"American Leak Detection apologizes if there was any misunderstanding in the price that was quoted. We quote a flat rate for leak detection work on most residential jobs and this job was quoted for $325 to find a leak on a rental property and the owner was not on site. The technician performed the leak detection as requested and bid a repair to stop the leak and include it in the original detection charge of $325, normally this would be at an additional cost. Upon completion the customer called us and questioned the price. After explaining what was done we agreed to take $200 for both the detection and repair. This amount did not cover our time and materials for the detection and repair but we conceded to make her happy. American Leak Detection strives to maintain good communication and fair pricing with all customers. But without the customer on site sometimes this is made more difficult. We hope [Member Name Removed] will understand this and consider the resolution fair."
"Thank you for taking the time to post your comments we strive to satisfy all of our customers no matter where the detection takes us. We will pass your remarks along to Chuck."
The sanitary drain's leak was also located outside the building, excavated, and repaired. Much closer to the surface, and only took about an hour.
Steve and all of his team struck me as very professional and trustworthy. Left them alone at my house doing their work for a large portion of their time here.
"Thank you for your kind words. We strive to exceed customer's expectations in what is undoubtedly a difficult situation for them. We are glad we were able to solve your problem quickly and to your satisfaction. I will pass your remarks along to the rest of Team Columbus. SW"
The person I spoke to on the phone was pleasant and sincere. It was a Tuesday (I noticed the leak on Monday evening) and while she said the next available appointment was the following Monday, she said that someone might be able to come sooner if they got done with another job early. She did not say that I absolutely had to keep the pool clear or else they wouldn't be able to do the work, but I gave an authorization with my credit card to go in whenever they were able and to fix whatever they could.
The technician apparently was able to get to my house on Wednesday afternoon. I say apparently because I was not called when they were on their way (as had been promised) so that I could meet them there. And what I heard back from the receptionist after the technician apparently went there was that he "couldn't see a thing" because the water was too murky, but that I was going to need a vinyl liner replacement. This was Wednesday late afternoon, and I was promised a quote by Thursday morning.
Thursday afternoon, I got a call asking for my email address to send the quote, and I was also told that they were going to bill me $135 for the service call, but that if I ordered the liner replacement from them I'd get $135 of credit. I was annoyed at being charged $135 for the guy to come by when he had spare time just to take one look and charge me $135 for that. But I was expecting to just have them do the replacement and then get my money back that way.
I waited and waited, but never received a quote from American Leak Detection. After the initial "I'll get you a quote by tomorrow morning" I called two other pool companies and they each came over to check it out for FREE and then gave me the estimates by Friday evening. Finally, on Tuesday I decided to just go with one of those other companies.
In a nutshell, I've you've got money to burn then you might want to consider American Leak Detection. But they apparently value their own time infinitely more than they value their customer's time, so I wouldn't recommend them. They really should not have charged me for the service call, because they would have had to make the same visit for free to give me an estimate on the liner replacement, they didn't tell me that I needed the pool to be clear (or I would have told them not to come then), and the guy didn't do a darn thing!
"This member called to state his pool was losing water rapidly and he wanted to locate the leak. We knew the liner was 10 years old and the pool was not full at the time. This discussion was to see if we could locate the large leak and then have the pool filled so we would be able to finish the detection. The member states he did not want to pay $135 for a service call when the technician “didn't do a thing.” Our technician dove the pool to locate the leak, but it was too dirty and visibility was low. We couldn’t figure out how a pool could turn so green in 24 hours. It’s impossible for an algae bloom to occur from Monday to Wednesday. This member never asked us for a free quote to replace the liner, we were hired to locate the leak. Had the pool water been clear, this would have been possible. We initially quoted him our regular pool detection fee of $370, but we ultimately reduced this to $135."
Even though this turned out to be a difficult project I am very pleased with the overall performance of the company and especially Paul's performance. We did have a fixed price agreement for completing the work and the company would have honored it had we not insisted on finishing the job on overtime. There were two technicians working during the overtime period of about three hours and I think the $350 surcharge is reasonable for that.
It's an ingroud stainless steal pool, and no one else knew what to do with it. He did his own research, and he did a great job. I'm so pleased with his work.
