Columbus Worthington Air

I purchased a "Big Deal" from Worthington Air to tune-up and check my five year old furnace before the weather got too cold. I was contacted by the provider to set up an appointment almost immediately. I was pleasantly surprised that I could get an appointment on the Sunday following Christmas! The technician was on time, very friendly, efficient (he was done in one hour) and I got the peace of mind that my furnace would function properly through next year. I am very happy with this service!

I discovered that the heat was not working around 7:50pm on a Wednesday night. I called a competitor first, and was told that someone would call me back, but 50 minutes later no one had called, so I checked Angie's List (thank you Angie!) and called Columbus/Worthington Air. A technician from Columbus/Worthington Air called me back in less than 5 minutes. He said that he had two other jobs before me, explained that there was an $84 per hour service charge, and asked if I still wanted someone to come out. I said, "Yes" because the temperatures were going to be near zero over night, and the hourly rate seemed reasonable. About an hour later, the repairman showed up. He said that he thought that I needed a new ignitor because he wasn't getting any reading on his meter, and that they retailed for $230. Like many other repairmen in the past, he suggested that I might want to just get a new furnace since this one was old and a bottom of the line furnace. He said that he could have a salesman come out tonight to talk to me rather than continuing to pay for repairs for an old furnace. I opted to repair the furnace now, so that I could have some time to shop for a new furnace without feeling pressured to buy one at an inflated price because of an immediate need. The repairman was very friendly and apologetic about the price of the repair. In total, the cost breakdown was $230 for the ignitor, $84 for a trip charge (not a per hour charge-- maybe I misunderstood the technician on the phone), and $96 for one hour of labor. I have had the flame sensor (which is part of the ignitor) replaced several times in prior years and spent about $200 in total for the repair and labor. It looks as though you can purchase ignitors online for $25-$50 retail, so $230 is a steep mark-up if that's correct. Still, I was happy that Columbus/Worthington Air was so responsive and quick to come out late at night to fix my furnace. (The other company never called me back.) I am rating the service as excellent, and bumping them down on the price. I probably will call them to give me an estimate on a new furnace because this one is pretty old, but I plan to get some other bids as well.

I've been using CWA for years and have always had fantastic experiences. But this time things did not go so well. Three issues that left me disappointed: 1. When I bought the Big Deal on a Sunday morning, I was surprised to receive an email from someone in the office. So we went ahead and set the schedule for Friday Dec 26. That was a day off for me so a perfect time to have them out. I requested the first appointment in the morning and was told the technician would arrive around 8:30am. At around 9am on the 26th I still had not seen anyone, so I called CWA and was told that my appointment was actually on their schedule for Monday Dec 29 - clearly not what we had discussed. They were able to get a technician out on Saturday Dec 27 so I appreciated that, but would have liked for the schedule not to have been screwed up in the first place. 2. On the 27th the technician arrived on time and promptly went to work, and I assume he did what I paid them to do. As he was finishing up he brought me my air filter and said it looked pretty clean and that I didn't really need to change it yet. I replace the filter every year, since we have lots of dust and two cats. I actually replaced the filter today, and the difference between the new and old was clear - it definitely needed to be replaced. I'm not sure why he would have told me not to bother. 3. I noticed a couple days ago that the cover for the humidifier was off, and sitting on a shelf near the furnace. So for a couple weeks we were drawing basement air into the humidifier duct, which is probably not an issue. What is a problem is when the technician does not put all the pieces back in place as they should be. I can only assume that everything else with the furnace was reassembled properly, and the work was done competently beyond what I saw. UPDATE 1/14/15: I spoke with Bobby who called me to follow up on my report and discuss the service failures. He was genuinely interested in learning more about the issues and sincerely apologized and promised to address each of the issues with his team.

The provider responded quickly, and without overtime charges on a Sunday, to our request for a review of furnace to determine whether we would fix it or replace it. The sales consultant came out the same day to help with our options. We chose to replace both furnace and air but did not feel pressured to do so. The price was right. The work was done two days later based on our schedule.

He diagnosed the problem and made the repair within the time he calculated. All supplies were on his truck so we did not have to wait for another service visit. They were very good. They were very polite and professional. They showed us what was what wrong with the furnace. They were trying to sell us a furnace but their prices were extremely high.

I had 3 different companies out for the estimate. Columbus Worthington Air is the one that I went with. They were good. They came out promptly for the estimate and got the work scheduled within a few days. It took about the same amount of time they said it would, they said about half a day. They were professional and didn't leave a mess or anything. They let me know what they were doing. The particular unit that they sold me, I had dome some research on my end to see what the different brands were and the different kinds. They were able to give me the one that was a little bit more powerful than the other companies were offering and a little more efficient. They were a little bit high for the price.

Went very well, tech was on time and knowledgeable. He actually told me he went to work at CWA because, unlike his previous company, they did NOT pressure him to "manufacture problems" with the HVAC system to sell parts or additional services; a refreshing attitude. We'll explore a service contract with them.

They performed all of the checks of required to make sure the furnace stayed in operation. We knew from last fall's visit that we needed a new surface ignitor. The technician replaced it in no time. Our system is 15 years old and still runs great with the regular maintenance. The technician was professional and didn't push me into any direction for additional work given the age of our system. Their office called me within 30 minutes of his arrival to let me know he is on his way. We have been very pleased with their services and will definitely have them back into our home.

The technician, Cody, spent about 30-45 minutes inspecting my 10-year old furnace. He was thorough, polite, and professional. When finished, he said my furnace was fine and reminded me to check the filter periodically and change at the proper intervals. He didn't try to sell me other services.

abelHere is the letter I sent to the company I purchased a coupon for your furnace clean-up, tuning etc on Tuesday, Nov 22 for a friend who is a disabled veteran. He called and arranged to have someone from Columbus Worthington Air come out today. Ryan came out and checked out the old furnace and determined there was not a carbon monoxide leak as Ernest (the veteran) suspected. However, because of Ernest's concern and Ryan's concern for his safety he called headquarters and they approved him coming back to get some more sophisticated equipment and coming back to recheck. Due to some problems in not having the new equipment calibrated, Justin came over as well and they thoroughly checked the very old furnace and did not find a leak. However, in their work they discovered the old water heater was leaking carbon monoxide. Justin and Ryan recommended what to do, gave FANTASTIC service and left with a very satisfied customer. They did not charge extra for the return visit. I just want to thank your company and hope that the appropriate folks are told about the great service from Ryan and Justin. Please rest assured when my furnace needs a check up or a friend asks for a referral, I will strongly recommend Columbus Worthington Air. Many companies do not give good customer service but you certainly do From a very satisfied customer.

They were very good, they were punctual. They did a good job. After they left, I realized that I kind of paid twice. Overall, the guy was thorough, punctual and we were pleased. I just probably wouldn't buy a deal next time.

From scheduling to completion, it was handled well. I have used other HVAC companies in the past and this one is a good one I will consider when time to replace my equipment.
