My wife and I noticed a huge difference immediately that night...no need for the down comforter. Noticed that the furnace does not kick in as frequently as it used to. Even though we experienced temperatures in the single digits and lower this winter, the gas bill never went up.
Thank you Aviles !
I hired them because of your rating. First of all, there was a HUGE communication gap starting with the first phone call. When they came, they spoke very little English and whenever I would ask a question they would brush it off or ignore it. If it looked like a problem arose and I would ask what the issue was, they just talked to each other in Spanish. Twice they went outside and smoked in the driveway, and when I would ask about the problem, they just said in broken English that the boss was coming (first time) and the electricians were coming (2nd time) - no explanation of what was going on.
There was nothing in writing except what the Columbia Gas energy auditor left me with the estimates, and I later discovered the first guy who came to check out my house and the work to be done took everything with him. When the workers came, they asked me how much they were supposed to charge for things according to the paperwork, which I no longer had.
AFTER they installed the insulation I was told since it was now so air tight that they had to install vents in the attic or I would have mold growing in there, which left me no choice. I just found out on the statement that it cost me an additional $400.
Then there was the bathroom fan which they installed. The energy auditor had advised me to get a fan with a timer, but I decided I wouldn't complicate things and just go with a regular fan. They ended up tearing up my bathroom wall and slapping some spackle on it. Then AFTER they installed the fan, as they were leaving I discovered the fan could not be turned off separately from the light. When I asked them about it they said, no it can't be turned off unless you turn the light off. Now whenever I turn on the bathroom light I have to listen to the noisy fan, even if I'm just cleaning or combing my hair.
I've called twice to see if they would change the fan so it could be turned off, but they have NOT returned my calls.
**UPDATE**First of all, playing the "racist" card is a cheap shot. I hired them knowing they were a minority firm and also recommended them to my neighbor based on your list BEFORE my experience with them. Next, to excuse knocking two holes in my bathroom wall he says in his response, "the customer provided the fan that was smaller than the old one." There never was a fan in my bathroom, nor did I supply the fan he installed. He says, "customer could have signed a waiver" regarding the four attic vents, but I wasn't told I needed them until they had already sprayed the insulation and said mold would form if I didn't. When they sent someone to check the job site for any issues ahead of time, I was told there were no issues. I am retired and on a fixed income and when the statement finally came they had added on $400 for the four vents ($100/each), raising my bill to $765. My next door neighbor, who are a young working couple only got charged $200 for the same four vents ($50/each) by Aviles just a couple weeks ago. I guess this what they can do when they come with absolutely no written contract or even an itemized list for you to approve and sign before they begin work. Finally, I did call their secretary twice, and no one got back to me until I finally called Columbia Gas.
"This job was completed thru Columbia Gas rebate program. The home owner pays $250 dollars and all other insulation work is rebated thru the program. To qualify for the rebate a bath fan has to be installed, and thru the energy codes the fan has to be connected to a timer or the light switch to assure it comes on when people shower. The only way a timer can be installed is by running a new circuit that would be significantly more expensive. The customer provided the fan that was smaller than the old one, we do not do finish work just install the fan so we can do the insulation. Again if we did the finish work it would also be more expensive. The house did turn out tight which is our goal, but it did not have adequate ventilation which after insulation can cause moisture issues. The customer could have signed a waiver refusing the addition of the vents which we would never put in without there approval. I will not address any racist comments as we are equal opportunity employers. However I can say that there are 2 full time secretaries at the office, a website with email, and my cell phone if they needed to contact anyone. I do not know of any problems that occurred. The workers are allowed to take to breaks by law and have ashtrays on the back of the truck where they put them out. We also need to take all the paperwork so we can submit the rebate to Columbia Gas. This is our first negative review in 26 years and I wish the customer would have contacted me. We were just awarded the Top Quality Award for Insulation thru Columbia gas and have had several outstanding reviews. I apologize for any misunderstandings. We will be doing several other jobs on this street and I will stop by myself."
As for the work, they air-sealed the house with spray foam, from the basement to tthe attic along with some plastic in some larger spots. Nothing that looks bad, and so far has worked well. They also did in-wall blown-in cellulose insulation from the outside on the first floor. They took some aluminum siding off, drilled holes and shot it in from there. I saw no signs that they ever did, not a single dent in the siding... On the 2nd floor, they drilled 1 1/2" holes in the drywall covering the rafters and walls and blew it in from there. We gutted the upstairs and the drywall was unfinished, so that was fine, the holes covered up just fine when we finished mudding it. They then blew about 12" of insualtion in the crawl spaces and in the attic areas, then cut 4 vents in the side of the house to properly vent those areas.
In the end the final price came out to about (IIRC) $3200. But after Columbias instant rebate to Avilas and the rebate to us, the final price came down to about $1100 ! Cant beat that for whole house insulation and air sealing !
We have already recommended Avilas to others who may need this kind of work, they did a great job!
We especially appreciated our contacts with Alex Aviles who came to our home and gave us a complete rundown of the job. He is a real pro and a real gentleman. I felt completely confident in all of the information he provided and the work was done just as he outlined. He and the company has our highest recommendation
