From the very beginning, Andy was the ultimate professional. He willingly made time to meet with the ceramic artist at our condo to look at the piece and discuss how it could best be installed with the backsplash. Once the artistic piece was completed, Andy fit the installation into his busy schedule, doing the basic installation on a Saturday, grouting on Sunday and coming back earlier in the week afterwards to seal the tile and grout. His construction knowledge and experience was evident in his approach to installing the artistic component. He was punctual and very easy to work with. He listened well and took our thoughts and ideas into consideration throughout the project. I will definitely consider using Andy again for any future projects.
I met Andy in the next day or so and was impressed with his knowledge and experience. He felt the job was smaller than previously thought since we realized a portion of the wall could not be taken out due to a chimney and an HVAC vent, but they didn't quantify how much less (I should have asked). While the initial work to get the beam and post up over the next few days, it seemed they got busy elsewhere (which I know is common) and took a few days to get back to finish the drywall and do finish carpentry on the post. It took even longer, though, to get them to finish the flooring area where the wall had been.
Andy's original idea was to do a wood and quot;inlayand quot; in the floor area, which he had done on previous projects. That was what I had in mind. Later, he decided it best to simply use some of the hardwood flooring from the adjacent closet to fill in the gaps. We went back and forth on it. I finally agreed to that, figuring it would look better they way he described things. It turns out he had two of his guys do it and while it looks okay, there were enough inconsistent gaps I now wish we had stuck to the original plan.
Andy also asked if I wanted him to redo the moulding in the area. I said yes, but it never got done. I'd also asked him to mud some drywall repairs I'd done on nearby walls, which he agreed to, but it never got done nor did I get offered a price quote (I was trusting up to this point). I'd added in a third drywall area in the kitchen, but that never got done either, being told that he didn't think it was ready yet. Needless to say, we had some communcation issues.
After that point, I got a call from his dad wanting final payment of $2000 (an additional $500 off for the and quot;smaller workand quot;) and said he'd give me the keys back. No explanation, no reasons why they wouldn't complete the other work they agreed upon. This was on 9/27, over a month from when we'd started. Well, I figured I'd had enough, so I relunctantly paid the amount he asked, now wishing I'd gotten a firmer price after having met Andy who saw the smaller wall area. Perhaps it's still a good price, I really don't know. But if I add up all the time they were there working, it seems pretty high to me, especially since I'd done all the messy and laborious demo work. Had it been a pristine job with a nice looking flooring and moulding, etc. Especially had they done the drywall mudding for me, it would have felt better.
Needless to say, it may just be my innocence over what these things cost (they were the first I could get out to the property; a good sign that contractors are busy these days), so the price may indeed be in-range. And perhaps since this was a small job compared to others they may have had could have been a factor. But the lack of communication, taking a month do do what has been done this far, and failure to do what was promised and then how things ended. Well, I just hope the drywall contractor I now have lined up to do the needed work will end up being a better experience. Andy and his guys were nice to deal and they do pretty good work, otherwise. I'll also mention that I got the dad to agree to let me load up his trailer with more demo rubble that needed to go and he did take it away for me.
