Mike Boodon (sp?) of CTI was referred to me by mutual friend and real estate broker. I took possession of the space and immediately hired an architect to detail everything which was to be done including a cost estimate so I would have a guideline. CTI eagerly accepted my offer to bid on the job. I explained in great detail the time sensitive nature of this project and that he will need to be in communication with me in order to accurately bid the job because the drawings we submitted were primarily permit drawings and don't show a lot of detail. Anyone who is ever built anything that required a set of stamped drawings will understand what I'm talking about. I talked to Mike on Friday and he offered to come by first thing Monday morning and pick up the drawings. Monday came and went? No Mike. Tuesday came and he offered to come by with his apologies and I agreed feeling like things can and do come up so I can't hold them to any different standard than I would anyone else. I also made it very clear to him that these were the last set of drawings that I had. That in fact I was giving him my personal set of drawings, that I needed them to be kept in pristine condition, and return to me whether or not they got the business. He agreed and picked up the drawings. This was the last time I actually spoke to Mike until I insisted that he return the drawings. Several calls went unanswered and each time he promised that I would have an estimate for the work he failed to deliver. Finally he told me that a family member had fallen ill ( this is the kind of nonsense all contractors tell you when they don't want to do a job) and that he is real sorry but I would be better off having someone else do the work. Bottom line: CTI wasted three weeks of my time, refused to return my drawings, and is extremely unprofessional. Under no circumstance should anyone work with a company that gives you a hard time about giving you an estimate. These people were provided stamped architectural drawings to work with just like all the other builders. They were the only ones that couldn't even come up with an estimate. This was a very disappointing experience considering that they came as a personal referral from a friend. He can use them from now on. The most insulting aspect of the entire experience was that I told Mike that the drawings I was giving him would need to be returned quickly. After completely failing to to even give us an estimate, I asked him to return the drawings his words were "when I get time". This obnoxious arrogant behavior is the trademark of a bad contractor. When he wanted the business he could not have been nicer however when it was time to part ways he gets as petty as holding my drawings over my head. I asked a mutual friend to stop by and pick them up to avoid any confrontation and he agreed. Don't work with this builder.
Description of Work: The contracted job was to retrofit a commercial space located in the Galleria, downtown Cleveland. I was taking a former department store and renovating it into a nightclub. The job consisted of building a rather large commercial bar, light demolition, light electrical, minor mechanical fabrication, and installing a commercial door opening onto St. Clair Avenue from the space.
