everyone at their requested times. Dan West

The technicians showed up at 12:50 when I thought they were due in at 12, but they were very friendly. Both the system installers and the electrician, who made sure to say goodbye before he left, were good to me and my house, careful to wear shoe booties and not make much of a mess. I would defienitely recommend them to anyone.

We finished our basement a few years ago, but never thought to do a radon test. I bought a test last year at Lowe's and it came out to 8.1 (4 is maximum recommended safe level). While the level itself didn't seem so bad and the basement is not used as a bedroom, I figured if when I go to sell the house someone will ask for a test. If I have to pay for the system, I might as well benefit from it. There aren't many radon companies on Angie's List with a history of good reviews except Radon Systems. So, I had them come out and give me a quote. The sales person showed up right on time and did a walk through. He already had the foundation layout from my house printed out and sketched up what they would do and quoted it. He was very up front and answered all my questions. Since we had our crawlspace used for storage, it took a while to get rid of what I could and move everything out. I called to see if they needed to requote (~10 months later) and they said they would still honor the original price (ask for the angie's list discount). Their schedule was very flexible about a 2 weeks out, so we set up the appt. The 2 technicians showed up right on time and were out in about 2.5 hours. They were pleasant and took their time to explain things to me before they started. We agreed on a layout that would not impact my basement layout too much. Soon after they left, the electrician showed up to wire the fan. He picked an interior outlet closes to the fan and just drilled a hole through the wall and ran conduit to the fan. He was also very personable. The test afterwards showed that the radon went from 8.1 to 0.7 and is guaranteed for 5 years.
Description of Work: Radon Systems installed a Radon Mitigation System in my house. This started with sealing off my sump pump. Then they drilled a 8" hole in my slab basement floor. They ran PVC pipe from the hole in the slab to the outside of my house. Next, they laid perforated PVC from my crawl space and then connected it to the other PVC. This was then run through the outer wall and connected to a fan that piped the air our above the house. They then sealed the crawl space with plastic. Finally, an electrician came and wired up the fan.

Radon Systems installed the system exactly as recommeded in their proposal. They arrived when the said they would. Durng the installation, they consulted with us on the exact routing to be used so that the pipes would not interfere with other pipes, clothes lines, storage cabinets and the like. The had a vacuum hose operating near the site of the holes to be drilled. There was no ambient dust in the air. Nearly all the materialfrom the drill was picked up by the hose-- the little that wasn't they cleaned up by hand. I would recommend them to my friends without hesitation.
Description of Work: They came to the house in February to measure the Radon level in the basement. This servce cost $150. The result was 11.2 pCi/l, considerably above the maximum safe level of 4.0. I then had them come back to carry out the mitigation. The pickup pipes were installed in the basement slab and through the basement wall in two places to pull out the Radon under two rooms that sit on slabs. The pipe manifold was routed outside where a blower applied the necessary vacuum and vented the exhaust above the roof line. Measurements were then made over a three-day period. The result was a measurement of 0.4, well below the maximum safe level.

The estimator clearly had done this before and was able to size up our unusual needs very quickly. He provided an estimate with a few options. Most of our discussion was around where we could place the venting pipes. He was willing to listen to my ideas and give me pros/cons. Interestingly, the actual installers who came the following week questioned why we decided the venting on 1 system. He provided a 3rd alternative, which was $100 cheaper and improved the pipe location, as well. It went very well overall. The only complaint is had is that they accidentally impeded the sump float on one of the system, causing the pump to run for a couple of days before we realized what happened. Other than that minor issue, they would be A on quality, too.

Everyone I worked with at Radon Systems was knowledgable and very professional. They scheduled things quickly and arrived on time. They finished the job quickly and cleaned up well. I am very happy with the job they did!
Description of Work: When I called for an estimate, they came out the next morning. Brad explained everything fully and informed me of the options I had, their service, and guarentee. He provided the estimate, in writing, before he left my house. 2 weeks later, I called to schedule. Stacy came out the following week. He also very good at explaining what was happening and showing me what they were going to do then explaining. They installed plastic sheeting and pipe in the crawl space and sealed up the sump pump. They tied the 2 together and vented it out by my guest bedroom. They were here about 2 hours. The electrician came a couple hours later to finish the job. He was also very professional and friendly. He was only there about 30 minutes. 2 days later, Lynn came out to pick up the monitoring unit. Our radon level went from 22 to 3. For people looking at radon systems.... People are concerned about the noise from the fan, but that is very quiet and consistent. The biggest noise is from the air movement through the pipes, especially in the crawl space.

Radon Systems told us our radon levels were 1.2 after having their system installed. But when we tested ourselves, twice, the actual level was closer to 5.0 in the bedrooms. The owner was very surprised that someone bothered to test the levels themselves post-mitigation and was defensive and obnoxious. We have a newborn in the house and it took him a month to come and remediate the system, after explaining that he would come or we would see him in court. Even then they could not get the levels lower than 3.6. I'm not saying this guy is a fraud, but you might want to check the levels yourself instead of trusting this guy.

Response from Radon Systems
Now the facts, This homeowner called my office stating her system quit. I returned her call when I got back in the office and she immediately told me that her internet purchased $125.00 radon detector was going off. Then I was threatened with a bad report on Angie's list. I suggested to her that because of the quality issues with the monitor that she purchased over the internet and is not approved to be used in Ohio by the Ohio Department of Health I suggested to her that she go buy a $20.00 test kit from Home Depot and check her device against the one she purchased. Out radon monitors are $3500.00 each so if the $125.00 was accurate and approved, we would be using it. She got angry when I suggested this to her at which time I also recommended that she have a state licensed radon tester conduct a test for her but the cost would run about $150.00. We had already conducted the radon test after the system was installed and found the post mitigation radon levels to be well below the acceptable limit. I was then threatened with a law suit if I refused to work on her system. I stated to her that her radon system was guaranteed and if her independent test showed radon levels elevated we would continue to work with her system under the radon warranty. She was beligerent during the whole conversation and did not want to hear anything I was saying. I again called her back later that afternoon to get additional information on her radon system and have yet to get a returned call from her. I receive many service calls during the day and most of these can be troubleshooted over the phone but she expected us to drop everything and run out to her house and see what is going on and conduct another radon test at no charge. When you work with as many homeowners as we do, you are eventually going to find one that is difficult to please. Dan West

I would hire them again in a heart beat. They took the time to answer all our questions. All of their employees were terrific. They were clean, neat and prompt. A++
Description of Work: We had two of our pets diagnosed with cancer in the last six months. We began to look for environmental causes for these illnesses. We had never tested our new home for radon. We brought in this company to test and they performed a 24 hour diagnostic with their computers monitoring the indoor air quality. The cost was $150. The house remained closed (air conditioning on) during this time. We tested an average of 7.5, and the EPA recommends a reading under 4. They came out the very next day and did an exploration of the home, and gave us a quote of $1475. We hired Radon Systems to come out and do radon mitigation. They came out the following day and spent from 9 am till 5 pm. They arrived promptly. They capped the sump pump and ran pvc piping all under the floor in our basement and crawl space and vented the radon off the back of the house (on the roof). They put in the largest fan possible. They also lined all of the crawl space (we have extensive crawl space that runs the length of our 2300 square feet) with heavy gauge plastic, sealing it to the walls. Then they placed the monitoring computers back in the house and monitored the air quality over the weekend. Our reading today was 1.1, well below the EPA required amount.

For the most part everything went pretty well. They were punctual and polite, the price was fair and work went well overall. The crew leader was probably the best crewleader out of all the service companies I hired to work on the house I bought last fall. He did a great job showing me the system after they completed work and the system is working great. They were close to being perfect but.... They were training a new guy who took a Radon Mitigation class that the owner of Radon Systems apparently teaches. He drove seperately and parked behind me in the driveway. I asked him to move his car because I'll be taking my son to school in a few minutes. Of course, when I'm ready to leave the car was still behind me and I had to walk around the house looking for the guy. I find him and he moves his car. As soon as I pull out he pulls into my spot. When I got back home I had to park in the street and unload my car from their. Why is the guy that is getting trained in my house, by a company I'm paying, parking in my spot? It's one thing if he was working out of the vehicle like the Radon Systems truck but he was just their observing. The other thing that really bothered me is I caught one of the workers going through my kitchen cabinets like it was his house. I asked what he was doing and he said he was looking for dish soap because my hand soap wouldn't clean as well. He was washing his grubby hands over my dishes and going through my cabinets. I should have told him to get the h*** out of my house and regret not doing so.

Well done. Professional crew. Would highly recommend Radon Systems. They are a bit higher on price than others I had quoted but they do crawl spaces (heavy plastic glued to walls with piping underneath) and came highly recommended.
Description of Work: Complete radon reduction system installed, including crawl space and sump pump cover.
