General Remodeling
Hard pass. Claimed he could do work that he was not able to do. Asked for an advance ahead of project completion. Never completed the project written in our contract. We had to hire other contractors to finish the work.

Chimney Repair
They were pretty much the only ones that I talked to do the repair. It was a reasonable amount of money. The only down side was that it was a really busy time of the year for them around that time. It took almost a month to get them to do the job. It was partially not their fault because it kept raining and they couldn't do the repairs when the stucco was wet. I had another quote which was pretty much double of their price. When they did come out to work, they were punctual.

Kitchen and Bath Remodeling
Contractor stated work would be completed in three to four days. On the second day, contractor requested full payment as he was to complete work the following day. Payment was made, but the contractor never returned. Hughes stated he had experience installing hundreds of showers, but when he suggested surrounding the shower with wood trim, I was surprised. I realized he really didn't have the experience he stated.
On the first day he arrived without tools. I had to lend him my own tools so he could begin work. When installing the shower door frame, he cut the frame too short, causing me to have to order a new frame.
After six weeks of contacting him every week asking when he would complete the work, he stated he had other customers paying him more and I would have to wait. Finally after six weeks, he sub-contracted the work to another contractor.
Since I purchased wood and a new shower door frame, I am now out $130. On October 28, 2011, I contacted him and requested payment. He stated he would not pay me and hung up.
The sub-contractor did complete the work to my satisfaction. However, Dan Hughes Construction will receive no additional business from me and I would suggest you think twice before hiring this company.

Gutter Repair and Replacement
All phone calls were promptly returned by Dan Hughes; he always answered my questions and was always thorough. Gary came to measure and explain the work to be done. He was on time, detail oriented and friendly. In a couple of days I received an estimate. I later signed a professional work order. Again Gary was on time to do the work. He removed a piece of the coil because he wanted to show me exactly how it fit and the shape of the coil. The seams and corners appear to be tight. I am very pleased with the work. Also when I had to back out of the driveway his truck was blocking my view; he made sure traffic was clear before I backed out.

Dan was supposed to get back to me but never did. I found a grateful high school kid who helped me get the top soil and spread it. I talked with an arborist about clipping the tree root that was causing paver bulge and he felt it was okay to clip the root. Dan had a problem with this task. I'll deal with the tree root later.
A contractor should have the decency to tell a customer that he is not going to submit a bid. That enables the customer to move forward and fine someone else. This is unprofessional behavior and most likely is an indication that the contractor would not have done a good job if he chose to do the work. In the end, Dan's option to not do the work was the best.

He came to give me the estimate, and arrived on time. He also arrived on time for all of the work I have had him do.

Called for an ESTIMATE for a roof leak. Mr. Hughes came out, went up on the roof for a closer look, cut about 1 inch off of 5 shingles, offered to clean out our gutter. When he was doen with the FREE ESTIMATE, he said what he did would cost us $85. Dumbfounded, we paid him, but the professionalism was deplorable. The shingle cutting he said might fix the leak, but it never did. Also he bent the gutter too with the ladder.

He generally does remodeling, roofing and concrete. He is licensed to dipose of hazardous materials as well. This was the first time I had used his services. Everything went swimmingly. He is very trustworthy, thorough and did a good job.

HE DID IT FOR HALF THE PRICE OF OTHER ESTIMATES. THE LEAK WAS ACTUALLY FIXED THIS TIME. OTHER COMPANIES HAD TO COME BACK TWICE AND IT WAS STILL NOT FIXED. OTHER COMPANIES QUOTED ME AROUND $800.
