The big issue is the complete lack of communication. We will get a call from Linda asking us to call her. When we call, she apologizes and says she doesn't have an estimate but will call back later that day. She doesn't. When we leave message the following day, she doesn't call back. We then call the manager (who is helpful and calls back). He leaves her a message. She then calls back, but has no information, and appears to have forgotten every detail of what we had requested an estimate for, but promises to call back when she has details. She doesn't. We leave a message. Nothing. We call the manager, who leaves her another message. Still nothing. We wanted to spend several thousand dollars on a new kitchen, but will find someone else.
Our flooring experience was quite different. The Pergo laminate was special ordered and included Blackjack underlayment and molding in the order. I never received a call (as requested) when all the supplies came in. Nor did anyone tell me the molding and Blackjack underlayment was in stock in the store. When we did pick up our flooring we discoved that one box had been crushed on the end and the boards were damaged. We promptly called HD and ordered another 2 boxes. Unfortunately there was a delay in finding the additional flooring as it was discontinued by Pergo and HD was not informed. Our floor installation started minus the box we needed that was on order. Upon installation Finn Remodeling found the Pergo to be defective - minus end grooves on many boards or simply cut improperly. So, our floor installation came to a 2 + week halt until a different floor could be ordered.
HD willingly gave us an upgrade for our inconvenience. The new floor was installed with no problems.
The electrical work was not what I had expected. The price was great but as the saying goes you get what you pay for. The price quoted did not include eliminating existing junction boxes. The contractor put a plate on top of them stating they could not be moved. I had a new outlet put behind the stove so the cord would not be visible. The first time the outlet was added it was in the wrong place. When they corrected the error they put the outlet in the correct spot but left a hole in the wall where the mistaken outlet was put and hid it with the stove.
Since the electrical work was less than my expectations I called Home Depot and asked if the plumbing work would be performed by a master plumber. They assured me that it would. When it was time for the plumbing to be done the same people showed up that had completed all of the other work. When I asked if anyone was a master plumber the response I received was" we are all plumbers". The plumbing seems to be fine.
Do have your cabinets installed by Home Depot.
Don't have them perform electrical work.
Consider having them perform plumbing work.
Don't have them perform drywall work if you are a perfectionist.
THEN .... the nightmare of contracted installers slapped me! They called the day before to let me know they would be there 1st thing in the morning. After third shift, I grabbed a few hours sleep (1 1/2 to 2 hours) then got up to greet the installers. When they were 2 hours late, I called them and got an answering machine. I called Home Depot and they confirmed the number I had but they couldn't do anything because installation is by a sub-contractor, so I called the sub again and left another message. At 3 1/2 hours after the scheduled start time I got a call back from the sub. They weren't going to be able to do the installation that day because they had staffing problems. I'm sure I wasn't very pleasant to talk to at that point. They would be out tomorrow to install. It was about 45 minutes after that conversation that there was a knock on my door. Guess who? Yes the sub-contractor! The owner showed up with one worker because they wanted to " do right by me".
It was and still is the worst quality installation I have ever seen; 2 of the steps were cut too narrow, there were 7" long frayed strings on several steps, the hallway has many very visible joints, the worst of which is one where they must have turned the carpet because the nap differs and draws attention to the joint especially when freshly vacuumed, and they didn't bother to run the carpet under the radiator all the way to the wall so we have a few inches of unfinished wood floor staring up at us! To top it off, they were in a hurry and I saw them packing up and stowing back in their van an amount of "scrap" carpet that was almost equal to the amount of carpet they installed. I asked if it was someone else's carpet or if it was carpet for which I had paid. I made them haul it back into my basement and this did not make them the least bit happy. I wonder what was up with that scenario?
After these trials, I was too angry to follow up with Home Depot. Much later, I did advise them of my experience and I doubt the sub-contractor works for them anymore. I like Home Depot and their staff very much but I will NEVER use their installation services again. Everything I buy from them I can either install myself or my friends or family can or I have my own installer lined up. This experience was many years ago and I'm sure they have improved their sub-contractor screening process or they would be out of business by now!
Cabinets were hung poorly, with gaps and uneven doors.
When they installed the range, they removed an old range with ventilation and never covered the ventilation hole to the outside. Years later we had to have it covered, after unexplained drafts.
When they installed the dishwasher, they did not hook it up properly and it leaked into the basement, which involved them having to rip out some of the ceiling and replace the pipes.
In the end, we had to use a family member lawyer to talk to Home Depot Managment who came out and inspected the work himself.
I know that they use contractors, but they need to stand behind the contractors that they hire.
Years later, we still are reminded of the poor job when we see our cracked rookwood and shaky garbage disposal.
