Due a worsening seepage issue in my basement during heavy rains, in August of 2014 I called Mural & Sons. Although I'd used them about a decade or so ago and had a great experience and excellent long-term results, I researched them on Angie's List just to confirm they were still performing well. I was reassured by all the positive reviews.
I'd originally dealt with Robert years ago but this time Greg came out to assess the situation. He was very friendly, took the time to explain everything and answer my questions, and initially offered two options for repairing the problem. One was going to be a much more complicated and labor-intensive (and thus costlier) effort, with the end result being essentially the same--to eliminate the uncontrolled seepage. In the end he recommended the less costly option since my basement isn't finished and the cost for the other option was going to be nearly double. He said the simpler option was a common, cost-effective solution. He said their quote, which I received a week or so later in the mail, was good for 12 months.
I waited until April of 2015 to initiate the work. It took quite a bit of back and forth to schedule the date--I obviously contacted them when they were already full swing into the season's work, plus this type of work can always mean unplanned delays; at the same time, I also had some limitations on scheduling because I wanted someone here in case there were questions. I worked with Christine through the months, who was very friendly and quick to respond and update me. Everything finally came together in early June and they started work.
A three-man crew came out. They were friendly and worked hard. (They even made a point to stay aware of the neighborhood cat we'd been taking care of, who was visiting them during their work each day, lol.) Overall the work was done as promised and seems to be of the same high quality I experienced years ago. There was one hiccup but it was quickly remedied. The rains hit within a few days of their finishing the work and the sump pump has been doing its job wonderfully. I will update the status of the work later in the year.

Mural and Sons was a pleasure to work with. We had a large crack in our foundation that spanned the whole back wall of our basement and to 1/2 of a side wall. We opted to have the wall trenched and waterproofed from the outside with beams placed inside to keep the wall structurally sound. They were timely and prompt. Arrived on time for initial evaluation, estimate arrived as promised and they started and finished work on schedule. Office staff was very responsive. Crew was professional, friendly and courteous. Given the amount of work that needed to be done they were as cleanly as could be expected. Would use them again and would recommend highly.

The work was meticulous. They cleaned up everything they left the house. The foreman explained everything they were doing and why and communicated what times they would be returning. They did an excellent job. I would use them again and have referred friends to them already. A very positive experience.

They did a great job. Used their quote to negotiate a lower price on the house we were buying. Wish they had done a better job explaining that I would want to get a quote from a landscaper as well. Overall, very pleased with the job they did.

I got two quotes. What I really needed, Mural and Son could provide. They did an excellent job, I am very happy with them. They were wonderful. They did exactly what they said, worked consistently, and cleaned up after themselves. They got done on time and they were very informative; they kept the home owner updated on what was going on. Their pricing was competitive and were actually the lower quote but it was actually the work that I needed to have done. I would recommend them to anybody.

They did a fine job! They put a big beam in and dug along the sides of my house. They were great to work with and were not problems at all. When they dug up my flower garden, he pulled out the extra bulbs I thought I had grabbed and it was just so nice of him to that extra work for me. He was very knowledgeable as well.

Work was completed in November 2001. In the subsequent years, cracks began to develop in the walls where reinforcement was completed. We began contacting Mr. Mural in October 2006 (before the warranty expired). It took Mr. Mural until October 2007 to respond to our request to re-inspect his work. At that time, Mr. Mural indicated the reinforcing beams were and quot;doing what they were designed to doand quot; and only if we experienced water leakage, should we contact him to re-inspect. When other contractors have come to look at the foundation, all have questioned why Mural and Sons used nails to secure the blocks holding the beams in place rather than bolts. All have stated Mural and Sons should remedy the situation. That is exactly where the current problem is. The house is unsellable without additional repair but Mural and Sons has not responded to multiple requests to remedy the situation. This is despite the fact their own staff admitted their work was substandard.

Mr. Mural inspected the entire house (4 floors) and determined that although some settling had occurred over the past 115 years, it was minor, not dangerous, and not likely to cause us any problems in the foreseeable future. He gave us some advice on how to distribute loads so as not to aggravate the condition. He was polite, professional, courteous, and did not charge us anything for the inspection.

Outstanding customer service! I was really in a bind last night. I am in
the process of closing on my house and the lender needed a
letter/inspection from a structural engineer. My friend referred me to
Mural and Son. On really short notice they were able to come to the
house this morning and do the inspection and get the report to the
lender. Christine and Bob were very efficient and professional. They
really saved me. I would definitely not hesitate to refer them to others
and use them again in the future for other services (waterproofing,
basement repair etc).

While in the process of purchasing my home, the bank was concerned about one of the walls in the basement and questioned the soundness of the foundation; I was required to get a certification from a structural engineer. I contacted Mural and Sons and they were very helpful in scheduling on an extremely short notice (I had mere days to submit a report to the bank to get my mortgage approved). Their price was also in line with several other people that I called, and lower than two others.
I scheduled an appointment with Bob Mural for a few days later. He arrived a few minutes early, performed the inspection and discussed everything that he was looking at/for in the process. Bob was very efficient and receptive to my questions and concerns. I felt very comfortable with his recommendation that there was nothing structurally wrong with the wall, and that it was supporting the house, but that I may want to monitor it in future years to see if an external issue (improper draining and grading of the backyard) poses any problems down the line. He also suggested some ways to improve the condition of the yard itself so that it wouldn't poorly affect the foundation.
He told me I would have his report via email by the end of business the following day, and that he would also be sending a hard copy by mail. When I checked my email the next morning, the report was already in my inbox (before 9am!) and was very detailed, offering a solution to what may eventually become a problem in future years. If anything were to happen to the wall, I would definitely contact Mural and Sons to repair it.

It went well, they were courteous, took great care not to disturb the garden, came on time. Delivered what they promised. The waterproofing is holding up, there is no water wicking up into my house and I am ready to repair my inside wall. I would hire them again.

We thought that they did a great job. The house is probably 80 years old and the codes were not what they are now, so there was some deeper settling in average. They came out and had that done too and they did a great job. They came when they said they would and were here for a couple days and cleaned up after themselves. The work was good and they did what they were supposed to do. We spent $3500 on that service. We would tell others that they were good, pleasant, and courteous people to work with. We thought that the pricing was fair.

The previous people who I had in here laid a thin floor and that was breaking up just by walking on the carpet. Muraland Son helped me out. They closed the family room broke the floor put pillars down, new concrete and while the others had not put the rebar they put the rebar by the walls and all. They did a good job. It was dirtier than what you would expect with all the dust. While the other contractor before him just wanted to take your money and run and did not care what was happening at least Mural told me what was happening. If there was nobody better out there I would use them in the future.

Excellent! Walls now appear to be stable and true. Employees were professional. Bob Mural was very helpful later was we were planning to finish the basement, giving us advice on how to appropriately have the walls studded and insulated. Hopefully we will never need to use Mural and Sons again but definitely will if ever we encounter another structural issue with our home. Thank you, Bob!

They were fantastic people. I really respected him, because I had an estimate done in 2007. I asked him how soon I had to have it done, and he told me that I could wait another year. He had given me a $15,000 estimate. I had others estimate the work at comparable prices. He was not pushy at all, which the others were. He was on the job for three weeks; he worked from the outside and the inside. What really swayed me to that company, was that the man who did the estimate was the owner and he was very honest with me.

I received an estimate of $5,486.00 plus an additional $200 for some extra work needed. The estimate consisted of 3 installments. $2500 when excavated, $2500 when wall is built and $686 when backfilled. I stopped in every so often to see how they were progressing and to take pictures. From what I could tell they were doing a good job. Mural completed the work and when I came back I noticed minor damage to a fence post. They did minor damage to the bottom aluminum siding of the house. Mural was supposed to place the pad for the compressor in its original position and place stones from the base of the wall to grade to prevent the compressor from sinking. They installed the stones in the wrong place and the area was to small to fit the pad. They never finished the mortar on the bricks inside the crawl space. According to Mural and Son the work was completed in November of '08. I provided them with a list of the work that wasn't completed. I called the salesman to let them know about the shoddy work. Initially, he said they would come out to fix the fence post, but any additional repairs were to be repaired at cost. Greg (the salesman) said that the wall was completed properly, so that was what they were only concerned with. They were not concerned with the completion of the minor work. I called close to December and spoke with the owner. He said that he didn't know anything about the problems. He said he would speak with Greg and then follow up with me. The owner never returned my calls after several attempts. I called a building inspector and he called Mural and Son. They told the building inspector that they would fix the problems in the spring. They also sent me a letter mentioning only 2 of the 4 problems that had occurred. In the late spring, I tried calling them and again, the owner never returned my calls. At one point, around June 16th, they unexpectedly without a phone call, came out to repair the 4 problems I had. They did an excellent job fixing the post. In regards to the compressor pad, they should have dug all the dirt out and replaced it with stone. Instead, they dug about 2 inches deep and just added more stone on top of it to make me "think" they had fixed the problem. I went in and checked the other 2 problems and they didn't repair them. I called the company several more times and never got a reply. Finally, the receptionist went and talked to someone. She told me that as far as they were concerned they had fixed everything that they were supposed to. I still owed them $680.00 on the job, but the job was not completed. They have yet to bill me for the remainder amount, even though THEY said they were done. My contract said that I will get a 5 year warranty on the wall if I have paid in full. I have come to believe they have done this on purpose for people that don't make complete payment so they don't have to warrant their work. This is probably why they never bothered billing me. I then hired an inspector for $175.00 to come out and inspect their work. The inspector concluded that the mortar in the crawl space was never finished, the compressor pad was not installed correctly, the siding is damaged and they crimped both my compressor lines at the house. I believe they did this after coming back. I have given Mural and Son more than enough time to correct their mistakes.
Response from Mural & Son Inc
"The repairs consisted of rebuilding a small section of crawl space foundation wall. The new concrete block foundation was constructed structurally correct. The mortar joints are not incomplete as owner claims, but extend beyond the interior face of the block due to the limited/no access to the crawl space. The air conditioning unit was the responsibility of the owner as stated twice in the contract. We did not disconnect, reset or reconnect the unit or crimped the compressor lines. There was no reason for us to touch the air conditioning unit. There was limestone under the fiberglass pad. We returned upon owner's request to verify this item. The fiberglass pad was set in the original area. Owner complained it was 2" off center. Final position of the air conditioning pad was to be performed by the A/C contractor, upon reconnection. The siding in questions that was damaged was pre-existing to our repairs. Due to this condition, we specifically excluded repairs to the siding in the provisions of the repairs item. We did not authorize the owner of agree to hire a private home inspection nor did we receive any written report of the inspection. Any costs incurred are his responsibility. The warranty for the work is clear and concise regarding the obligations of the contractor and the owner. These terms were accepted by the owner by signing the contract."

I was not on hand while the work was being done until the last day. If I had anything that disturbed me ,it would be that the workers were too inconsiderate of the flowerbeds nearby. I called on a landscaper to repair.

Bob Mural gave us a very thorough quote, and we selected him based on the fact that he could jack the wall back up. His workers showed up every day on time and always had things cleaned up. Since this entailed digging 5 feet under the floor of the laundry room, we expected to have quite a mess and were very pleased when that was not the case. There were a couple of surprises during the project, both of which added to the originally quoted price. The entire laundry room wall was constructed without a footer, and there was a large gap underneath the portion of the garage floor nearest the basement. Bob explained our options for addressing these problems very clearly. We chose to have him perform the extra work to prevent future problems and expense. The additional charges were very reasonable and we are sure they are far less than if we needed someone to come back in the future. Bob jacked the wall back into position and the concrete he replaced looks fantastic. We were apprehensive about having this work done as we have never had a problem like this with any other house, and we are extremely happy with the results.
