After he was done, it was late and I was putting my children to bed so I paid him his cash and would await the tree quote. The next morning the pruning job was barely done. He then wanted $400 up front to remove the tree as he said he needed supplies and to pay his tree guy up front $150. I got suspicious at this point. I told him I would pay after he cut it down. He said okay. I asked about this negative review and he claimed it was his old business partner trying to screw him. 3 days later he had a couple show up to do the tree job, but they looked at the tree and said it was too big.
We then began to talk to our neighbors about their experience. Every neighbor had the same story. He aske for cash only, did some work but not what they were expecting, and he got money up front to do work that he wasn't able to personally offer. Then we started to do some research. It appears he's not licensed or bonded to do this work. He's legally not allowed to fertilize trees so whether he did it illegally or whether he just put down water and acted like it was fertilizer we will never know.
He used each neighbors name as a referral for the next neighbor. I was just at the "Smiths" house doing work for them and I noticed in your yard, etc. etc. He was making it seem like we all were very happy with his service. He's taken from $400 to $1400 per neighbor from our neighborhood.
Then a couple homeowners confronted him on his licenses and bonded status and he claimed he had to go get them. The homeowner then demanded money back for services he said he provided but didn't. Instead of asking how to fix the problem, he and his buddy literally ran to their car, ripped the license plate off of their SUV and sped out of the neighborhood as fast as possible.
Scam artist! But he hasn't heard the last from this neighborhood. Dept. of Agriculture, Ohio Attorney General Office, IRS. Good Luck Tom.
He's a short stocky guy with "Melanie" tatooed on his left ring finger.
