Situation: City of Columbus issued water shutoff deadline in response to water pressure drop test
Process: I called several different plumbing contractors, met them in person, and discussed repair options. In term of cost, Anderson Gas & Water Leak Service Inc (AGWLS) was somewhere in the mid to high range with material cost accounted. However, they spoke very direct about what needs to be done without resorting to fear uncertainty doubt language, which in and of itself is insulting to any customer. One contractor who I didn't select offered a very long-winded solution that involves extra cost, material and extra complexity with no concern for the client's best interest. AGWLS is a two men team, with most of the hard labor performed by Anderson's younger sidekick. Anderson, himself, is a tad slow to respond to email and electronic communication unless it is in regards to payment request. As for the quality of work, I'm satisfied. My house wasn't damaged and no great amount of dust or mess was generated.
As with any contractor, have all work performed in writing, line item by line item. If it is not in writing, it will not be done. Change order is expensive.

I called Anderson and received an estimate on the phone and was told they could be there that afternoon.  I was called back and informed they were on the way and did I want their service.  The leak was small and hard to find.  After five hours and numerous fitting replacements, the price I was charged was only $20 above the estimate.  I could not have purchased the fittings, unions, etc. we used for $20.  It was a good repair for an extremely fair price.

Jason  pressure tested the lines. He went to great pains to try to find the problem. The problem was found but access to a faulty valve would have involved damaging  flooring. So newlines to appliances were run.

It went great! From the time I spoke with Dave Anderson on the phone until Jason finished the repairs the experience was very professional. I called Dave around 7pm at night and he returned my call very quickly. Dave quoted me $150-220 over the phone and my bill was exactly $150.00. Jason came out the next day and was on site sooner than expected (which was great). Jason went out of his way to explain to me what he was doing at all times, and most importantly he explained to me why the different lines were leaking. Jason was able to stop all leaks in a very quick manner. Between Jason and Dave I would definitely use this company again.

Two guys showed up on time to dig the trench. They unloaded the ditch witch and dug the trench in less than 30 minutes. They were polite and efficient. However, they didn't quite follow the pipe and I had to spend about an hour re-digging half of the trench. Also, once on site, they asked me if I had checked with the power company about buried power lines and I had not thought to do that. It would have been nice if, when I scheduled the ditch digging, the person scheduling the service mention the importance of checking with the power company.

Dave's workers showed up as scheduled, to tackle the job on a winter day. They did not seem to mind me watching the whole process and asking questions along the way. They proceeded slowly as not to create any new problems. Within a couple hours, the work was done - including installing a new main shut-off valve as required by the gas company. Before leaving, our gas lines were pressure tested - inside and out. All was well. Two previous companies had looked at this simple job and were skittish about tackling it. One seemed unsure about exactly how to do it and the other wanted to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Dave was thoroughly responsive to all my questions and concerns, and sensitive to time constraints as well. His men were polite and competent. We would use them again. FINAL NOTE: IF our pipe had to be relined, which it did not, his cost would have been a few hundred dollars LESS than the other two companies I brought in for estimates.

CONTACTED COMPANY FOR AN ESTIMATE; THEY ARRIVED PROMPTLY. DID NOT USE THEM, AS THE ESTIMATE WAS THREE TIMES AS EXPENSIVE AS THE COMPANY WE DID END UP USING.
Response from ANDERSON GAS & WATER LEAK SERVICE INC

"WE ARE TROUBLED TO HEAR THIS REPORT. EVERY EFFORT IS MADE TO MAINTAIN A PROFESSIONAL ATMOSPHERE FOR OUR CUSTOMERS AND EMPLOYEES. WE ARE FULLY LICENSED, BONDED AND INSURED. OUR EMPLOYEES ARE DOT CERTIFIED AND TRAIN VERY HARD. WE CONDUCT DRUG TESTING ON ALL EMPLOYEES TO INSURE QUALITY OF SERVICE. WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS MEAN? WE PROVIDE PREMIUM SERVICE WITH PREMIUM PEOPLE. ADDITIONALLY, WE ONLY HIRE SERVICE TECHNICIANS WITH EXPERIENCE. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH PREMIUM SERVICE. I WOULD BE INTERESTED TO KNOW IF THE CONTRACTOR THE MEMBER HIRED WAS DOT CERTIFIED. ANY CONTRACTOR WORKING ON NATURAL GAS IS REQUIRED TO BE DOT CERTIFIED. DID THEY DO THE WORK RIGHT? IF THE WORK WASN''T COMPLETED TO CODE... IT COULD TAKE YEARS TO SHOW SIGNS OF LEAKAGE. WILL THEY BE THERE TO MAKE IT RIGHT IF THEY DIDN''T? BE AWARE: YOU MAY GET THE WORK DONE FOR A THIRD OF THE PRICE, BUT YOU''LL ALSO GET A THIRD OF THE QUALITY. WE ARE GAS PROFESSIONALS. WE CAN''T COMPETE WITH AMATE"

THIS WORK HAD TO BE PERFORMED BEFORE THE GAS COULD BE TURNED ON. THE OWNER WAS VERY RESPONSIVE TO OUR REQUEST. WE WERE ON VERY STRICT TIME RESTRICTIONS. ONE OF THE TENANTS SMELLED GAS LATE IN THE EVENING AFTER THE REPAIRS HAD BEEN DONE AND HE CAME OUT AT ABOUT 11:00 IN THE EVENING TO TAKE A LOOK. I COULDN'T RECOMMEND THEM HIGHLY ENOUGH.
