He still has a key to our house. He never returned our keys. If I see his little sign in anybody's yard, I will knock on their door and tell them not to use this provider. I will never use him again.
The rear of the home had to be re-sided after a kitchen remodelling project. Part of this project involved installing a sliding patio door and removing a traditional swing door. As part of this I agreed to purchase 1 box (2 squares) of aluminum siding to patch in the location where the single door was removed. This should not have been necessary. Norm should have had enough scrap from the installation of the sliding glass door, that if carefully removed could have been used to patch in place of the other door. But I went along with the small purchase of siding as I was just happy that the old door would be removed and the 1 box of siding was not too terribly expensive.
The problem began when Norm opened the box of siding that he purchased and discovered that it was 4 inch siding and that the siding on the rest of the home was 3.75 inches (problem 1). Since Norm knew he had a box of siding available, the siding around the sliding glass door was not removed carefully and he had already scrapped the siding taken off of the house (problem 2). Norm took some responsibility for the problem and agreed to hang the siding and paint it at no cost due to his error. Because of this and because of my anxiousness to get this project done, I agreed to purchase the materials to replace all of the siding on this wall of the home. I purchased 4 more boxes (8 squares) of aluminum siding for this project. That day Norm began to remove the siding on my home, and it was over three weeks until he returned to hang the new siding that was purchased. During this time the house looked horrible as most of the siding was removed while we waited for Norm to return.
Once the new siding arrived Norm hired three individuals to hang the aluminum siding and I was happy the job would finally be completed. However when I arrived home from work that day I immediately noticed that the siding was severely dented (problem 3). I called Norm and he took responsibility for the problem. Norm stated that the individuals who hung the siding had never handled aluminum siding before and did not know what they were doing. These individuals were hitting this siding with their hands and put their ladders on it during the installation. Norm stated that I had siding leftover from the purchase and he would return to replace the dented pieces of siding. I was sceptical of this solution as there were a number of dented pieces of siding and I wondered how he could have so much extra siding left over.
It was another 32 days before Norm returned to repair the damaged siding. During this lapse of time Norm became unresponsive. He stopped answering my phone calls and failed to return any voicemails. Norm eventually arrived to repair the siding and left for the day without communicating with me. I arrived home from work that day and it was obvious that he "tried" to replace some pieces of siding but he discovered that this was much more difficult than he expected. The pieces that were replaced did not look any better than before (problem 4). There were nails coming out of the replaced pieces and it appeared that he had tried to caulk some pieces in place. I attempted to reach Norm, but he did not answer and did not return my voicemail.
Four days later, I returned home from being out of town for a family member's funeral. I was surprised to see that the siding had been painted. And yes, once again, it looked extremely worse than it did before (problem 5). When painting the siding Norm's workers once again put their ladders all over the siding and dented it even more. I called Norm and he surprisingly answered his phone. I told him that the siding was damaged and asked him why he painted it. He told me that "this is the best you are going to get" and that he can't do any better (problem 6). He hung up on me and told me he could not deal with me right now.
Two days later Norm called me back first thing in the morning and told me that he would repair the siding. Three days later, two siding sub-contractors arrived to replace the severely dented siding. When discussing issues with the siding contractors they advised that Norm used the wrong type of nails on the siding and these nails would deteriorate which will cause the siding to fail prematurely (problem 7). After arriving home from work after the dented siding was replaced, I noticed that that all of the siding was wavy (problem 8). The next day I called the siding contractors and the siding salesman. They both stated that this is a problem when tying into existing siding installations and that any imperfection in an aluminum siding installation can cause the whole installation to look wavy. Both individuals stated that the proper procedure in a case like this should have been to replace the entire wall of siding.
After collecting this information, I called Norm to advise him of the problem. Norm disagrees with this explanation and blames the wavy siding on the level and squareness of the outside wall of the home. Norm agrees to meet with me at my home to discuss. I waited for Norm to arrive at my home to discuss the issue and he never showed up (problem 9). I called an independent consultant to discuss Norm's latest explanation of the wavy siding and this individual stated that the waviness was caused by tying in to a poor installation and that even if there was a problem with the outside wall of the home, people that know what they are doing with aluminum siding can compensate for such an issue.
I attempted to contact Norm a few more times with no luck. He continued to ignore my phone calls and failed to return my voicemails. I decided to take pictures of the siding and write a letter to Norm stating that I wanted a refund. I dropped the letter and pictures off at his business address. Finally I received a return phone call from Norm. He denied that there was anything wrong with the siding and in the same breath blamed the installers. At this point he denied responsibility saying that there was no contract for the siding installation and I would have to contact the siding contractors myself, even though Norm Williams was the general contractor. At this point he hung up on me and told me to do what I have to do (problem 10).
At this point I have exhausted all possibilities of working this out with him 1 on 1. I would like my money for the siding to be refunded to resolve this issue. I am left with a damaged product, a half painted home, and the possibility that my home would sustain further damage due to the poor installation.
"Please accept this as our response to the member’s allegations. We have reviewed the allegations and deny their accuracy. The first amendment permits freedom of speech, but when actionable words stipulate falsity it creates issues of defamation and slander of a person’s good name and business, which is how we view this complaint. Our construction firm was started in 1985 and in the last 27 years this is the only written complaint published against us with Angie’s List, which should speak volumes for our craftsmanship, business conduct and integrity. The members also wrote a complaint to the Ohio Attorney General’s office. The state completed a full investigation and actually came out to the homeowner’s property. The State found no ground for the allegations and the complaint was closed. Our company remodeled the homeowner’s kitchen/dining room, entryway and half bath in 2011. We have copies of posted Facebook comments complimenting our work to their friends. There is no mention of the excellent full kitchen remodel in this complaint. In the process of this remodel the member desired to close off a back door and replace an opening with a sliding glass door leading from the kitchen to the backyard. In doing this it would require replacement of the outdoor siding on the back of the home. The members have a 40 year old home built in 1971 which has original 3 ¾ “ aluminum siding. Aluminum siding is very obsolete in new or remodeled homes. This width is no longer made. Aluminum siding manufactured today is very thin due to cost. Most homeowners elect to use vinyl, but the members refused as they had no funds to complete the entire home and this it would not have matched. Our company replaced the entire back of the home with 4” wide aluminum. The siding was purchased through APCO Siding and installed by Kenneth Love who has been working for APCO siding for over 30 years. There were no complaints or issues with the work until it came time to pay for the additional material. Unfortunately, the homeowners over extended their finances and upon completion of the work refused to pay for the cost of the material and then filed this complaint in effort to persuade our company to not collect a balance due. Our company did NOT charge the members for the labor or installation of the aluminum siding only for the material. We are requesting Angie’s List post our response on their internet site like they posted the complaint. Thank you, Norm Williams Norm Williams Remodeling"
