Lawn Tool Repair
My Sears lawnmower needed service and would be gone for 2-3 weeks so on Monday 5/19/14,
I bought a used mower from AA Mower at 5002 Memphis Ave Cleveland 44144, to tide me over
while I waited. I have used them for lawnmower maintenance in the past. Always thought
they were high on prices but they are the closest so I use them.
The only one they had was a older looking Sears Craftsman for $183.00. I expressed my
concern that I thought that was high for a older mower and that for a little
bit more, I could buy a cheap new mower.
"Joe" assured me: "not one like this, it?s a Craftsman self-propelled, mulching mower,
you get the bag and the mulching plug with it. It has been completely rebuilt and
you have thirty days to bring it back if you don't like it". We went
around a couple more time with Joe assuring me that I could bring it back it if
I was not satisfied with it - he wouldn't budge on the price - it was the last
one and they were going fast. I bought it.
I took it home, got it out of the car and I figure I'm going to fire this baby up and cut
the lawn. There is a piece of tape on the side that says "10X" above
a red bulb used to prime the engine. I pumped 10 times, pulled 10 times -
nothing. Pumped 10 more times, pulled 10 more times - nothing. Pumped 10 more times, pulled about 6 more
times - a puff of smoke - and it sprang to life. It seemed like it was struggling to
keep running so I let it set for a couple of minutes to warm up.
There is a lever on the handle that engages the self-propelling front wheels. I pushed
down on the mowers handle to bring the front wheels off the ground and pulled
the lever to engage the wheels - they started to turn. I lower the wheels to
the ground - the wheels stopped turning - I raised the wheels again - they
started turning - I lowered the wheels to the ground - they stopped turning. Despite
what Joe said, apparently I have not bought a self-propelled mower - I have
bought a push mower. I thought - I have 30 days to take it back!
My lawn still needed mowed so I started to push the mower across my grass. After a couple of
swipes I noticed large clumps of grass coming from under the mower so I raised
the wheels a notch - the clumps kept coming - I raised the wheels another notch
- the clumps kept coming - I raise the wheel as high as they'll go - the clumps
keep coming. Despite what Joe said, apparently I have not bought a mulching
mower, I have bought a clumping mower. I thought - I have 30 days to take it
back!
That was all on Monday 5/19/14. On Wednesday 5/21/15 - two days later I figure I'm going to
lower the wheels and cut the lawn again because we are leaving for vacation and
will be gone for a week. If not cut lower the grass will get out of control. I
go thru the same routine - pump/pull - pump/pull - pump/pull - a puff of smoke
- she fires right up. I thought - I have 30 days to take it back!
So now I am pushing my self-propelled mower and leaving clumps of grass all over my lawn
with the mulching mower again. Suddenly I think - I smell oil! I look down -
the engine is smoking and is spitting oil out onto the mowing deck and - it
quits/stops/dies/the end/kaput/no sign of life. I only have a couple more
swipes to make so I figure pump/pull, pump/pull and maybe I can finish. So I pump
and then I pull one time - the engine tilts up and I have a limp rope in my
hand. I thought - I have 30 days to take it back!
Return from vacation, the next day on 5/29/14 - I load the "mower from h***" into
the car to return it - because Joe said: "you have thirty days to bring
it back if you don't like it" - it's only been 10 days.
It's not funny from this point on!
As I'm taking the mower out of my car Joe comes over and asks what he can do for us(my wife Sue
is with me). Me - Joe I would like my money back this mower worthless. Joe
inquires - what's wrong with it? I explain in detail - everything! Joe responds
well our policy is not to refund cash, but in this situation with everything
that has gone wrong with this mower I think we can make an exception. I smile
and agree.
Joe says first I have to go talk to Grandpa. I ask - Grandpa? Joe explains - Grandpa is
inside the building and Grandpa sets the policy, but I'll explain, I'm sure
he'll say it's ok. Joe asks for and takes my receipt and goes to talk to
Grandpa.
At this point I should explain that the only thing on my receipt is the transaction info -
date/address/name/price/model #/serial #.
Joe returns - apologizes and says Grandpa says no - we will not return your money we will fix
the mower. I laugh and say you can't fix it - it's completely worn out. Me -
tell Grandpa to come out here. Joe - he's in a wheel chair, he can't get
around. Me - I'll go in and talk to him. Joe - you can't, he's in a back office
you're not allowed in there.
Me - you said I have 30 days to return it! Joe says - I meant - ya 30 days and we will fix
it.
Then it gets ugly!
Joe shows me my receipt with freshly stamped red letters on it that say "FINAL SALE NO
REFUNDS"
Me - that was not on there - you just stamped that on there.
Joe - It's on all of our receipts.
Me - that was not on there, if you going to make stuff up now - how about my 30 day warranty
- where's that at.
Amazingly - Joe smiles - takes my receipt back into the office and writes on it "30
Day Warranty: Will repair any defects of mower that are not caused by the
customer."
Joe attempts to hand me back my receipt. Me - I can't accept that, that's not what you said
and that was not on there when we make the transaction - what kind of business
is this? Joe - fine I'll go put the date and my initials on it - he does -
hands me back my receipt - we go around for a while having an unfriendly
conversation - frustrated I begin to leave.
Joe points at the lawnmower and says to me - are you going
to take that with you.
Me - what am I going to do with it, it doesn't work.
Joe - what do you want me to do with it.
Me - The way you are running this business you'll probably
sell it to someone else. I know this, you have my $183.00 and the lawnmower, I
don't know if that?s a problem for me or for you, I guess we'll find out
