We originally did a report on this company when the work was performed. We rated this company all A's. About 6 months after the install, we noticed that a tile was cracked but we did not do anything about it. A year after the install, we called Tip Top Tile back to the house because we notice there were about 10 tiles cracked. He came to the house and very quickly indicated that it was not an installation problem that it was a problem with our tiles. He indicated that they were poor quality. He also stated that there was nothing more he could do. Bob never informed us when he was installing the tiles that they were of poor quality. Actually, he said they were average quality. If he would have indicated that they were poor quality, I would have purchased new tiles. Bob also never made us sign anything indicating that the tiles were poor quality and that he was not responsible if there was a problem down the road. Here we are three and a half years later and approximately 30 - 40 percent of our tiles are cracked. There are jagged edges and we have cut ourselves while cleaning the floor. It is very dangerous and the floor has to be replaced. We contacted other installers and each installer indicated Bob did a poor job because he did not put thin set down before he put the cement board down. Bob cut corners and we are now paying for it. The floor is still shifting due to the heating and cooling and the tiles are cracking. Average price to have my floor ripped up and a new floor installed is approximately 8,000 to 10,000. We contacted an attorney and discussed the case with him. The attorney agreed that corners were cut and that it was the fault of the installer. The only problem is that we only had two years to seek legal action and we were to late. If you use Tip Top Tile, please beware. We will not use him again.

The person is basically a good worker, but he went on his own and he is not ready for that. He made mistakes that he should not have made. It made him do more work and caused me aggravation. He left damaged tiles on the floor and thought I wouldn't see it, which is silly. He put the wrong toilet then. He did things that were thoughtless, in other words not organized very well. He worked hard and did a nice job of putting in the tiles, but he was not ready to oversee his work. I did make him change the toilet because it was the wrong toilet. I had spent a lot of money on it and it needed to be the right way. He finally saw that and was very upset when I put the stop payment on the check. That was mostly because he did not do the job carefully. The price was competitive.

Bob came right out and gave me an estimate about 3 days after I first called. He told me what he would be doing, and what it would cost, and when he could start. I got another two estimates, but his was lowest and worked for us as no doors had to be adjusted because of the new tile. He then bought the tile for us and removed the old flooring, hauling it away, and then over a period of 4-5 days installed the new tile. The whole experience was painless. After he finished and was paid, I asked him to come back and re-do one tile, and he did promptly and skillfully. A very pleasant experience with a "non-drama" kind of guy!

He was on time and proceeded with the work just has he had promised. Removed the vanity, toilet, and the old tile, leveled the floor and laid the the tile. He returned the next day to grout and replace the fixtures.

They responded quickly, gave a verbal followed by a written estimate with a deposit required. Scheduled a date and time within a week of initial meeting. Bob projected it would take 3-4 days at approx 4-5 hours a day and it did. He cleaned up behind his work and performed a couple of extra things at a minimal cost.

His quote was reasonable, and we hired him because of his Angie's List reports and extensive experience. When I made the initial call to hire him on a Saturday & he wanted to start the following Mon., I wasn't ready since I hadn't picked out my tile yet. We arranged to have him start on Tues., finishing on Friday. Mon. evening I called him while at the store for help in determining how much tile I needed. Apparently, the equation to figure out the amount of tile to purchase was not that complex after all; he told me to buy 30 sq. ft of 6x6's and 55 sq. ft of 4x4's for a 70 sq. ft shower. I ended up returning over half of my 4x4 tiles. When making arrangements for his schedule, we didn't want to leave him at the house alone and he had another job in the area. So we agreed he would try to do both jobs in the area, starting the other job in the morning and coming to our house around 3 pm and working for about 6 hours each night. That worked well with our work schedule, and we were happy to accommodate him to work 2 jobs in the same area. His first night on the job, he unloaded my truck of the tiles and said he had to leave to pick up his daughter at school. He left our house by 4 pm. He had some flexibility with his other job for Wed. morning and we agreed to meet him at the house at 8:30 am(he chose the time). At 8:45 am, he had not arrived and my husband called him to find out where he was. Bob got angry and asked "what does it matter what time I get there, you're going to be there all day." I called Bob a few minutes later to ask him about his estimated arrival. He got angry with me, said he was stuck in traffic and he works on his own schedule and doesn't punch a time clock. If this is how it was going to be, he didn't want the job. I explained that I was merely calling him to talk about his work schedule, since he didn't start as we discussed the day before, and he was already late. I had no intentions of letting him leave the house at 3 pm to go to the his other job. He agreed to stay the whole day and he got much accomplished. The rest of the job seemed to go OK. He was behind schedule, so had to come to the house on Sun. to finish. While the tile work was beautiful, the niche wasn't centered on the wall. When I expressed my dissatisfaction, he threatened to quit the job again. He did stay to finish the job, although I think he hurried; the niche tiles are not level. We had to call him back because the shower spout wasn't working properly and some grout was cracking, he came out right away to troubleshoot. He was a bit messy. I asked him at the time of the quote and on his first day to put plastic down on the stairs, but he did not. He did, however, take off his shoes. I was not happy with his quick temper and lack of professionalism.

We called for an estimate and while the price was a bit high we thought he might be a good choice. We were wrong. He showed up on time, but after that its difficult to find a positive with how this job went. The tile installation was barely per our directions. The adjoining carpet was ruined in one of the rooms. We had to point this out before any attempt was made to offer a fix. The work area was left in poor condition. He caused a water disaster that extended thru 3 floors and took no responsibility for it. We are still dealing with water damage. We are disappointed with our decision to pay a premium for such a poor job.
Response from Tip Top Tile Co LLC
"IN THIS SITUATION, THE HUSBAND AND WIFE DID NOT AGREE WITH THE FINAL RESULT. WHEN COMPLETING THE JOB SHE WAS HAPPY AND I WAS PAID IN FULL. I DID NOT KNOW HE WAS UNHAPPY UNTIL I REVIEWED THE NEGATIVE REPORT ON ANGIE'S LIST. IF A CUSTOMER IS THAT UNHAPPY AS STATED IN THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS, WHY WOULD YOU PAY THE CONTRACTOR IN FULL? I WAS TOLD EVERYTHING WAS GREAT AND LEFT AFTER GETTING PAID. I WAS LEAD TO BELIEVE THEY WERE COMPLETELY SATISFIED WITH THE JOB AND IF A CUSTOMER DOES NOT EXPRESS THEIR DISSATISFACTION WHILE I AM PRESENT DOING THE JOB, HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO KNOW?"

Bob came out promptly, provided an estimate, and started the work in about a week. He worked around 4 or 5 hours each day, and the project took 6 working days. He was able to save enough old peach tiles to make an attractive border around the middle of the shower. The tile work is excellent and looks very nice. He cleaned up very well. There were some disturbing aspects, however. He ruined two hand towels in the bathroom by leaning the shower door on them. After he had re-installed the shower door, I noticed it was not on straight and raised concern about it. He attempted to straighten it, but it was not better. He said he would come back if it did not work out, but I did not ask him to come back for the door because I was upset that he had made new holes in the old peach tiles and didn't want him to do any further damage to these tiles which cannot be replaced. He had already broken one of these, and the extra holes cannot be covered up in any way. After he left, the sink next to the shower was clogged up. When I called him about the sink, he said that he wasn't anywhere near the sink and wasn't responsible for it being clogged up. He had only washed his hands in it. I think he should have taken responsibility for the clogged drain and asked his plumbing colleague to unclog it. Instead, I hired a plumber to fix it, which cost me an extra $160.91. When asked why the sink was clogged, the plumber told me it was quite puzzling, as there were pieces of ground cement in it. I then called the shower door company and ended up having to get a new shower door for $368, as they would have charged me $299 to come out and reinstall the old one. While I am now pleased with the finished product, it took two additional companies and an extra $528.91 to complete it.

The problem is that the latex peels off very easily. It's been a few months and it's already coming off. I can't use him again because he won't use the silicone caulking.

Very dissatisfied with the workmanship. He first did our kitchen, which turned out fine so we decided to use him for the bathroom floor and tub surround as well. One of the bathroom tiles is not stuck to the floor, and we called several times, and he promised to call back and set up a time to come out to fix it, but never did. He also did not use spacers on all tiles on the wall so many are unevenly spaced. For those tiles on which he did use spacers, he did not remove them, but grouted over them so you can actually see some portions of the spacers sticking through the grout. I have only ever tiled once in my life, hated every minute of it, but I did a much better job than Bob. Our grout is cracking in all of the corners of the walls in our bathtub, and around our ceramic shelves. And he used adhesive on our Durorock, which clearly stated 'mortar side.' I will never recommend him to anyone. My contractor saw his work and tore up his business cards!

Bob was always professional, courteous, and was quick at returning calls. He completed the work in the timeframe that he had promised and for the quoted amount. I was very impressed with his attention to the "little things." He took off his shoes when walking through my home and kept the mess/dust to a minimum. It was very evident that he treated my home like he would treat his own.

It was a great experience. Bob was timely with the estimate, which was very reasonable. He started the job on a timely manner and finished within three consecutive days, even though we added on installation of plumbing and shower door. The finished product is beautiful.
