Odd Jobs Handyman Service & Home Improvements

Our house was built in 1920 and it was last remodeled in the 80's. We were looking to remove carpet, take down a wall between the kitchen and dining room and refinish our hardwood floors. David Miller with Odd Job was recommended to us by our real estate agent and their positive review showed. He was prompt and accurate with his estimates and was always involved in all phases of the project. I would suggest being very detailed with your requirements as you will not see an itemized contract, but David follows through with the agreed scope of the project. The Odd Jobs team paid close attention to detail and always cleaned up after the day’s work. We were always impressed with how professional the crew was at each stage of the project. We had multiple contacts that were willing to answer questions, address concerns, and be flexible with the changing needs of the renovation. The timeline did stretch beyond what was originally quoted, but we were satisfied with the quality of work and overall aesthetic of the space. We had a great experience with Odd Jobs and would certainly use them again for other work on our home.

Always Exceptional

The initial quoted price from a walk-through seemed high, but we discussed that the quote represented worst case scenario (re-wiring to two floors) and we were excited about the opportunity to have the work done in a timely manner with closing for fire safety reasons, etc. When the job was started it was seemingly discovered the grounding issue could be fixed at each outlet respectively (at least that's what we were told) and therefore the amount of work required was far less than originally speculated. The owner was very resistant to re-discuss the quoted price to reflect the seemingly more straight forward job. Ultimately he agreed to lower the price somewhat. In addition, we asked for a light bulb socket to be replaced in the basement that had a broke bulb in it. After the socket was replaced, there was no means of turning it on except screwing/unscrewing the bulb. When asked why we did not have a string or switch they responded "because we didn't specify that". We were under the impression it was still an over charge so we sought two separate opinions from BBB. The first of the two evaluations revealed that in fact the majority of the outlets were still un-grounded, and the remainder of the work was not to code (exposed wires, etc.). Furthermore, it was uncovered that OJ does not have a license to perform electrical work (only GC and HIC; although both electrical and plumbing are advertised on their website) and permits were not pulled to complete the work. We contacted them to discuss a refund to cover the services to have the electrical work done correctly and up to code - they have declined to discuss this further.

Odd Jobs Handyman did a good job for me and my family.

The name of the project manager at the company was Paul and he was very kind and proactively caring of me and my family.

Project speed and management was appropriate and though the entire project took more than 3 weeks, I could balance between the project and family time.

Especially, my wife was sick throughout the project and they showed very detailed and nice care, when I could not give them any further details.

When I needed to requests additional things to do along the projects, the company was very flexible and accommodating my new requests reasonably.

I called Odd Jobs about doing my tile backsplash and hanging up some ceiling fans and lights. They responded the same day I called and even sent a guy over to give the estimate. He came unprepared, he forgot his measuring tape so we had to lend him ours. He also wore his shoes in our brand new house. The estimate he gave us was very high, and then the boss called and told me the estimate was incorrect. I assumed he was going to say the estimate was too high, but he ended up saying that the estimates were switched around, so it would've been the same price. They tried calling me a couple other times to see if I was ready for them to do the job, but I found someone else to do the work who took their shoes off, brought a measuring tape, and was very polite.

I called Davyd on a recommendation at a lighting store, when we believed that we needed a box replaced when a fan had fallen and we also had terrible water pressure and wanted to see if they could take a look and give us a quote on how much it would be to fix it. Davyd said that he would send out one of his workers (or contractors, I'm not sure) to look at both issues. I told him that I would be out in the morning and to have the person call prior to coming to make sure we were home. I had just gotten home a few minutes before I heard a knock at our door, and it was the person, who did not call before. I showed him what needed done, and he was very nice, took photos, and wrote down all that we requested a quote for, and we added a few additional items to get quotes on those as well. We were told that we would be getting a quote in a few days, that went by and I called Davyd who assured me that we would get a quote the next morning by 8:00 AM. At 10:00 AM, I emailed him and he would have his secretary send it over. When we received the quote, it was odd, because the work for the fan was really high and the plumbing was really low, so I called him and he explained that the numbers were reversed, and I thought that was fair, and told him to send me the revised quote and then we could talk about timing. I asked him to give me another quote because he said that they were going to just cut out where the shut-off's on the plumbing was and replace with new pipe, and I said that I would rather have the pipes from the main water shut off to the elbows going up to the main house replaced and he said that they wouldn't do that, that they would start with this and go from there. We didn't hear back. I called again, and he was on vacation, but he called and left a message saying that one of the higher-ups in the cancelled the quote because there were too many variables and they didn't want to get into a situation that they would be working at a loss because the quote was too low (even though I asked for a revised quote), then he gave a few names of contractors that might do the job. Fair enough on that, but still was disappointed in the lack of communication and the bungled quote. He mentioned that they would still come out and do the fan, but that was the last time I heard anything from them. I finally contacted a different company, and it turned out that the box was fine, it was just the fan brace that broke, so it was really nothing, but I would have though that the contractor who came out to look could have seen that was all it was and let me know at that, since it took the guy that did the job a second to look and say the box is fine, it just the brace and it was even before any work was started. All in all, very poor communication and I cannot comment on the quality of the work since I was unable to get anything done through them. I found it to be very unprofessional. If it was too big of a job, he should have said it right away and I would have respected that, but giving a quote saying he couldn't do it was terrible.

Everyone in the company went out of their way to respond to my needs, even though my projects were much smaller than those they typically engage in. They were fast, thorough, easy to work with, and their work is outstanding. They were very flexible and responded immediately to any small changes I asked them make. They have unfailing attention to detail and still complete everything on schedule. I am delighted to recommend Odd Jobs Handyman Service; they are a pleasure to work and I hope to work with them many more times in the future.
